Puzzle 032 is Target Practice, a 45-picarat puzzle from a police officer on Carnival Square in Monte d'Or, in Chapter 3. The target has sections worth 5, 35, 40, 75 and 100 points. The officer fires five shots and scores exactly 100. You write how many times he hit each section in five boxes on the touch screen.
This page covers story Puzzle 032 in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask on Nintendo 3DS, in the US and UK English versions. If you're after Daily Puzzle 032 or Puzzle 032 from another Layton game, see Wrong Puzzle 032? below.

What Puzzle 032 is
| Name | Target Practice |
|---|---|
| Type | Write Answer (five number boxes) |
| Picarats | 45 |
| Location | Carnival Square, Monte d'Or |
| Chapter | Chapter 3 |
| How you start it | Talk to the police officer on duty |
| Comes after | Puzzle 031, Emperor's Throne |
| Comes before | Puzzle 033, Chained Circle |
The puzzle says: "A police officer was doing some target practice one day. The target was divided into sections worth 5, 35, 40, 75, and 100 points. After five shots, his score totaled 100 points." Then it asks, "How many times did he manage to shoot each point section?" The objective bar says, "Where did each shot hit?"
On the touch screen there's one box for each section, from 5 on the left to 100 on the right. Tap a box and write a number in the panel below it, then submit.

Why it seems impossible
Try to make 100 from exactly five hits on the target and nothing works. 75 plus 5 five times is 100, but that's six shots, which is the example the game's first hint uses. 40 plus 40 is 80, and the 20 that's left can't be made from fives without going over five shots. 35 plus 35 plus 5 plus 5 plus 5 is only 85. No mix of exactly five hits adds up to 100.
That's the clue. The numbers aren't the problem. The question is hiding an assumption.
Puzzle names
The puzzle is called Target Practice in the North American version. The UK English version probably uses the same name. The question and the answer are the same in the US and UK English versions.
| Version | Puzzle name |
|---|---|
| North America | Target Practice |
| Japanese | 射撃のナゾ (Shageki no Nazo, "the shooting puzzle") |
The Japanese title is 射撃のナゾ. The North American version carries the same Japanese label.
Wrong Puzzle 032?
- Daily Puzzle 032 in Miracle Mask is a different puzzle: Tile 04.
- Puzzle 032 in another Layton game is a different puzzle. If yours doesn't show a paper target with five scoring sections, you're in the wrong game.
Where you get it
The police officer is standing guard on Carnival Square in Monte d'Or, in Chapter 3. He greets you with, "Hello, local citizen. There was criminal activity here last night. I have been assigned to investigate the scene and stand here." Before the puzzle he tells a joke and adds, "That was a humorous joke."
If you quit, he says, "I train harder than anyone else on the force. I'm training my neck muscles right now." If you answer wrong, he says, "We may all look the same, but only one of us has a heart of gold...and he's posted across town."
Carnival Square's hint coins are near the top of the building on the left, above the fountain and on the blue roof on the right, plus the coin from the game's hint coin tutorial. You've probably picked some of these up already. The Super Hint alone costs two coins.
If you leave Chapter 3 without solving it, it should be sent to Nanna Grams (known as Elizabeth in the UK version) at the start of Chapter 5. Missed puzzles can be picked up later, but not every hidden puzzle is, so it's safest to solve it while you're there.
When the answer comes back wrong
- Your numbers add up to five hits. No set of five hits on the target makes 100. If your boxes add up to five, the answer isn't right.
- You tried 75 plus five 5s. That's 100 points, but it's six shots, not five.
- A box has a number you didn't mean to leave. All five boxes are checked together, so look over each one before you submit.
Hints, one at a time
These hints follow the game's own hints. Open only the next one you need. In the game, Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two.
Hint 1: Try the 75 section
He scored 100 points in five shots. Say he hit the 75 section once. That leaves 25 points. Five hits on the 5 section would make 25, but that's six shots in total, so it isn't the answer. Try other mixes.
Hint 2: Exactly five hits never make 100
By now you've probably found that no mix of exactly five hits on the target makes 100 points. So not every shot has to be a hit. Is there a way to score points other than by hitting the target?
Hint 3: Not every shot hits
He fired five shots, but that doesn't mean all five hit the target. Any one shot could score 0 points.
Super Hint: Misses score 0
A shot that misses the target scores 0 points. Use that to make 100 points from five shots. Maybe the officer just got lucky.
Answer and full solution
The answer below gives the number for each box and shows why it works. Open it when you're ready.
Show the answer
The answer: he hit the 100-point section once, and his other four shots missed the target. Write 1 in the 100 box. Leave the 5, 35, 40 and 75 boxes empty, or write 0 in them.

Step by step:
- Five hits can't make 100. No mix of exactly five hits on the 5, 35, 40, 75 and 100 sections adds up to 100, so some shots must have missed.
- A shot can miss. The question says he fired five shots. It never says all five hit the target, and a miss scores 0.
- One shot does it all. A single hit on the 100 section makes 100 points. The other four shots missed and added nothing.
- Fill in the boxes. 1 in the 100 box, and 0 or nothing in the other four.
| Section | Hits | Points |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 0 | 0 |
| 35 | 0 | 0 |
| 40 | 0 | 0 |
| 75 | 0 | 0 |
| 100 | 1 | 100 |
| Missed the target | 4 | 0 |
The game's message when you're right says, "Bull's-eye! He hit the 100-point section once. He's either a hotshot...or a not shot."
Picarats, hints and hint coins
Target Practice shows 45 picarats when it starts. The puzzle can award 45, 40 or 35 picarats. Wrong answers may reduce the picarat value.
Hints cost hint coins, not picarats. The costs are one coin each for the first three hints and two for the Super Hint, five in total. Or use the free hints on this page and save your coins.
Does it unlock anything?
Target Practice probably gives no separate item or minigame reward. You get the picarats and the puzzle counts toward your total.
Versions and systems
- Nintendo 3DS, 3DS XL, 2DS and New 3DS: no difference. You write the numbers with the stylus.
- US and UK English versions: same question, same answer.
After the puzzle
When you solve it, the officer apologizes for calling you a local citizen and asks if you've met any witnesses to last night's incident. Layton tells him they saw it themselves. "That information would have been useful before I asked that question." He says every lead is a dead end, and all he wants is some cotton candy.
