The Alola Pokédex in Pokémon Sun and Moon lists 302 Pokémon, and you need to own 300 of them to complete it. The two you can skip are the Mythicals at the end of the list, #301 Magearna and #302 Marshadow. Owning a Pokémon is what fills its slot. Seeing it in battle or scanning its QR code only marks it as seen. With 300 owned, go to the GAME FREAK office in Heahea City and talk to the Game Director, who gives you the Shiny Charm.

To track your own progress, open the Alola Pokédex checklist. It lists all 302 entries in Rotom Pokédex order and lets you mark each one as owned.
This page covers the retail Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon on any Nintendo 3DS or 2DS system. Patches 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2 all use the same Pokédex. Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon use a longer list with different numbers, covered in its own section below.
How many Pokémon are in the Sun and Moon Pokédex?
The Rotom Pokédex runs from #001 Rowlet to #302 Marshadow. There is only one regional list. Each island has its own sub-list, but those draw their entries from the same 302 rather than adding new ones.
| Number | Value | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Listed | 302 | Every slot in the Alola Pokédex, #001 Rowlet to #302 Marshadow |
| Needed to complete | 300 | Owned entries the Game Director checks for the Shiny Charm |
| Optional | 2 | #301 Magearna and #302 Marshadow, both Mythical |
| Alolan forms | 18 | Regional forms of Kanto Pokémon, from Rattata to Marowak |
Magearna and Marshadow
Both Mythicals have numbered slots, but neither is required. Magearna came from a QR code distributed in 2016. After you become Champion, scanning that code with the in-game QR Scanner sends a delivery man to the Antiquities of the Ages shop in the Hau'oli City Shopping Mall, and he hands it over. The codes are region-locked. Marshadow came from a 2017 serial code distribution: codes were handed out at events and shops and redeemed through Mystery Gift. That event ended long ago. Neither one affects the Shiny Charm.
Why a scanned Pokémon still isn't caught
The Rotom Pokédex tracks two states for each entry. Seen means you met the Pokémon in battle or scanned its QR code, so the entry shows its picture and where it lives. Owned means a Pokémon of that species was registered as yours, from catching it, hatching it, evolving it or trading for it. The 300 count only looks at owned.

Owned is recorded per species, not per form. Midday and Midnight Lycanroc share one slot, and so do the four Oricorio styles. A Kantonian Vulpix moved over from Pokémon Bank fills the Vulpix slot just like an Alolan one. The form only changes what the entry shows.
Scanning QR codes still helps. Each scan adds 10 points toward Island Scan (20 for special codes). The QR Scanner holds 10 scans and refills one every two hours.
What 10, 50 and 300 owned give you
Three people check your Pokédex. Only one of the rewards depends on the full 300.

| Owned | Reward | Who gives it | Where | Condition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | Ultra Balls | Scientist | Hau'oli City Information Center | None |
| 50 | Lucky Egg | Professor Kukui | His lab on Route 1 | After you beat the Elite Four |
| 300 | Shiny Charm | Game Director | GAME FREAK office, Heahea City (2F) | Magearna and Marshadow are not counted |
The GAME FREAK office is on the second floor of the building beside the Dimensional Research Lab in Heahea City, on Akala Island. The Game Director also stamps your Trainer Passport each time you show him a finished island Pokédex, and saves his last stamp for the complete Alola Pokédex.
The Oval Charm is a separate reward
Morimoto works in the same office. After you become Champion he will battle you once a day, and he gives you the Oval Charm the first time you beat him. It raises the chance of finding Eggs at the Pokémon Nursery and has nothing to do with the Pokédex.
The Shiny Charm adds two extra shiny rolls to wild encounters, taking the base 1 in 4,096 to about 1 in 1,365. SOS chains and the Masuda Method stack with it.
The island lists are not the whole dex
Each island has its own list, but they overlap. Plenty of Pokémon appear on two or three of them. Finishing all four still leaves 17 Alola slots untouched, because those Pokémon belong to no island list.

| Island list | Entries | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Melemele | 120 | Starters, early routes, Verdant Cavern |
| Akala | 130 | Brooklet Hill, Wela Volcano Park, Lush Jungle |
| Ula'ula | 130 | Mount Hokulani, Haina Desert, Mount Lanakila |
| Poni | 100 | Vast Poni Canyon and the postgame areas |
| On no island list | 17 | Listed only in the full Alola Pokédex |
The 17 Pokémon on no island list
Fifteen of these still count toward 300. They're mostly story and postgame Pokémon, so expect to fill them late.

