Puzzle 113 in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask is Chip Champions, a 40-picarat Draw Line puzzle. Humbert gives it to you at the Racetrack Entrance in Chapter 7, and it's optional. Six people at the casino have six stacks of chips between them, and four of them say something about how their night went. Draw a line from each person, A to F, to the stack that belongs to them. Below you'll find the game's hints one at a time, then the full answer behind its own reveal.
This page covers story Puzzle 113 on Nintendo 3DS, using the North American text and screens. Looking for Daily Puzzle 113, or Puzzle 113 from another Layton game? See Wrong Puzzle 113? below.

The four clues, in short:
- A has only a quarter of the chips he started with.
- C started with as many chips as B and F lost, added together.
- E started with the same number of chips as B, but has more left now.
- D is completely out of chips.
B and F don't say anything. Four clues for six people sounds like too few, but the picture does most of the work once you know how to read it.
Wrong Puzzle 113?
- Daily Puzzle 113 is part of the separate set of daily downloadable puzzles, with its own numbering. It isn't Chip Champions.
- Puzzle 113 in another Layton game is a different puzzle. If yours has no casino chips and no six faces, check which game you're playing.
- The "n113" file in data dumps of Miracle Mask is a different puzzle as well. The game's internal numbers don't match the list numbers: that file is Puzzle 072, A Cup of Tiles. Chip Champions is stored under another internal number.
- Humbert's other puzzle is Puzzle 037, Spin Shenanigans, which he gives you by the City Monument in Chapter 3. Chip Champions is his second one.
Where to find Chip Champions

Puzzle 113 appears in Chapter 7, on the fourth day of the investigation in Monte d'Or. Go to the Racetrack Entrance. You can walk there from City Hall Steps, or ride the Monte d'Or tram to the Ticket Booth stop next door. Humbert is standing among the crowd in front of the gates. Tap him and he'll tell you he's up to his ears in casino debt and wants one big win at the races to pay it all back. When Layton advises him to stop, Humbert says he only listens to people who can solve his puzzle, and Chip Champions starts.
- Reach Chapter 7 in the story.
- Travel to the Racetrack Entrance, from City Hall Steps or from the Ticket Booth.
- Tap Humbert in the crowd in front of the gates.
- Listen to him talk about his debts and his bet. Chip Champions starts after the conversation.
Humbert is the same gambler who gave you Puzzle 037. If you back out of Chip Champions without solving it, just talk to him again. He'll say he might trust you if you manage to solve his puzzle, and it starts again.
Can you miss it?
Chip Champions isn't needed to finish the story, so you can walk straight past it. You won't lose it, though. After the credits, Humbert is still at the Racetrack Entrance in your finished save, and he still has the puzzle if you never got it.
Hint coins at the Racetrack Entrance
If you're low on hint coins, the Racetrack Entrance has four of its own. Tap around these spots to collect them:
- The neon horse head sign
- The upper window
- The speaker on the right
- The tree on the right
Each coin can be collected only once, so if a spot gives you nothing, you've already found that one.
How to read the picture
It's easy to treat each stack's height as the number of chips that person has now. That's not what the picture shows. Each stack is everything that person started with, and it's made of two kinds of chips:
- Orange chips are the chips the person still has.
- Gray chips are the chips the person has lost.
So the full height of a stack is the starting amount, the orange chips are what's left, and the gray chips are the loss. Count all three for every stack before you start on the clues.
To answer, drag on the touch screen from the small dot under a numbered chip to the dot above a person's head. The lines are allowed to cross. When all six people have a line, tap Submit. The game checks every pair, so a missing line counts as a wrong answer.
Hints, one at a time
These follow the game's own hints, in the same order, with a little more explanation. Open only the next one you need. In the game, hints are paid for with hint coins: as everywhere in Miracle Mask, Hints 1 to 3 cost one coin each and the Super Hint costs two.
Hint 1: start with a sure thing
Begin with the clue that leaves no room for doubt. One person's stack can be spotted at a glance: D says he's completely out of chips. Which stack has no orange chips at all?
Hint 2: the two equal starts
E says he and B started with the same number of chips, so their two stacks must be the same height. Only two stacks are. E also has more chips left than B, so compare the orange chips in those two stacks. Which one is E's?
Hint 3: C's sum
D's and E's clues are enough to place D, B and E. Now use C's clue: C's starting amount equals what B lost plus what F lost. You already know B's loss. F must own one of the three stacks that are still free, so try each one, add the losses, and see which total matches the height of a stack that's left.
Super Hint: the last two
By now you should have D on stack 2, B on stack 3, E on stack 6 and F on stack 1. That leaves A and C, and stacks 4 and 5. A says he has only a quarter of his starting chips left. Which of those two stacks is that?
Answer and full solution
The answer below covers every step, with pictures of the counted stacks and the finished puzzle. Open it when you're ready.
Show the answer
The answer is A–4, B–3, C–5, D–2, E–6, F–1. Draw a line from each person to the stack with that number, then tap Submit.
| Person | Stack | What gives it away |
|---|---|---|
| A | 4 | Started with 8 chips and has 2 left, a quarter |
| B | 3 | Started with 6 and has 2 left, fewer than E |
| C | 5 | Started with 7, which is B's loss (4) plus F's loss (3) |
| D | 2 | Every chip is gray: D is completely out |
| E | 6 | Started with 6 like B, but has 3 left |
| F | 1 | The only loss that makes C's sum work |
| Stack | Started with | Lost (gray) | Left (orange) | Owner |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 4 | 3 | 1 | F |
| 2 | 5 | 5 | 0 | D |
| 3 | 6 | 4 | 2 | B |
| 4 | 8 | 6 | 2 | A |
| 5 | 7 | 6 | 1 | C |
| 6 | 6 | 3 | 3 | E |

