Miracle Mask Puzzle 047: Trial by Tennis Hints and Answer

Stuck on Puzzle 047, Trial by Tennis? Six players, one half-finished scoreboard and one question: who did E beat? Open the hints one at a time, then the answer. 35 picarats.

Puzzle 047 is Trial by Tennis, a 35-picarat Multiple Choice puzzle from Madame Lapushka in her costume shop in Chapter 3. In the UK English version she's called Ludmilla. Six players have finished a round-robin tennis tournament, but the scoreboard is only half filled in. You know E won exactly one match, and you have to work out which player she beat.

This page covers story Puzzle 047 in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask on Nintendo 3DS, in the US and UK English versions. If you're after Daily Puzzle 047, one of the other puzzles in Madame Lapushka's shop or Puzzle 047 from another Layton game, see Wrong Puzzle 047? below.

Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask Puzzle 047 Trial by Tennis: a wooden scoreboard with WIN, LOSE and DRAW columns for players A to F, with rows A to C filled in, D missing its draws, E showing only 1 win and F blank, watched by players in tennis whites, and on the touch screen the objective bar Who lost to E?, five player heads labelled A, B, C, D and F, and the Hints, Quit and Memo buttons
Illustration of the puzzle on both screens, rebuilt from the game's art. The scoreboard is still missing some results.

The puzzle says: "Six ladies have just finished playing a tennis tournament in a round-robin style (each one played all the others once). The results are still in the process of being drawn up on the board shown here, but you know that only two of the matches ran out of time and ended in draws. Much to her surprise, E managed to win a match despite being a tennis rookie. Can you work out who she defeated?" The objective bar says, "Who lost to E?"

The touch screen shows the heads of the other five players with a letter button by each: A, B, C, D and F. There's no E button, because E is the player you're asking about. Tap a letter to give your answer.

This is what the scoreboard shows when the puzzle starts. A dash means the box is still empty.

Why the board seems to tell you too little

The board only gives totals. It says how many matches each player won, lost and drew, but never who played whom. So it's tempting to think the question can't be answered, or to guess from the rows that look weakest.

The puzzle text gives you two more facts that aren't on the board: everyone played everyone else once, and exactly two matches were draws. The hints below show how to use them.

Puzzle names

The puzzle is called Trial by Tennis in the North American version. The name is the same in the US and UK English versions. The puzzle giver is Madame Lapushka in the US version and Ludmilla in the UK version.

Wrong Puzzle 047?

  • Daily Puzzle 047 is Alchemy 06, from The Alchemist's Lair set.
  • Other puzzles in Madame Lapushka's shop are different puzzles: Puzzle 010, The Place to Be!, which she gives you in Chapter 1, the hidden Puzzle 009, Stamp Stumper, and Puzzle 068, Days of Rest, in Chapter 5.
  • Puzzle 047 in another Layton game is a different puzzle. If yours doesn't show a tennis scoreboard, you're in the wrong game.

Where you get it

In Chapter 3, after you solve Puzzle 046 at Montsarton Gallery, Artie tells you that Madame Lapushka in the merchant district may be able to help, and your objective becomes "Go to Madame Lapushka's!" Go to her shop and talk to her. She greets you with, "You know, darling, it's never too early to start thinking about your next costume party...or your next outfit." When Layton asks about the local police, she says, "Now, now, darling. Information doesn't grow on trees. You need to solve this puzzle first."

If you quit, she says, "No solution, no information. I'm sorry to drive such a hard bargain, but I'm trying to run a business here." Talk to her again and she says, "If you want more information, you'll need to solve this puzzle."

The shop has three hint coins: in the drawer at the bottom left, on the box on top of the shelf and on the candle.

You can't skip this one. The story probably only moves on, to the circus tent, after you solve Trial by Tennis.

When you can't decide

  • You're trying to work out every match. You don't need the full results of the tournament. You only need to find one player whose results leave no doubt.
  • "Too bad! You won't get anywhere just staring at the numbers on the scoreboard!" That's the game's message for a wrong answer. Work out how many matches there were in total, then come back to the board.
  • You're guessing from the losses column. Several players have losses, and a loss alone doesn't say who it was against. Look at the wins and draws instead.