Slots one cartridge can't fill
A single Sun or Moon cartridge can reach 269 of the 300 slots by itself. The other 31 need a trade: 15 are the other version's exclusives, 6 are the two starter lines you didn't pick, and 10 only appear when a Pokémon evolves during a trade.

| Group | Slots | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| The other version's exclusives | 15 | A trade from the other version (fossils can be traded as items) |
| The two starter lines you didn't pick | 6 | A trade from another save |
| Trade evolutions | 10 | A link trade, sometimes with a held item |
| One cartridge on its own | 269 | Catch, evolve, hatch, gifts and the Tapu Village Golem trade |
Version exclusives
Each version has 15 species the other can't find. Fossils are the one workaround. The Sun fossils (Skull and Cover) and Moon fossils (Armor and Plume) are items, so you can trade the item itself and revive it at the fossil lab on Route 8.
| Pokémon Sun only | Pokémon Moon only |
|---|---|
| #075 Rufflet | #077 Vullaby |
| #076 Braviary | #078 Mandibuzz |
| #087 Cottonee | #085 Petilil |
| #088 Whimsicott | #086 Lilligant |
| #177 Passimian | #176 Oranguru |
| #188 Cranidos | #190 Shieldon |
| #189 Rampardos | #191 Bastiodon |
| #194 Tirtouga | #192 Archen |
| #195 Carracosta | #193 Archeops |
| #224 Turtonator | #244 Drampa |
| #253 Vulpix (Alolan) | #251 Sandshrew (Alolan) |
| #254 Ninetales (Alolan) | #252 Sandslash (Alolan) |
| #291 Solgaleo | #292 Lunala |
| #294 Buzzwole | #295 Pheromosa |
| #298 Kartana | #297 Celesteela |
Rockruff evolves into Midday Lycanroc in Sun and Midnight Lycanroc in Moon. Since both forms share one slot, either one completes it.
Trade evolutions and the Tapu Village Golem
These 10 Alola slots only appear when a Pokémon evolves during a trade, sometimes holding an item. Trade it to a second system, then trade it back, and the evolved Pokémon is registered on both saves.
| No. | Pokémon | How it evolves |
|---|---|---|
| #039 | Slowking | Trade Slowpoke holding King's Rock |
| #044 | Alakazam | Trade Kadabra |
| #097 | Machamp | Trade Machoke |
| #100 | Gigalith | Trade Boldore |
| #156 | Milotic | Trade Feebas holding Prism Scale |
| #168 | Magmortar | Trade Magmar holding Magmarizer |
| #218 | Porygon2 | Trade Porygon holding Up-Grade |
| #219 | Porygon-Z | Trade Porygon2 holding Dubious Disc |
| #228 | Electivire | Trade Electabuzz holding Electirizer |
| #276 | Scizor | Trade Scyther holding Metal Coat |
Gengar, Politoed and Trevenant also evolve by trade, but you don't need one. Haunter at the Abandoned Thrifty Megamart can call a Gengar in SOS battles. At night in the rain, SOS battles in Malie Garden can bring out Politoed. Trevenant can turn up as a visitor on Isle Abeens in Poké Pelago.
Feebas also has a level-up evolution that needs a high Beauty stat, but Sun and Moon have no way to raise Beauty, so the Prism Scale trade is the practical route.
Golem is the exception. The trainer in the Tapu Village Pokémon Center gives you an Alolan Graveler named Veler for your Haunter, and Veler evolves into Golem as soon as the trade finishes. That registers Golem with no second system.
Finishing the dex on a 3DS today
Online play for 3DS games ended on 8 April 2024. That took the GTS, Wonder Trade and online Festival Plaza with it. Local wireless still works, so the trade-only slots need a second 3DS or 2DS running the other version, or another copy of the same one.
| Method | Works now? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Local wireless trade (Festival Plaza, in person) | Yes | Fills slots on both saves and triggers trade evolutions |
| GTS, Wonder Trade, online Festival Plaza | No | Ended with 3DS online play on 8 April 2024 |
| Pokémon Bank | Until 25 February 2027 | Only if Bank is already installed. It can't be downloaded anymore |
