Pokémon Sun Evolution Stones: Where Each One Is

All ten evolution stones in Pokémon Sun: four sold in Konikoni City for ₽3,000, six one-time finds, the Dawn Stone from Guzma, and why some stones do nothing.

Pokémon Sun has ten evolution stones. The stone shop in Konikoni City sells the Fire, Water, Thunder and Leaf Stones for ₽3,000 each. The other six are one-time pickups: the Ice Stone in Po Town, the Sun Stone on Blush Mountain, the Moon Stone on Route 13, the Shiny Stone on Ancient Poni Path, and the Dusk Stone on the seafloor off Poni Wilds. The Dawn Stone comes from Guzma after you become Champion. Poké Pelago's Isle Aphun can bring back more of any of them. You use a stone from the Bag, it is used up, and pressing B won't stop the evolution.

This page is for the original Pokémon Sun on Nintendo 3DS and 2DS, with or without the updates. Where Pokémon Moon differs, it says so. Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon move several stones, so a guide written for those games will send you to the wrong spot. The rules below are the Sun and Moon rules. Later games added new stone evolutions, and those don't work here.

Where each evolution stone is in Pokémon Sun

“One-time” means there is a single copy in the field. Once you take it, it doesn't come back. Every stone can also be found on Isle Aphun in Poké Pelago (see Getting another one).

The stone shop in Konikoni City

Konikoni City on Akala Island has several small shops in a row. One of them sells only four items: the Fire Stone, Water Stone, Thunder Stone and Leaf Stone, at ₽3,000 each. The stock never changes, so you can buy as many as you can pay for. No regular shop sells the other six stones. The only exception in Sun is the single Shiny Stone sold at the Malie City flea market (see below). Any shop buys stones back for ₽1,500.

The Leaf Stone has no copy on the ground anywhere in Sun. If you need one before you can farm Poké Pelago, this shop is where it comes from.

Fire, Thunder and Water Stones before Konikoni

You can pick up three of the shop stones on Akala Island before you reach Konikoni City.

  • Fire Stone: Diglett's Tunnel. Take the west branch and go down the stairs. On the north side of the stairs, use Tauros Charge to smash the rock blocking a narrow path. The Fire Stone is at the end of it.
  • Thunder Stone: Route 8, behind the trailer at the Fossil Restoration Center.
  • Water Stone: on the seafloor in the southwest corner of Route 8, south of the Karate Family trainers. Ride Lapras or Sharpedo over the spot and press A to pick it up.

Ice, Sun and Moon Stones on Ula'ula

  • Ice Stone: Po Town, in the walled pool yard on the west side of the Shady House. It is the only Ice Stone in the field. You need it for Alolan Vulpix, which is the Ice Stone Pokémon you can catch in Sun.
  • Sun Stone: an item ball on Blush Mountain, in the dirt yard near the parked truck.
  • Moon Stone: Route 13, on the grass next to a round pool of water.

Shiny and Dusk Stones on Poni

  • Shiny Stone: an item ball on Ancient Poni Path, at the edge of the tiled yard beside the path.
  • Dusk Stone: on the seafloor off the Poni Wilds beach, near the northern fishing spot and west of the northernmost rock. Ride Lapras or Sharpedo over the spot and press A to pick it up. The Dusk Stone page has a map of the spot and the Moon flea-market sale.

The Dawn Stone after you become Champion

There is no Dawn Stone in the field. After you become Champion, go to Route 2 on Melemele Island and enter the house to the right of the motel. Guzma is inside and tells you to meet him on Hau'oli City's beachfront. Go to the far end of the beach and battle him. His team is five Pokémon at level 63: Golisopod, Ariados, Pinsir, Masquerain and Scizor. When you win, he gives you the Dawn Stone.

If you are still on the island challenge, Isle Aphun in Poké Pelago is the only way to get a Dawn Stone, and it is a rare find there.

Malie City flea market and the Haina Desert man

Malie City's Community Center has a flea market. After you clear Nanu's grand trial, a boy there sells one stone for ₽3,000. In Sun it is a Shiny Stone; in Moon it is a Dusk Stone. He only has one. If he isn't ready to sell when you first talk to him, come back later.

After you become Champion, a man appears in Haina Desert. If you show him a Solrock, he gives you a Sun Stone. In Moon, he wants a Lunatone and gives a Moon Stone. You can't catch Solrock in Sun or Moon, so you have to bring one in from another game through Pokémon Bank, which must already be installed (it can no longer be downloaded) and closes on 25 February 2027. Most players can skip this one, since Blush Mountain and Poké Pelago both have Sun Stones.

The flea market stone depends on your version. The Haina Desert man needs a Solrock.