Hints, one at a time

These hints follow the game's own hints. Open only the next one you need. In the game, Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two.

Hint 1: Totals aren't enough

B never lost a match, so she can't be the player E beat. Apart from that, win and loss totals don't tell you who beat whom. Look for something else the board gives away.

Hint 2: Count the matches

Work out how many matches were played in the whole tournament. Every match that isn't a draw gives exactly one win to someone.

Hint 3: Wins, then draws

Compare the number of matches that had a winner with the number of wins already on the board. Then check which players the two draws belong to.

Super Hint: One player's whole row

Once you know how many wins there are in total, you can work out how many wins the empty row has. The draw column tells you how many draws it has. Then ask what happened in every one of that player's matches.

Answer and full solution

The answer below names the player and shows the whole scoreboard. Open it when you're ready.

Show the answer

The answer is F. She lost every one of her matches, so she's the only player who could have lost to E.

Trial by Tennis solved: the finished scoreboard with D 3, 2, 0, E 1, 4, 0 and F 0, 5, 0, with the F row outlined, an older player with an exclamation mark on the left and a player in a green cap sighing on the right, and on the touch screen the F button pressed and circled
Illustration of the finished scoreboard with F chosen.

Step by step:

  1. Count the matches. There are six players and each one plays the other five once. That's 6 × 5 ÷ 2 = 15 matches.
  2. Count the wins. Two matches were draws, so 13 matches had a winner, and there are 13 wins in all.
  3. Add up the wins on the board. A, B, C, D and E have 3 + 4 + 2 + 3 + 1 = 13 wins. That's all of them, so F has no wins.
  4. Find the draws. The draw column shows 1 for A, 1 for B and 2 for C. Each draw counts for both players, so those four entries are the two drawn matches. D, E and F didn't draw.
  5. Finish F's row. F played five matches, won none and drew none, so she lost all five, including her match against E.
A table of won, lost and drawn matches for players A to F: A 3, 1, 1; B 4, 0, 1; C 2, 1, 2; D 3, 2, 0; E 1, 4, 0; F 0, 5, 0 in a highlighted row; with totals of 13 won, 13 lost and 4 = 2 draws
Illustration of the whole tournament with the missing results filled in. Every row adds up to five matches.

You never need to know who E's four losses were against. F is the only player with no wins and no draws, so she's the only one you can be sure lost to E.

The game's message when you're right says, "Correct! F was the one who lost to E. The completed scoreboard tells the whole story: poor F lost all her matches! Don't let it get you down, F! Onward and upward!" The UK version ends with "Onwards and upwards!"

Picarats, hints and hint coins

Trial by Tennis shows 35 picarats when it starts. The puzzle can award 35, 28 or 21 picarats. Wrong answers may reduce the picarat value.

Hints cost hint coins, not picarats. The costs are one coin each for the first three hints and two for the Super Hint, five in total. The three coins in Madame Lapushka's shop aren't enough for all of them on their own.

Does it unlock anything?

Yes. Solving Trial by Tennis adds the fifth aisle to the Shop minigame in the Professor's trunk: Baked Goods. The game announces, "You got a new shop aisle: "Baked Goods"!" Its description says, "The tantalizing smell of treats baking in the oven wafts down our aisle filled with fresh loaves, cakes, and doughnuts."

Versions and systems

  • Nintendo 3DS, 3DS XL, 2DS and New 3DS: no difference. You tap the answer on the touch screen.
  • US and UK English versions: same puzzle name, same scoreboard, same answer. The puzzle giver is Madame Lapushka in the US version and Ludmilla in the UK version, and a few lines of the puzzle text, hints and correct-answer message are worded a little differently.

After the puzzle

When you solve it, Layton asks again about the local police. Madame Lapushka says the people of Monte d'Or have always mistrusted them, "Not because they're corrupt, but because they're...inept." She points out that the "dark miracles" seem to need "quite a bit of flash money," and mentions that some circus performers recently rented a large number of costumes. Emmy asks, "Don't circus performers usually have their own costumes?" and Layton decides, "Let's see what we can find out at the circus tent."

Talk to her again afterwards and she says, "Professor, darling, your mind is brilliant, but your style is a little, well...uninspired. If you ever want a makeover, let me know!"
