Miracle Mask Puzzle 046: Toppings Up! Hints and Answer

Stuck on Puzzle 046, Toppings Up!? Every flip turns the slices next to it too. Open the hints one at a time, then see which slices to flip. 30 picarats.

Puzzle 046 is Toppings Up!, a 30-picarat puzzle from Artie, the director of Montsarton Gallery, in Chapter 3. In the UK English version he's called Beaufort. A clumsy chef has flipped seven of the eight slices of a pizza face down, and every time you flip a slice, the slices on both sides of it flip too. Your job is to get every slice face up.

Video: Toppings Up! solved. It shows the answer, so skip it if you only want the hints.

This page covers story Puzzle 046 in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask on Nintendo 3DS, in the US and UK English versions. If you're after Daily Puzzle 046, a later pizza puzzle or Puzzle 046 from another Layton game, see Wrong Puzzle 046? below.

Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask Puzzle 046 Toppings Up!: a pizza cut into eight slices with only the top-left slice face up and a spatula under the slice from 6 to 7:30, and on the touch screen the objective bar Flip the pizza face up!, a green pizza wheel with a handle and the Hints, Quit, Memo and Restart buttons
Illustration of the puzzle on both screens, rebuilt from the game's art. Only one slice starts face up.

The puzzle says: "A renowned but clumsy chef prepared this mouthwatering margherita pizza and cut it into eight slices. Unfortunately, he somehow managed to flip over all but one of them in the process. He's tried his best to flip the slices back up, but the cheese is spread so thickly that every time he flips one, the adjacent slices turn over with it. Can you find a way to flip the slices so they all face the right way up?" The objective bar says, "Flip the pizza face up!"

The top screen shows the pizza from above, with a spatula under one slice. The touch screen shows a green pizza wheel with a handle on its rim. Slide the stylus around the wheel to move the spatula to the slice you want, then lift the stylus to flip that slice. The two slices next to it flip with it.

The steps on this page name slices by clock positions, as if the pizza were a clock face with 12 at the top. The slice that starts face up is the one from 10:30 to 12.

The starting pizza with clock labels 12, 1:30, 3, 4:30, 6, 7:30, 9 and 10:30 at the eight cuts, and the one face-up slice between 10:30 and 12

Why flipping slice by slice goes wrong

The obvious plan is to flip the face-down slices up a few at a time. But every flip turns over three slices, and some of them are often slices you've already fixed. As the game's first hint puts it, you can get six slices the right way up and still be left with one face down.

It helps to think about how many times each slice gets turned over in total, not just which slices are up right now. The hints below build on that.

Puzzle names

The puzzle is called Toppings Up! in the North American version. The name is the same in the US and UK English versions. Only the puzzle giver's name changes: Artie in the US version, Beaufort in the UK version.

Wrong Puzzle 046?

  • Daily Puzzle 046 is Mural 05, from the Vault of the Ancients set.
  • Toppings Up! 2 and Toppings Up! 3 are later pizza puzzles in the same gallery: Puzzle 069 in Chapter 5 and Puzzle 107 in Chapter 7.
  • Puzzle 046 in another Layton game is a different puzzle. If yours doesn't show a pizza, you're in the wrong game.

Where you get it

In Chapter 3, after the task force meeting, your objective becomes "Go to Montsarton Gallery!" When you get there, Emmy says, "Looks like the museum reopened." Talk to Artie inside. He says, "I'm Artie, the director here. Mayor Billson told me about your work with the task force," and then, "We did find a nice puzzle among the donated paintings here..."

If you quit, Artie says, "You don't like the puzzle? Well, I stand by my opinion--it's a nifty little thing." Talk to him again and he says, "I thought you might change your mind."

Montsarton Gallery has six hint coins. Three are in the main view of the gallery: on the hand of the statue on the left, on the stairs and on the light on the right. The other three only show up when you zoom in on the back of the room: at the top of the left pillar and at two spots in the small-painting area.

The gallery has a second puzzle. Puzzle 045, From Left to Right, is a hidden puzzle in the painting in the middle of the back wall, in the zoomed-in view. It's separate from Artie's pizza.

You can't skip this one. The next objective, "Go to Madame Lapushka's!", and Madame Lapushka's puzzle, Puzzle 047, probably only open up after you solve Toppings Up!

