In Pokémon X, the Lucky Egg comes from a woman at the café tables on the left side of the Coumarine Hotel lobby, and she only hands it over if your lead Pokémon has maximum friendship (255). Whoever holds it gets 1.5× the Exp. Points it would normally earn in battle, so it’s a 50% boost. She gives out one egg. For more you have to go after wild Chansey in the Friend Safari: 5% of them hold one, and that goes up to 20% with a Compound Eyes Pokémon at the front of your party. You can’t buy one, Pickup won’t find one, and the Battle Maison doesn’t trade one for BP. Everything here is the same in Pokémon Y.

Where to get the Lucky Egg in Pokémon X
Coumarine City is the fourth Gym town. It comes in two halves, a harbor by the sea and a cliff-top area with the Gym, and a monorail runs between them. The hotel is in the harbor half, a short walk up the path from the Seaside monorail station. You can walk in as soon as you reach the city; beating Ramos isn’t required.

- Put the Pokémon you’ve spent the most time with at the front of your party.
- Walk into the Coumarine Hotel.
- Turn left from the entrance. The woman is by the café tables along the left wall, with her Marill right beside her.
- Talk to her. If your lead’s friendship is maxed, she gives you the Lucky Egg.
- Give it to the Pokémon you’re training: open the party menu, pick the Pokémon, then ITEM and GIVE.

Several other guests stand around the lobby, so look for the Marill. She’s the only one with it.
Why she won’t give you the egg
If your lead isn’t friendly enough, you leave without the egg. She is looking for 255, the highest friendship value in the game, and X and Y use the same number. When it fails, it’s usually one of these:
| What happened | Why | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Your friendly Pokémon was in slot 2 | She checks the Pokémon at the front of the party | Move it to the first slot |
| It evolved into Espeon or Lucario | Friendship evolutions need 220, and she wants 255 | Keep raising it, then come back |
| It has five hearts in Pokémon-Amie | Amie hearts measure affection, which is a separate meter | Raise friendship instead (see below) |
| You led with a freshly caught Pokémon | Most species start at 70 | Lead with your starter or a long-time teammate |
How to raise friendship to 255
Hold a Soothe Bell. It makes most friendship gains bigger, and you pick it up in Shalour City, before you reach Coumarine.- Get the daily massage in Cyllage City.
- Just play with it in the party. Walking, leveling up and vitamins all add friendship. Fainting and the bitter herbal medicines take it away.
- A Pokémon caught in a Luxury Ball gains friendship faster.
The friendship section of how to get Espeon in Pokémon X has a longer list. Espeon only needs 220, though, and the hotel wants 255.
How to check it’s at 255
The friendship rater in the Pokémon Fan Club in Laverre City comments on your lead. At 255 the line is “It’s amazingly friendly toward you! It must be so happy spending every day with you!” If you hear that you must really like it and always keep it by your side, it’s somewhere from 200 to 254. Laverre is two Gyms on, after Lumiose City, so until then keep raising friendship and drop by the hotel every so often.
What the Lucky Egg actually does
The holder gets 1.5× the Exp. Points it would have earned from the battle. The item description only says it “earns extra Exp. Points in battle,” without a number. The number is 1.5×, not 2×. The bonus goes to the holder alone, so one egg won’t speed up the rest of the team.
What it stacks with
X and Y multiply these bonuses together. Put the egg on a traded Pokémon and you get 1.5 × 1.5, or 2.25× the base Exp.
| Bonus | Multiplier | When |
|---|---|---|
| Lucky Egg | 1.5× | The Pokémon holds it |
| Trainer battle | 1.5× | The Pokémon you beat belongs to a Trainer |
| Traded Pokémon | 1.5×, or 1.7× from a game in another language | Someone else is its original Trainer |
| Pokémon-Amie | 1.2× | It has two or more hearts of affection |
| Exp. Point Power (O-Power) | 1.2×, 1.5× or 2× | Level 1, 2 or 3 is active |
| Past its evolution level | 1.2× | It could have evolved by leveling up but hasn’t |
| Exp. Share, sat out | 0.5× | The Exp. Share is on and it stayed on the bench |
Where there’s no battle Exp., the egg has nothing to multiply: Battle Maison battles, Super Training and Rare Candies.
How to get more than one Lucky Egg
After the hotel egg, your next source is wild Chansey, and the only wild Chansey in Kalos are in the Friend Safari in Kiloude City, which opens once you’ve entered the Hall of Fame. Chansey, Blissey and Happiny don’t show up in any other grass, cave or water spot in X or Y.

