Puzzle 034 is The Cat's Trophy, a 30-picarat hidden puzzle in Henry's Study in Ledore Mansion, in Chapter 3. Nobody gives it to you. You find it by tapping a plate in the study. A cat has knocked three plates off a dresser and run off with one of the pieces, and you choose which plate, A, B or C, the missing piece came from.

The puzzle says: "Drat! This pesky feline has knocked three plates off the dresser! The cat made off with one of the pieces. Can you tell which plate it's from?" The objective bar says, "Which plate?"
In the game, the top screen shows the broken pieces on the floor, and the touch screen shows the three plates before they broke: a five-sided plate A, a square plate B and a triangular plate C. The crack lines show that each plate broke into three pieces. Tap A, B or C to answer.
Why the pieces are confusing
The pieces are scattered and turned at odd angles, and they're all the same color with the same flower pattern. It isn't obvious at first which piece came from which plate.
Count first. Three plates in three pieces each makes nine pieces, and there are only eight on the floor. Then match each piece to a plate by its corners, its rim and the flowers on it.
Puzzle names
The puzzle is called The Cat's Trophy in the North American version. The UK English version probably uses the same name. The question and the answer are the same in the US and UK English versions.

Wrong Puzzle 034?

- Puzzle 034 in another Layton game is a different puzzle. If yours doesn't show three broken plates and a cat, you're in the wrong game.
Where you find it
In Chapter 3, Layton, Emmy and Luke go to Ledore Mansion. Henry Ledore is away, but they're allowed to look around his study. Talk to Angela in the parlor, then go right into Henry's Study. The puzzle is probably the blue plate on the right side of the room. Tap it and Emmy says, "That plate must have cost a fortune!"
If you quit, Emmy says, "OK, lesson learned. I wasn't going to touch it, anyway!" When you come back, Layton says, "I think that plate looks rather delicate, Emmy. How about reexamining this puzzle?"
Henry's Study has three hint coins: on the plate on the left, on the bookshelf and on the painting on the right.
Solve it while you're in the study. It isn't clear whether you can still get this one after you leave.
When the answer comes back wrong
- "That plate has all its pieces accounted for." That's the game's message for a wrong plate. All three pieces of the plate you picked are on the floor.
- You can't find the puzzle. It's a hidden puzzle, not one a character gives you. Tap around the right side of Henry's Study until you find the plate.
- You're matching pieces by shape alone. Look at the rim and the flower pattern on each piece too. The game's second hint says the pattern is a big help.
Hints, one at a time
These hints follow the game's own hints. Open only the next one you need. In the game, Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two.
Hint 1: Look at each piece
Check the pieces one at a time. Something about each piece tells you which plate it belongs to.
Hint 2: Use the flower pattern
Look at the flower pattern on the plates. The pieces come in confusing shapes, but the pattern helps a lot in working out which piece came from which plate.
Hint 3: Plate B is complete
All the pieces of plate B are on the floor.
Super Hint: Plate A is complete too
All the pieces of plate A are on the floor as well. That leaves only one plate.

Step by step:
- Count the pieces. Each plate broke into three pieces, so there should be nine. Only eight are on the floor.
- Rebuild plate A. All three pieces of the five-sided plate are there.
- Rebuild plate B. All three pieces of the square plate are there too.
- That leaves C. Only two pieces of the triangular plate are on the floor. The cat took the third, so the answer is C.
The game's message when you're right says, "It's C. Get after that cat!"
