All 12 ocarina songs
Link learns 12 set songs in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D: six songs that open the way forward and six warp songs taught by Sheik. On 3DS the five ocarina notes are played with L, R, Y, X and A. On N64 the same notes were A, C-Down, C-Right, C-Left and C-Up. The melodies are the same in both versions; only the buttons changed. There is also the Scarecrow’s Song, a tune you make up yourself (see the end of this page).
| Note (low to high) | 3DS button | N64 button |
|---|---|---|
| D | L | A |
| F | R | C-Down |
| A | Y | C-Right |
| B | X | C-Left |
| High D | A | C-Up |
To play on 3DS, tap the ocarina icon on the touch screen (it has its own slot, so you don’t need to put it on an item button), then press the notes. Each button also has a fixed pitch, so you can hum along: L is the lowest note and A is the highest.
The six main songs
Zelda’s Lullaby
3DS: X, A, Y, X, A, Y. N64: C-Left, C-Up, C-Right, C-Left, C-Up, C-Right.
Impa teaches it after you meet Princess Zelda in the castle courtyard. It proves your link to the Royal Family: play it on Triforce symbols to open doors and solve puzzles. Play it at the waterfall on Zora’s River to open the way into Zora’s Domain.
Epona’s Song
3DS: A, X, Y, A, X, Y. N64: C-Up, C-Left, C-Right, C-Up, C-Left, C-Right.
Malon teaches it at Lon Lon Ranch: as young Link, talk to her in the corral, then take out your ocarina in front of her. Once adult Link has won Epona from Ingo and ridden her out of the ranch, the song calls her to you in open areas. Play it to a cow while you carry an empty bottle to get Lon Lon Milk.
Saria’s Song
3DS: R, Y, X, R, Y, X. N64: C-Down, C-Right, C-Left, C-Down, C-Right, C-Left.
Saria teaches it in the Sacred Forest Meadow. Play it where nothing else reacts to it and choose Talk to Saria for a hint, play it to Darunia in Goron City to get the Goron’s Bracelet, and play it to the Skull Kid in the Lost Woods for a Piece of Heart. For the Lost Woods route to Saria and every use, see Saria’s Song in Ocarina of Time 3D.
Sun’s Song
3DS: Y, R, A, Y, R, A. N64: C-Right, C-Down, C-Up, C-Right, C-Down, C-Up.
Written on the wall of the Royal Family’s Tomb under Kakariko Graveyard (open the tomb with Zelda’s Lullaby). It switches between day and night, and it freezes nearby ReDeads for a few seconds.
Song of Time
3DS: Y, L, R, Y, L, R. N64: C-Right, A, C-Down, C-Right, A, C-Down.
Zelda teaches it at the Hyrule Castle moat after she throws you the Ocarina of Time. Play it in the Temple of Time to open the Door of Time. It also makes blue Time Blocks with the Song of Time symbol appear or disappear. For where Zelda teaches it, why a Time Block won’t move and every Time Block location, see the Song of Time in Ocarina of Time 3D.
Song of Storms
3DS: L, R, A, L, R, A. N64: A, C-Down, C-Up, A, C-Down, C-Up.
Learned from the man in the Kakariko windmill as adult Link; he blames young Link for it. Back in the past, play it in the windmill to drain the well and reach the Bottom of the Well. It also brings rain, opens some hidden grottos and makes the frogs at Zora’s River give you a Piece of Heart.
The six warp songs
Sheik teaches all six. Each one takes you to its own fixed warp point near a temple, and you can play them from almost anywhere outdoors.
Minuet of Forest
3DS: L, A, X, Y, X, Y. N64: A, C-Up, C-Left, C-Right, C-Left, C-Right.
Learned from Sheik in the Sacred Forest Meadow as adult Link. Warps you to the Sacred Forest Meadow, next to the Forest Temple.
Bolero of Fire
3DS: R, L, R, L, Y, R, Y, R. N64: C-Down, A, C-Down, A, C-Right, C-Down, C-Right, C-Down.
Learned from Sheik inside Death Mountain Crater, on the ledge near the Fire Temple entrance (not at the crater’s entrance from the summit). At eight notes it is the longest song. Warps you to Death Mountain Crater, near the Fire Temple.
Serenade of Water
3DS: L, R, Y, Y, X. N64: A, C-Down, C-Right, C-Right, C-Left.
Learned from Sheik at the end of the Ice Cavern. At five notes it is the shortest song. Warps you to the island platform in Lake Hylia, above the Water Temple.
Nocturne of Shadow
3DS: X, Y, Y, L, X, Y, R. N64: C-Left, C-Right, C-Right, A, C-Left, C-Right, C-Down.
Learned from Sheik in Kakariko Village after the Forest, Fire and Water Temples. Warps you above the graveyard, at the Shadow Temple entrance.
Requiem of Spirit
3DS: L, R, L, Y, R, L. N64: A, C-Down, A, C-Right, C-Down, A.
Learned from Sheik at the Desert Colossus: as adult Link, walk into the Spirit Temple and back out, and Sheik appears outside. You need it as young Link too, so you can enter the temple from the child side. Warps you to the Desert Colossus.
Prelude of Light
3DS: A, Y, A, Y, X, A. N64: C-Up, C-Right, C-Up, C-Right, C-Left, C-Up.
Learned from Sheik in the Temple of Time after the Forest Temple. Warps you inside the Temple of Time.
Scarecrow’s Song
The Scarecrow’s Song has no set notes: you compose it. As young Link, take out your ocarina next to Bonooru, the scarecrow by the lakeside laboratory at Lake Hylia, and play any eight notes (they can’t all be the same note). Seven years later, return as adult Link and play the same eight notes to Bonooru again. After that, playing your song at certain spots makes Pierre the scarecrow appear as a target for the Hookshot or Longshot. Write your melody down: you need to remember it as an adult.