| Pokémon HOME to Sun and Moon | No | HOME doesn't send Pokémon back to 3DS games |
Pokémon Bank can still move Pokémon into Sun and Moon from your other 3DS Pokémon games, and anything you withdraw counts as owned. A Bank deposit isn't a trade, though, so a Kadabra or Haunter won't evolve on the way. Bank shuts down on Thursday 25 February 2027 at 7:00 p.m. PST. Its transfer to Pokémon HOME closes at the same time.
There is no National Pokédex on the cartridge
Sun and Moon have no National Pokédex mode, and none unlocks after the Pokémon League. Pokémon from outside the Alola list, such as the Island Scan catches, are stored and battle normally, but they don't get an Alola number. The only national view was the Pokédex inside Pokémon Bank, and it ends with Bank.
Pokémon introduced in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon (Poipole, Naganadel, Stakataka, Blacephalon and Zeraora) can't be moved into Sun and Moon at all.
Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon numbers won't match
Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon expanded the Alola Pokédex, so their numbers don't line up with this one. If a list shows Buneary at #024, it is the Ultra list. Sun and Moon put Pichu there.
| Sun and Moon | Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon | |
|---|---|---|
| Listed | 302 | 403 |
| Needed for the Shiny Charm | 300 | 400 |
| Optional Mythicals | Magearna, Marshadow | Magearna, Marshadow, Zeraora |
| #024 | Pichu | Buneary |
| Last entry | #302 Marshadow | #403 Zeraora |
Island Scan and QR results that never join this list
Collect 100 QR points and the QR Scanner can run an Island Scan. For one hour, a Pokémon from outside Alola appears on the island you're standing on. Which one depends on the island and the day of the week. These are real catches, but none of them is on the Alola list, so they never count toward 300. Island Scan doesn't work on Aether Paradise or in Ultra Space.
| Island | Island Scan Pokémon by day |
|---|---|
| Melemele | Totodile (Mon), Deino (Tue), Horsea (Wed), Klink (Thu), Chikorita (Fri), Litwick (Sat), Cyndaquil (Sun) |
| Akala | Spheal (Mon), Luxio (Tue), Honedge (Wed), Venipede (Thu), Bellsprout (Fri), Marill (Sat), Gothita (Sun) |
| Ula'ula | Swinub (Mon), Duosion (Tue), Roselia (Wed), Staravia (Thu), Vigoroth (Fri), Axew (Sat), Rhyhorn (Sun) |
| Poni | Conkeldurr (Mon), Togekiss (Tue), Leavanny (Wed), Serperior (Thu), Samurott (Fri), Emboar (Sat), Eelektross (Sun) |
Every species, its island numbers and how to get it are in the Alola Pokédex checklist.
Pokémon Sun and Moon Pokédex FAQ
Do you need 302 Pokémon or 300?
300. The Game Director doesn't count Magearna or Marshadow, so 300 owned out of the 302 listed earns the Shiny Charm.
Does a QR scan count as caught?
No. A QR scan marks the Pokémon as seen and adds points toward Island Scan. The slot fills only once you own that species.
Do I need both Lycanroc forms, or every Alolan form?
No. Owned is counted per species. One Lycanroc in either form, or one Vulpix in either form, fills the slot.
Is there a National Pokédex in Sun and Moon?
No. The cartridge only has the Alola list and its four island lists.
Do Island Scan Pokémon fill the Alola Pokédex?
No. All 28 Island Scan species, the Johto and Unova starters among them, are outside the Alola list.
Can you still complete the Alola Pokédex on a 3DS?
Yes, with local wireless trading. One cartridge reaches 269 of the 300 by itself. The other 31 need a trade with a second system. Pokémon Bank can also bring Pokémon in until 25 February 2027 if it is already installed.
Why doesn't my Ultra Sun number match?
Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon added 101 Pokémon to the Alola list, so most numbers after #023 shift. Use a Sun and Moon list for Sun and Moon.
