What changed from the N64 original

The 2011 remake keeps the same quest but reworks the controls and adds help for players who get stuck. Our guides note where the two versions differ.

Touch-screen inventory

Items, gear and the map sit on the bottom screen. Iron Boots and Hover Boots become items you can swap with a tap.

Gyro aiming

Tilt the system to fine-tune your aim with the slingshot, bow and hookshot in first-person view.

Boss Challenge

After the Forest Temple, talk to Sheik in the Temple of Time, then rest in Link’s bed in Kokiri Forest to refight the eight dungeon bosses you’ve beaten. Beat all eight to unlock Boss Gauntlet.

Sheikah Stones

Hint stones play Visions, short clips that show how to get through the next part of the game.

Water Temple markers

Colored lines on the walls lead to each spot where you can change the water level.

Shard of Agony

The Stone of Agony is now the Shard of Agony. It signals on screen near hidden grottos instead of using rumble.

Master Quest

A mirrored Hyrule, with enemies that hit twice as hard

Finish the game once to unlock Master Quest for new save files. Hyrule is flipped left to right, enemies deal double damage, and every dungeon is remixed with new puzzles, enemies and item placements. Our Master Quest walkthroughs are written for the mirrored layout, so left always means left.
