Almost every damaging move in Pokémon Sun and Moon turns into its type’s Z-Move (Struggle is the exception), and the Z-Move’s power depends on the base move’s power. Thunderbolt (90) becomes Gigavolt Havoc at 175 power. Hurricane (110) becomes Supersonic Skystrike at 185. Status moves keep their effect and gain a bonus first: Z-Swords Dance resets your lowered stats, and Z-Splash raises Attack by 3 stages. You need the Z-Ring, a held Z-Crystal and a move that matches it. Your whole team gets one Z-Move per battle.
This page covers Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon v1.2 on 3DS. All numbers come from the game’s own move data. Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are a separate game. They add six more exclusive crystals and Z-Rotom Power for a second Z-Move. None of that works in Sun or Moon. See Sun vs Ultra Sun.
Z-Move lookup and Z-Power checker
The tool above has three parts. Move → Z-Move gives the Z-Move, its power, the crystal and where to get it. Why is Z-Power grey? checks a held crystal against your four moves. Z-Crystal checklist saves the crystals you have in this browser. The tables below hold the same data.
Z-Move power table
A damaging Z-Move keeps the base move’s physical or special split. Its power comes from this table.
| Base move power | Z-Move power |
|---|---|
| 55 or less | 100 |
| 60–65 | 120 |
| 70–75 | 140 |
| 80–85 | 160 |
| 90–95 | 175 |
| 100 | 180 |
| 110 | 185 |
| 120–125 | 190 |
| 130 | 195 |
| 140 or more | 200 |
A damaging Z-Move never misses unless the target is in a semi-invulnerable turn (Fly, Bounce, Dig, Dive, Phantom Force, Shadow Force, Sky Drop). It hits one target. The base move’s extra effects and priority are dropped. It uses 1 PP of the base move.
Moves that do not follow the table

Where to get every Z-Crystal
Crystals are gifts, so they never show as items on the map. You keep a copy in the Bag when a Pokémon holds one, so your whole team can hold the same crystal. Locations are the same in Sun and Moon.

|---|---|---|---|
| Melemele | Normalium Z | Verdant Cavern | Pedestal after Ilima’s trial. |
| Melemele | Fightinium Z | Iki Town | Hala, after his grand trial. |
| Melemele | Flyinium Z | Ten Carat Hill | Optional pedestal behind boulders that need Machamp Shove. Easy to miss. |
| Akala | Waterium Z | Brooklet Hill | Lana, after her trial. |

Why the Z-Power button stays grey
- No matching move: a type crystal needs a move of that type. A Torracat holding Firium Z with only Scratch, Bite and Double Kick shows nothing. An exclusive crystal needs its exact move.
- No Z-Ring yet: Hala gives it to you at the Iki Town festival, after your second battle with Hau.
- Already used one: one Z-Move per battle for your whole team.
- Wrong Pokémon or form: Decidium Z needs Decidueye, not Rowlet or Dartrix. Aloraichium Z needs Alolan Raichu. If the evolved Pokémon lost its signature move, the Move Reminder in the Mount Lanakila Pokémon Center teaches it again.
- Mega Evolution: a Mega-Evolved Pokémon cannot use a Z-Move.
- No PP left on the matching move.
Common questions
Does a held Z-Crystal trade with the Pokémon?
No. Trading removes the crystal, and you keep it in your Bag.
Can I use Z-Moves in the Battle Tree?
Yes, one per battle. Two Pokémon cannot hold the same item there, so give each a different crystal.
Does Protect stop a Z-Move?
Not fully. A damaging Z-Move still deals about a quarter of its damage through Protect and Detect.