Step by step:
- D is stack 2. D says he's completely out of chips, and stack 2 is the only stack with no orange chips. All five of its chips are gray.
- E is stack 6 and B is stack 3. Only stacks 3 and 6 are the same height, 6 chips each, so they belong to B and E. Stack 6 has 3 orange chips and stack 3 has 2. E has more left, so E is stack 6 and B is stack 3. That means B lost 4.
- F is stack 1 and C is stack 5. Stacks 1, 4 and 5 are still free. If F is stack 1, F lost 3, and 4 plus 3 makes 7, exactly the height of stack 5. If F is stack 4 or stack 5, F lost 6, and 4 plus 6 makes 10, which no stack matches. So F is stack 1 and C is stack 5.
- A is stack 4. It's the only one left. Check it: stack 4 started with 8 and has 2 left, and 2 out of 8 is a quarter.
The game's closing message agrees, and adds that D's and E's comments are the key. Once those two are placed, C's sum does the rest.

The six lines to draw:
- Chip 1 to F, on the far right
- Chip 2 to D
- Chip 3 to B
- Chip 4 to A, on the far left
- Chip 5 to C
- Chip 6 to E
When it's correct, the top screen shows each person standing under their stack: F, D, B, A, C and E from left to right.
If your answer keeps failing:
- You matched by stack height. Height is the starting amount, not what's left. Count the orange chips for "left" and the gray chips for "lost".
- You swapped B and E. They started with the same 6 chips. E has more left, so E gets stack 6, the one with 3 orange chips.
- You swapped A and C. A is the quarter: 2 left out of 8. C is the stack that started with 7.
- A line is missing. All six people need a line, including B and F, who don't say anything.
Picarats and hint coins
Chip Champions starts at 40 picarats. The game's puzzle table also stores two lower values for it, 35 and 30. Across the series these are what a puzzle drops to after wrong answers, with the drop stopping after the second miss, and buying hints doesn't lower the value. Hint prices follow the same rule for every puzzle in the game: one hint coin each for Hints 1 to 3 and two for the Super Hint. The hints on this page are free, so save your coins for harder puzzles later in the game.
Versions and systems
- North America and UK: the English versions word some of the clues a little differently, but the picture and the answer are the same.
- Other languages: the stacks and faces don't change, so the same answer works in every language.
- Nintendo 2DS: the puzzle only uses the touch screen, so it plays the same with the 3D effect off or on a 2DS.
Humbert's bet (after the puzzle)
The puzzle fits the scene: six gamblers comparing what they've lost, set up by a man who has lost more than any of them. Humbert has picked a cart with a 20 on it, sure that a high number means a better racer. Solve the puzzle and Layton gently tells him again that it would be better for him to walk away. Humbert takes that as a dare and places the bet anyway.
Talk to him again later and he says the highest-numbered horse came in last. Since he'd picked number 20 for being a high number, that was his horse. "I was supposed to reverse it!" he groans, and then: "I've got nothing left to bet. I'm broke!" The next time you see him, he's using the chaos of the sand in town to slip away before anyone comes looking for him.