Getting another one

Field stones don't come back, so the Ice, Sun, Moon, Shiny, Dusk and Dawn Stones each have only one or two copies in the world. To get more:

  • Poké Pelago, Isle Aphun: Poké Pelago opens after Kiawe's trial. Isle Aphun starts with only the Path for Odd-Shard Hunting. The Path for Brilliant-Stone Hunting opens at phase 2, which needs 45 Pokémon in your boxes and 90 Poké Beans. Each trip takes 24 hours, and putting Poké Beans in the crate speeds it up. Any of the ten stones can come back. The Fire, Water, Thunder, Leaf, Ice, Sun and Moon Stones are common, and the Shiny, Dusk and Dawn Stones are rare. Interesting-Item Hunting can roll stones too.
  • Wild Pokémon: wild Clefairy, Cleffa and Jigglypuff have a 5% chance to hold a Moon Stone. Catch them, or use Thief or Covet. Clefairy and Cleffa live on Mount Hokulani. Jigglypuff lives on Routes 4 and 6.
  • Pickup: a Pokémon with the Pickup Ability can find a Sun Stone or Moon Stone after battles once it is level 11 or higher.

What each stone evolves in Sun

Two Kanto Pokémon change form when they evolve in Alola: a Thunder Stone turns Pikachu into Alolan Raichu, and a Leaf Stone turns Exeggcute into Alolan Exeggutor. Other Pokémon keep their own form. A Kanto Vulpix still becomes a regular Ninetales with a Fire Stone. The Ice Stone works on Alolan Vulpix and Alolan Sandshrew. Alolan Vulpix appears only in Sun, at Tapu Village and on Mount Lanakila. Alolan Sandshrew is Moon-only, so Sun players need a trade to get one.

A stone evolution is permanent. Many Pokémon stop learning moves by level once they evolve with a stone, so check the move list first if you want a move the earlier form learns.

The stone did nothing

If the Bag says a stone “won't have any effect,” the Pokémon most likely uses a different method in Sun. Several stone evolutions were only added in later games.

Evolutions in Pokémon Sun that don't use a stone: Leafeon at the Moss Rock, Glaceon at the Ice Rock, Vikavolt in Vast Poni Canyon, Crabominable on Mount Lanakila, Midday Lycanroc at level 25 in the daytime
None of these evolve with a stone in Sun.
You triedWhat works in Sun
Leaf Stone on EeveeLevel Eevee up near the Moss Rock in Lush Jungle to get Leafeon.
Ice Stone on EeveeLevel Eevee up near the Ice Rock on Mount Lanakila to get Glaceon.
Thunder Stone on Charjabug, Magneton or NosepassLevel it up in Vast Poni Canyon, which has the special magnetic field.
Ice Stone on CrabrawlerLevel it up on Mount Lanakila.
Sun Stone or Moon Stone on RockruffNo stone evolves Rockruff. In Sun it evolves from level 25 during the day and becomes Midday Lycanroc. Leveling it at night in Sun does nothing. Midnight Lycanroc only evolves in Moon, at night.
Giving the stone to the Pokémon to holdStones are used from the Bag. Choose the stone, then the Pokémon.
Using a stone on a Pokémon holding an EverstoneAn Everstone blocks stone evolutions in Sun and Moon. Take it off, then use the stone.
Metal Coat, Electirizer, Oval Stone and similar itemsThese are held items, not evolution stones. Most work only when the holder is traded or levels up.

Pressing B and the Everstone

You can cancel a level-up evolution by pressing B. You can't cancel a stone evolution. Once you use the stone, the Pokémon evolves and the stone is gone. An Everstone stops level-up evolutions, most trade evolutions (Kadabra still evolves when traded) and stone evolutions too: a Pokémon holding one can't use a stone, so take the Everstone off first.

Sun, Moon and Ultra Sun are not the same map

Most stones sit in the same place in Sun and Moon. These things change:

  • The Malie City flea market sells a Shiny Stone in Sun and a Dusk Stone in Moon.
  • The Haina Desert man gives a Sun Stone for a Solrock in Sun, and a Moon Stone for a Lunatone in Moon.
  • Alolan Vulpix is the Ice Stone Pokémon in Sun. Alolan Sandshrew is the one in Moon.
  • Rockruff only becomes Midday Lycanroc in Sun (daytime) and Midnight Lycanroc in Moon (nighttime).

Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are separate games with a changed map. The Thunder Stone is on Route 9 there instead of Route 8, the Dawn Stone is handed out somewhere other than Hau'oli City, and there are extra stones at places like Paniola Ranch. If a guide sends you to one of those spots, it was written for the Ultra games.
