Puzzle 126 is Mystery Room, a 40-picarat Multiple Choice puzzle that Mordy gives you at the Front Desk of the Reunion Inn, in Chapter 7. The numbers on the door of room 2134 have gone missing, and the hotel has put long, rectangular plates in their place. You're shown the plates for the 2, the 1 and the 3, and you have to pick which of four sets, A to D, makes the 4. You need to solve it to go on with the story.
This page covers story Puzzle 126 in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, the 3DS game (US and UK English). The door and the answer are the same in the US and UK English versions, and the UK version calls the puzzle Room 2134 Mystery; quotes use the North American text. Despite the name, Mystery Room is an ordinary puzzle, not one of the game's ten Mysteries. If you're after those, or Daily Puzzle 126, see Wrong Puzzle 126? below.

Wrong Puzzle 126?
- The Mysteries list in the Professor's trunk is something else. Mystery Room is just a puzzle with a door number in it. The ten Mysteries, the big questions about Monte d'Or that the story answers as you go, are covered on the Miracle Mask Mysteries page.
- Daily Puzzle 126 is Tortoises 06, from the Sun, Sand, and Turtles set.
- Puzzle 125, A Day at the Races, is the puzzle before this one, at the Racetrack. If yours asks who is in the yellow area, that's the one you've got.
- Puzzle 127, Ace of Diamonds, is the next puzzle, in the Office at the Reunion Inn. If yours shows three swords on a wall, that's the one you've got.
- Puzzle 126 in another Layton game is a different puzzle. If yours doesn't show a door with the number 2134, you're in the wrong game.
Where you find it
In Chapter 7 the investigation leads to the Reunion Inn, the hotel that Henry built while he was searching for Randall. Take the tram there, go inside, and when the objective reads "Talk to Mordy!", talk to Mordy at the Front Desk.
Mordy says, "Welcome to the Reunion Inn! We've been expecting you, Professor." He knows why you've come, and Layton asks, "Mordy, would it be possible for us to investigate the premises here?" Mordy is willing, but since you've suspected Mr. Ledore, he says, "I can't cooperate with you until I'm certain I can trust you. To convince me your intentions are true, I'd like you to solve this puzzle."
The Front Desk has four hint coins: on the sofa, at the light, on the inn's emblem and on a pillar on the upper floor.
You have to solve it to move on. Mordy won't let you search the hotel until it's done. Afterwards, the objective changes to "Go to Henry's Office!"
When none of the plates looks like a 4
- The plates don't look like numbers. They aren't meant to. Think about where the plates go inside each square of the number panel, not about the shape of the plates themselves.
- The 2 and the 3 look the same. They do: both use the same two short plates. What changes is where they're placed.
- Start with the 1. Its plates are the only ones as wide as the space in the square. Hint 2 below explains what to do with them.
- A wrong answer. It lowers the picarats you can get. Read Hint 3 before you try again.
Hints, one at a time
These are the game's own hints, word for word from the North American version and in the same order. Open only the next one you need. In the game, Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two.
Hint 1: the plates for 2, 1 and 3
The 2, 1, and 3 are each represented by two brown plates.
The plates for the 2 and 3 look the same, and neither of them look like numbers.
Maybe they're being affixed to the door in some special way?
Hint 2: the plates for the 1
Did you notice that only the plates to be affixed for the 1 are the same width as the available space?
What would it look like if you put the plates in as they are? A minus sign?
You need to turn them first. That's how you get a 1 out of these plates.
Hint 3: the other numbers
If you affix the plates for the 1 as described in Hint 2, the remaining uncovered space in the square forms the number 1. How could you use the plates for the 2 and 3 to form those numbers in the same way?
And which plates could you use for the number 4?
Super Hint: placing the plates
Form the 2 by putting one of the plates on the left of the square, slightly down from the top, and the other in the diagonally opposite spot. For the 3, place both plates a little apart from each other on the left.
How many plates do you need for the 4? The digit is a cross shape with a diagonal bar, but remember there are two ways of writing it. In any case, you'd probably need more than just one or two plates.
Answer and full solution
The answer below names the right plate set, shows how the plates sit in each square and explains why the other sets can't work. Open it when you're ready.
Show the answer
Answer: D. Touch D on the touch screen.
The plates don't draw the numbers. They cover parts of each square on the number panel, and the blue space left uncovered is the number.
- 1: the two long plates are turned on end and fixed down the left and right sides of the square. The narrow strip left between them is the 1.
- 2: one short plate goes on the left, a little down from the top, and the other in the opposite corner, on the right and a little up from the bottom. The space that winds between them is the 2.
- 3: both short plates go on the left, a little apart. The space around them is the 3.
- 4: the 4 is the kind with an open top, and to leave that shape uncovered you need more than two plates. D is the only set with more than two pieces, three bars and a small square, so D is the one.
A is a single step-shaped plate, and B and C are pairs of bars like the ones used for the 1 and for the 2 and 3. One or two plates can't leave a 4-shaped space.

The game confirms it: "Correct! The answer is D. Once the plates are affixed within each square, the uncovered space in the square forms the number. That's a handy way to save on materials!"
If it still doesn't work out:
- You picked B. B's long bars are the plates for the 1. Laid flat they'd look like an equals sign, and either way two plates can't leave a 4.
- You picked A. A single plate leaves too much space uncovered.
- You picked C. C's two short bars are the same as the plates for the 2 and 3. They make those numbers, not the 4.
Picarats, hints and hint coins
Mystery Room shows 40 picarats when it starts. The puzzle can award 40, 30 or 20 picarats. Wrong answers may reduce the picarat value. A wrong answer brings the message "Too bad. I wonder how the plates are affixed to the door?" If you quit, Mordy says, "My apologies, but unless you can solve this puzzle, I simply cannot help you." When you talk to him again, Layton says, "I implore you to let us search this hotel," and Mordy answers, "Of course. Just solve this puzzle first."
Hints cost hint coins, not picarats. Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two, five in total. The hints on this page are free to open.
Does it unlock anything?
Yes. Solving it gives you a new play for your rabbit, The Greatest Treasure. The game announces, "You got a new play for your rabbit: "The Greatest Treasure"!" Its description says, "Bunny is hard at work preparing for a harsh winter, but the fox is still just playing every day. How will it all end?"
It also opens the way into the hotel. Mordy lets you search, and the story moves on to Henry's office.
Versions
- Nintendo 3DS family: this page covers the 3DS game. The door is on the top screen, and you choose a plate set on the touch screen.
- US and UK English versions: same door, same answer. The UK name is Room 2134 Mystery, and the UK question and wrong-answer message are worded a little differently.
The scene around the puzzle
Before the puzzle, Mordy explains, "Mr. Ledore informed us that you suspect the masked villain to be hiding here somewhere." He wants the culprit found "before he can strike again," but he won't help until he can trust you, so he sets the puzzle.
Once it's solved, Mordy agrees to cooperate, and the next stop is Henry's office. That's where you'll find Puzzle 127, Ace of Diamonds, and Puzzle 128, Faded Photos.
