Each of these stone slabs has two arrows on it. To open the manhole, you must fill the board with slabs so that all four rows, all four columns, and both diagonals contain one of each direction of arrow. Some of the slabs are already firmly fixed in place, but you can freely rotate the rest. Are you up to the task?

Puzzle names

The North American title is Breaking the Seal. In Japanese it's 封印された入り口.

Wrong Puzzle 134?

Daily Puzzle 134 is Tile Show 07, from the Whose Tile Is It Anyway? set. It is separate from Breaking the Seal. Puzzle numbers in other Layton games also refer to different puzzles.

Where you find it

Open the sealed entrance at the City Monument during Chapter 8.

Before you open a hint

Use the fixed arrows to eliminate directions. Check both diagonals as well as the four rows and four columns.

Hints, one at a time

These are the game's own hints, word for word from the North American version and in the same order. Open only the next one you need. In the game, Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two.

Hint 1

Start by placing panels next to the ones already fixed in place.

The bottom-right corner of the board is a good place to start, as there's only one orientation of panel that can fit there. Check the row and column for this space, and choose a panel that will fill the space without duplicating the existing arrows.

Hint 2

The space on the bottom right of the board needs a piece with a left and right arrow on it. The left arrow should be on top, as there's already a right arrow in the third row down.

Next, let's look at the space at the top of the second column from the right. After the bottom-right panel is in position, it should be easy to work out which one goes here.

Hint 3

With the first two hints, you should have already filled in the right half of the board.

Now let's see which panel fits in the center of the leftmost column. You'll be completing two rows with this piece, so there's only one panel that could go here.

Super Hint

You should have gathered from Hint 3 that the panel with a right and down arrow goes in the center of the leftmost column on the board.

That leaves only two spaces left to fill. Don't forget that you need to pay attention to the diagonals, or else you won't know which panel goes where.

Answer and full solution

The answer and the worked explanation are hidden below. Open them when you are ready.

Show the answer

Complete the board with the arrow directions in the table below. Rows run from top to bottom; columns run from left to right.

Final arrow directions
RowColumn 1Column 2Column 3Column 4
1LeftUpRightDown
2RightDownLeftUp
3DownRightUpLeft
4UpLeftDownRight

The bottom-right vertical slab has left above right. The upper slab in column 3 has right above left. The middle slab in column 1 has right above down. Finish the top-left horizontal pair with left, up and the bottom-left pair with up, left.

Each long diagonal also contains one of each arrow. Check those two lines if the rows and columns look right but the seal remains closed.