When the pizza won't come out right

  • You have six or seven slices up and can't finish. Each flip from there turns some good slices back over. Tap Restart to start again, and plan the order from the starting pizza.
  • "Too bad. Try not to flip it over too many times, or you'll just end up with a sticky mess." That's the game's message for a wrong result. Start again from the beginning.
  • The spatula is on the wrong slice. The slice that flips is the one the spatula is under when you lift the stylus. Slide around the wheel until the handle on the touch screen points at the slice you want.

Hints, one at a time

These hints follow the game's own hints. Open only the next one you need. In the game, Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two.

Hint 1: Three slices per flip

Every flip turns over three slices: the one you pick and the two next to it. You can't fix the slices one at a time, so plan the flips before you start.

Hint 2: Count the turns for each slice

The slice that starts face up has to end up turned over an even number of times. Each of the other seven slices has to be turned over an odd number of times.

Hint 3: Where to start

Start by flipping a slice next to the face-up one. Either side works. Then look at where the face-down slices are.

Super Hint: The last two flips

After you flip the slice just clockwise of the face-up one, two slices are face up and the six face-down slices are in a row. Split the six into two groups of three and flip the middle slice of each group.

Answer and full solution

The answer below names the slices to flip, in clock positions. Open it when you're ready.

Show the answer

Flip three slices: the slice from 12 to 1:30, the slice from 4:30 to 6 and the slice from 9 to 10:30.

Toppings Up! solved: all eight pizza slices face up with tomato, cheese and a basil leaf on each, the spatula under the slice from 9 to 10:30, and on the touch screen the wheel handle pointing at that slice
Illustration of every slice face up after the last flip.

Step by step:

  1. Flip the slice from 12 to 1:30. It's the slice just to the right of the face-up one. It turns over with the slices from 10:30 to 12 and from 1:30 to 3, so now the two slices from 12 to 3 are face up, and the six slices from 3 all the way round to 12 are face down.
  2. Flip the slice from 4:30 to 6. That turns up the three slices from 3 to 7:30.
  3. Flip the slice from 9 to 10:30. That turns up the last three, from 7:30 to 12. The whole pizza is face up.
Four pictures of the pizza: the spatula under the slice from 12 to 1:30 with only the slice from 10:30 to 12 face up, then under the slice from 4:30 to 6 with the slices from 12 to 3 face up, then under the slice from 9 to 10:30 with the slices from 12 to 7:30 face up, and finally all eight slices face up
Illustration of the pizza before each flip and after the last one, rebuilt from the game's art. The outlined slice is the one to flip next.

The order doesn't matter, and there's only one set of slices that works. Each of these three flips turns over a different group of three slices. Together they turn the seven face-down slices once each and the face-up slice twice, so every slice ends face up. If you start on the slice to the left of the face-up one instead, as the game's Hint 3 allows, you're flipping the same three slices in a different order.

The game's message when you're right says, "Magnifico! You can flip the entire pizza face up in just three moves. How did it work out?"

Picarats, hints and hint coins

Toppings Up! shows 30 picarats when it starts. All three of its picarat values are 30.

Hints cost hint coins, not picarats. The costs are one coin each for the first three hints and two for the Super Hint, five in total. The six coins in Montsarton Gallery are enough to cover all of them, if you find them before you start.

Does it unlock anything?

Yes. Solving it gives you a new play for your rabbit, Little Lost Squirrel. The game announces, "You got a new play for your rabbit: "Little Lost Squirrel"!" Its description says, "A cheery Bunny runs into a baby squirrel who's gotten lost. Can he help her find her way home?"

Versions and systems

  • Nintendo 3DS, 3DS XL, 2DS and New 3DS: no difference. You use the stylus on the touch screen.
  • US and UK English versions: same puzzle name, same pizza, same answer. The puzzle giver is Artie in the US version and Beaufort in the UK version, and the Super Hint is worded a little differently.

After the puzzle

When you solve it, Artie says, "Oh, you really are something else. Detective Bloom said you were a puzzle master." He tells you Mr. Ledore donated replacements for the confiscated paintings, which are in the gallery's warehouse until they're inspected. Then he sends you on: "Madame Lapushka in the merchant district may be able to help you." He adds, "She knows everything about everyone, and she loves to talk."

Talk to him again afterwards and he says, "All of my art-critic friends like to gorge themselves on caviar, but I find that there's nothing like a hot slice of cheese pizza. It tastes even better when you're surrounded by priceless works of art."
