Miracle Mask Mysteries: All 10, When They Open and When They're Solved

All ten Mysteries in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask: what each one asks, the chapter and place where it joins the list, and when the story answers it. The answers stay hidden until you tap to reveal them.

Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask keeps ten Mysteries in the Professor's trunk. Each one is a big question about Monte d'Or, and the story fills in the answer as you play. The list below doesn't give away any answers. It shows what each mystery asks, where it joins your list and when you'll see the answer. That means it names every mystery, including chapters and places you may not have reached yet. The answers are further down, each one hidden until you tap it.

How to open the Mysteries

Tap the trunk on the Touch Screen, then tap Mysteries. The game shows you how to use it in Chapter 1, in the Carnival Arcade. Each mystery you've found has its own picture card on the green table. Cards for mysteries you haven't reached yet are shown face down.

The Mysteries screen in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask. On the top screen, a cream panel with a question-mark icon reads The Petrification Incident, and below it Layton has a speech bubble with one of his notes. On the Touch Screen, seven picture cards sit on a green table with NEW! over cards 6 and 7, three cards are still face down, and a Layton's Thoughts button and a Back button sit on the wooden bar.

  • Tap a card to read that mystery's question on the top screen. A question-mark icon means it's still open. An exclamation mark means it's been solved.
  • Layton's Thoughts shows the Professor's notes on the mystery you picked. New notes are added as the story goes on.
  • NEW! appears over a card when a mystery has just been added or just been solved. The trunk shows NEW! too, so you can see when there's something to look at.

When new mysteries arrive

Mysteries only join the list in four parts of the story: the Prologue, Chapter 1, Chapter 3 and Chapter 5. The flashback chapters and the last chapters add none. Every mystery is added and solved by a story scene, so you can't miss one.

All ten mystery cards on a green table, grouped by chapter: the Prologue has cards 1 and 2, Chapter 1 has cards 3 and 4, Chapter 3 has cards 5, 6 and 7, and Chapter 5 has cards 8, 9 and 10, with each title written under its card.
Illustration of when the mysteries join: two in the Prologue, two in Chapter 1, then three each in Chapters 3 and 5.
Five views of Monte d'Or, each with the mystery cards that start there: Carnival Square with cards 1, 2 and 3; Ledore Mansion (Parlor / Garden) with cards 4, 8 and 9; the One-Ring Circus with card 5; Gallery Plaza with cards 6 and 7; and Pumpkin Spinners with card 10.

Why three mysteries look unsolved after the credits

Mysteries 1, 8 and 9 (The Miracle of Monte d'Or, Henry's Suspicious Behavior and Angela's Suspicious Behavior) are all answered in the Epilogue at Gallery Plaza, after the final chapter. After the credits, you can load your clear save and keep exploring. If you open the trunk there, those three can still show the question-mark icon. Nothing is missing from your game: all three were answered in the ending you just watched.

Mysteries, the Journal, the Puzzle Index and Puzzle 126

  • Mysteries aren't puzzles. They give no picarats, and they don't count towards the Puzzle Index.
  • Layton's Journal is a separate trunk menu. It keeps a running summary of the story, for both the present-day chapters and the flashbacks.
  • The Puzzle Index holds 150 numbered puzzles: 135 in the story and 15 in Layton's Challenges.
  • Puzzle 126, Mystery Room, is an ordinary puzzle, not one of the Mysteries. It's a 40-picarat Multiple Choice puzzle at the Front Desk in Chapter 7. Its hints and answer are on the Puzzle 126 page.

The answers to each mystery

Everything in this section is a story spoiler. Each answer stays hidden until you tap it, so open only the ones you've already seen in the game.

1. The Miracle of Monte d'Or (answered in the Epilogue)

About 18 years ago, Henry offered a large reward for Randall's return. Fortune seekers poured into his little inn in the desert, the Reunion Inn, to join the search, and the city grew up around it. Monte d'Or was built on Henry's devotion to his missing friend.

2. The Petrification Incident (answered in Chapter 5)

Nobody was turned to stone. The culprits set statues in place under cover of the parade, then shouted that they had seen people turn to stone. The crowd panicked and fled, and the trick was done.

3. The Mask of Chaos (answered at the end of Chapter 7)

The mask has no magic of its own. Randall used the legend around it to make people believe in its power, as part of his plan to get revenge on Henry by ruining Monte d'Or.

4. The Masked Gentleman (answered at the end of Chapter 7)

The Masked Gentleman is Randall, Layton's long-lost friend. He believed Henry had betrayed him, and he staged his "dark miracles" to destroy the city Henry built.

5. Traces of Another Civilization (answered in Chapter 8)

Monte d'Or stands on top of the ruins of Akbadain, which were left by the ancient Azran civilization. The old designs you see around the city are the small parts of those ruins that show above ground.

6. The Mask of Order (answered in Chapter 8)

The Mask of Order doesn't cancel out the Mask of Chaos. The two are halves of one artifact, and they only have power when they're put back together. You learn this right after Puzzle 135 at the Mask Pedestal.

7. The Levitation Incident (answered in Chapter 5)

The Masked Gentleman walked along wires strung between the museum and the arcade. The people who "floated" away were his helpers. Balloons lifted them up, and dark cloths hid them against the night sky.

8. Henry's Suspicious Behavior (answered in the Epilogue)

Henry's secret was his devotion to Randall. He shaped the Reunion Inn and the city around Randall's return, down to recreating part of Randall's old bedroom, and he guarded everything his friend cared about.

9. Angela's Suspicious Behavior (answered in the Epilogue)

At some point Angela was replaced by Descole in disguise. Posing as her, he tried to trick Henry into revealing where the Mask of Order was.

10. The Vanishing Incident (answered in Chapter 7)

The crowd never left. The Masked Gentleman used the darkness inside Topsy Tower to disorient Layton and his friends. He then led them out into an exact, empty copy of the park, so it looked as if all the people had vanished. Topsy Tower looks the same from every side, which made the switch easy to miss.

Questions

How many Mysteries are there in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask?

Ten. They join the list in the Prologue, Chapter 1, Chapter 3 and Chapter 5, and the story answers all ten by the end of the Epilogue.

Can I miss a mystery?

No. Each one is added and solved by a story scene, so playing through the story fills in the whole list.

Do Mysteries give picarats?

No. Picarats only come from puzzles. The Mysteries are a story record, like Layton's Journal.

Why do some mysteries still show a question mark after I finished the game?

Mysteries 1, 8 and 9 are answered in the final scenes. After the credits, you can load your clear save and keep exploring, and those three can still look open there.

What does Layton's Thoughts do?

It shows the Professor's notes on the mystery you've picked. The notes grow as the story goes on, so check it whenever you see NEW!
