Heart Scale in Pokémon Y: Old Rod Luvdisc on Route 8 and Madam Reminder

Heart Scales in Pokémon Y come from Old Rod Luvdisc, 100% on Route 8’s coast, with a 50% hold. Steal the scale with Thief, then pay Madam Reminder in Dendemille.

In Pokémon Y, a Heart Scale pays Madam Reminder to teach one forgotten level-up move, and you farm them from Luvdisc. No shop sells them. Use the Old Rod on a Kalos beach, such as the coast of Route 8. Every Old Rod encounter there is a level 15 Luvdisc, and half of them hold a Heart Scale. Catch the Luvdisc or steal the scale with Thief. Then take it to Dendemille Town. A Good Rod on the same beaches never reels in Luvdisc. Pokémon X works the same way.

Spend it on Madam Reminder in Dendemille

The Move Deleter and Madam Reminder share the brown-roofed house northeast of the Pokémon Center.

Madam Reminder and the Move Deleter share a house in Dendemille, just northeast of the Pokémon Center. For one Heart Scale, Madam Reminder makes a Pokémon remember any level-up move its species learns at or below its current level. You choose the Pokémon, then the move. If it already knows four moves, you pick one to forget, so you don’t need the Move Deleter first. The exception is an HM move, which she can’t replace. Each move costs one scale, so teaching four moves costs four.

A Pokémon that hatched in X or Y, or in a later game, can also relearn any move it knew when it hatched, Egg Moves included. Pokémon hatched in older games can’t, even after you transfer them.

The Move Deleter in the same house is free and never takes a scale. Use it to delete a move outright, such as an HM you want to swap for a forgotten move.

Farm Luvdisc with the Old Rod

You need the Old Rod first. A Fisherman on the lower floor of the Ambrette Aquarium, in Ambrette Town, gives it to you for free. Then:

  1. Stand on the sand at a Luvdisc beach and face the sea. The map below shows Route 8.
  2. Use the Old Rod. If an exclamation mark appears, press A to start the battle.
  3. Expect a level 15 Luvdisc. Every Old Rod encounter on these beaches is Luvdisc.
  4. Check whether it holds a Heart Scale. Half of them do. A Pokémon with Frisk in the lead shows the held item at the start of battle.
  5. If it holds one, catch it and take the scale off in the party menu (ITEM, then TAKE), or steal it with Thief (see below).
  6. Repeat until you have as many scales as you need.

Every Old Rod beach with Luvdisc

Six places have Luvdisc on the Old Rod. Route 8 is the one on the map above, but any of the others works just as well. X and Y have the same Old Rod table.

Why the Good Rod never gets Luvdisc

The Good Rod and the Super Rod both fish the same beaches, and neither one reels in Luvdisc there. You get other water Pokémon instead, such as Skrelp, Horsea or Remoraid, so stay on the Old Rod for Heart Scales. For the Good Rod itself, see the Good Rod in Pokémon Y.

Inland water is different again. The Old Rod in a river or pond gives Magikarp or Poliwag, not Luvdisc. If you’re fishing and only see those, you’re not on a Luvdisc tile. Move to the coast.

Steal the scale with Thief, Frisk and Compound Eyes

Luvdisc, a heart-shaped pink Water-type Pokémon
Luvdisc. Half of the wild ones hold a Heart Scale.

Thief is TM46. A Punk Girl in Cassius’s house in Camphrier Town gives it to you. Thief still deals damage, but it only steals when your Pokémon holds nothing, so the Pokémon using it needs an empty held slot. An item stolen from a wild Pokémon is yours to keep.

ItemWhere it comes from
Heart Scale Heart Scale50% of wild Luvdisc hold one in the common held-item slot

After a successful steal, your Pokémon is holding the scale, so its next Thief won’t take anything. Choose that Pokémon in the party, then ITEM and TAKE, before you steal again.

Compound Eyes works on the Luvdisc’s hold rate. If a Pokémon with Compound Eyes leads the party, the chance of a wild Pokémon holding a common item goes from 50% to 60%. The lead still counts when it has fainted. With Frisk in the lead, the battle shows the held item, so you know whether there’s a scale before you catch or steal.

Other places to get a Heart Scale

The Old Rod is the farm you can repeat. The other sources are slower, or you only get them once:

  • Route 8 has three. You can see one at the end of the narrow cliff path that starts on the east side of the Ambrette Town Pokémon Center. The other two are hidden (the Dowsing Machine can find them): one on a rock on an island in the northwest of the route, which needs Surf, and one on the beach northwest of the Aquarium stairs. The one on the beach reappears now and then.
  • Azure Bay has one hidden Heart Scale, on a rock on the long island on the west side of the bay. It doesn’t come back.
  • Frost Cavern has one on the river below the waterfall outside the cave. You need Surf and Waterfall to reach it. See the Frost Cavern walkthrough.
  • Smashing a rock with Rock Smash can turn one up, except in Glittering Cave.
  • A Pokémon with Pickup can find one at level 51 to 100. It’s too rare to plan around.
  • After the main story, Tierno stands in Coumarine City and asks each day to see a Pokémon that knows a certain dance move. Show him one and he gives you a Heart Scale.
  • Poké Miles, the Battle Maison and the Lumiose City shops don’t offer Heart Scales in X and Y.

Is it the same in Pokémon X?

Yes. The Heart Scale sources, Madam Reminder, the Thief TM and the Old Rod Luvdisc tables are the same in both games. The Good Rod and Super Rod species differ between the versions, as the beach table shows. On Route 8, the Good Rod reels Clauncher and Staryu in X, and Skrelp and Shellder in Y. Neither version’s Good Rod or Super Rod reels in Luvdisc.

FAQ

Can you buy Heart Scales in Pokémon Y?

No. No shop sells them, and you can only sell one for $50.

Do Luvdisc always hold a Heart Scale?

No. The Old Rod always gives you a Luvdisc on the beaches, but only half of them hold a Heart Scale, or 60% with a Compound Eyes leader.

Does the Good Rod get Heart Scales?

No. On the Luvdisc beaches, the Good Rod and Super Rod reel other water Pokémon instead.

Where is the Move Reminder in Pokémon Y?

In Dendemille Town, in the house just northeast of the Pokémon Center. The Move Deleter is in the same house.

Is the farm different in Pokémon X?

The Old Rod farm and Madam Reminder are the same. Only the Good Rod and Super Rod species change.

Why does the Bag sort the Heart Scale with evolution stones?

In X and Y, the Heart Scale sits in the Items pocket, and there’s no separate evolution stone pocket. Sorting the Bag by type puts it with the stones. That’s a sorting bug, and the scale still works normally.