Find a Normal Friend Safari with Chansey
Each friend on your 3DS friend list gives you one safari with a type and three Pokémon. In a Normal-type safari the third Pokémon can be Chansey, Eevee, Ditto or Smeargle, so you may have to check several Normal safaris before you find a Chansey one.
The third slot stays locked until that friend has entered the Hall of Fame and your game has seen them in the PSS at the same time. Nintendo shut down online play for the 3DS on April 8, 2024 (April 9 in some regions). Safaris you had unlocked before then still work, but a new friend’s third slot now needs the two of you together in person, playing over local wireless. Where to find Eevee in Pokémon X covers the same Normal safari if you want Eevee too.
Set up the farm

Put a Compound Eyes Pokémon in front. Compound Eyes is Butterfree’s regular Ability (its Hidden Ability is Tinted Lens). Catch a Caterpie in Santalune Forest, evolve it into Butterfree (Metapod evolves at level 10), and check the Summary screen to make sure it has Compound Eyes. The Ability still works from the first slot when that Pokémon has fainted, so you can let it faint and leave it there.- Bring a Pokémon with Frisk if you have one. Frisk shows you what the Chansey is holding as the battle starts, so you can skip the Lucky Punch ones.
- Teach Thief (TM46), which you get from a Punk Girl in Cassius’s house in Camphrier Town. Thief only takes the item if your Pokémon is holding nothing, so take each stolen item off before the next fight.
- Or catch the Chansey and take the item off it in the party menu. Its catch rate is 30, so Ultra Balls help.
Expect a pile of Lucky Punches. Chansey hold one 50% of the time, or 60% with Compound Eyes, so most of what you steal will be Punches. That’s normal; the egg is simply the rare drop.
| Item | Normal lead | Compound Eyes lead |
|---|---|---|
Lucky Punch | 50% | 60% |
Lucky Egg | 5% | 20% |
Trading works too: someone else can send you a Pokémon that’s holding a Lucky Egg.
Things that won’t get you a Lucky Egg
- No Poké Mart or boutique in Kalos sells it.
- It isn’t on the X and Y Pickup list.
- The Battle Maison doesn’t offer it for BP, and Maison battles give no Exp. anyway.
- Tall grass outside the Friend Safari has no Chansey, Blissey or Happiny.
- A Japanese Christmas code for a Lucky Egg ran from December 21, 2013 to February 28, 2014. It’s long gone.
Is it worth farming more?
One egg covers the main story. Give it to whichever Pokémon is furthest behind and pass it along once that one catches up. A second egg pays off when you’re building a new team after the credits; on a traded Pokémon with Exp. Point Power running, it levels very quickly. If none of your Friend Safaris has Chansey, the hotel egg plus the Exp. Share will carry you most of the way. If it’s money you’re short of rather than Exp., the hold item you want is the Amulet Coin from Parfum Palace.
Not Pokémon GO or Legends: Z-A
Other Pokémon games use the same name for something different. In Pokémon GO the Lucky Egg is a timed item that doubles your Trainer XP for 30 minutes. In Pokémon Legends: Z-A you get it from a side mission. The 1.5× bonus, the Coumarine Hotel gift and the Chansey rates on this page are for X and Y on the 3DS only.
FAQ
Where is the Lucky Egg in Pokémon X?
In the Coumarine Hotel in Coumarine City. The woman at the café tables on the left of the lobby, next to a Marill, gives it to you if your lead Pokémon has maximum friendship.
Does the Lucky Egg double Exp. in X and Y?
No. It gives 1.5×, and only to the Pokémon holding it.
How many Lucky Eggs can you get?
The hotel gives one. Beyond that you need Friend Safari Chansey (5%, or 20% with Compound Eyes) or a trade.
Do Friend Safari Chansey hold Lucky Eggs?
Some do, but not many. Half of them carry a Lucky Punch, or 60% with Compound Eyes, and the Lucky Egg chance is 5%, rising to 20% with a Compound Eyes lead.
Does the Lucky Egg boost the whole party with the Exp. Share on?
Is it the same in Pokémon Y?
Yes. Pokémon Y has the same hotel, the same friendship check and the same Chansey hold rates.
What it does
is a key item that you switch on from the Bag, and nobody holds it. While it’s on, each Pokémon that sat out the battle and isn’t fainted gets half the Exp. A benched Pokémon holding the Lucky Egg gets 1.5× that half. A fainted one gets nothing at all, egg or no egg, and the Pokémon that fought keeps its full share.
