Miracle Mask Puzzle 051: Dandy Bears Hints and Answer

Stuck on Puzzle 051, Dandy Bears? Stumble's grid of dressed-up teddy bears at the One-Ring Circus, with hints one at a time before the answer. 30 picarats.

Puzzle 051 is Dandy Bears, a 30-picarat Multiple Choice puzzle from Stumble (Bungle in the UK version) outside the circus tent at the One-Ring Circus. Nine teddy-bear squares in a three-by-three grid, eight of them dressed up in hats, glasses and ribbons, have one empty square, and you pick which of four bears, A, B, C or D, belongs there.

This page covers story Puzzle 051 in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask on Nintendo 3DS, in the US and UK English versions. If you're after Daily Puzzle 051 or Puzzle 051 from another Layton game, see Wrong Puzzle 051? below.

Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask Puzzle 051 Dandy Bears: a three-by-three grid of brown and white teddy bears in hats, glasses and ribbons with a question mark in the bottom-right square, between a long-haired figure in a cap holding a white teddy bear and a red-haired girl with a bow, and on the touch screen four bear stickers labelled A, B, C and D on an orange diamond background

The puzzle says: "Here's a 3 x 3 grid of some very dapper teddy bears indeed. It looks like they're arranged in a kind of pattern. Which bear fits into the empty square: A, B, C, or D?"

The objective bar says, "Which bear fits?" The grid is on the top screen. On the touch screen there are four bear stickers, each with a letter button under it, and you tap the letter of the one you think fits.

Why it looks hard

All four choices look a lot alike, and each bear wears several things at once, so it's hard to tell which detail matters.

It's also tempting to look for a pattern in every direction at once, including corner to corner. The hints below go one step at a time.

The puzzle is called Dandy Bears in both the North American and UK English versions.

Wrong Puzzle 051?

  • Daily Puzzle 051 is Ghosts 05, from the Ghouls and Guards set.
  • The other puzzle at the One-Ring Circus is Puzzle 038, Pattern Pending, from Puck.
  • Puzzle 051 in another Layton game is a different puzzle. If yours doesn't show a grid of teddy bears with one empty square, you're in the wrong game.

Where you get it

Dandy Bears is at the One-Ring Circus in Monte d'Or, in Chapter 3. The UK version probably calls the place the Stellar Circus. After you solve Puzzle 050 in the Big Top, you step back outside and it's already dark. Emmy says, "Let's get to the Gallery Plaza!" Before you go, talk to Stumble outside the circus tent.

He says, "Oh, it's you guys. Hello! I'm just passing out flyers...again. And still." Then he notices something wrong with the bear stickers on his flyers: "Ack! I lost track of which sticker I'm supposed to put on next!" If you quit, he asks, "Can you help me choose which sticker to use here?"

The One-Ring Circus has four hint coins: by the palm tree on the left, at the ticket booth, on the pink neon sign and on the arch on the right. That's enough for the first three hints, but not for the Super Hint as well.

You don't have to solve it to move on. Stumble probably offers it only until the night's events at Gallery Plaza play out. If you leave Chapter 3 without solving it, it should be sent to Nanna Grams (known as Elizabeth in the UK version) at the start of Chapter 5. Missed puzzles can be picked up later, but not every hidden puzzle is, so it's safest to solve it while you're there.

When no bear seems to fit

  • You followed the diagonal. The game's third hint says, "you can ignore the diagonal." Only rows and columns count.
  • You looked at the fur. The bears alternate brown and white, but all four choices are brown, so fur colour can't tell them apart.
  • You looked at the whole bear at once. Take one accessory at a time: hats first, then glasses, then ribbons.
  • "Too bad." That's the start of the game's wrong-answer message: "It doesn't seem like they follow any kind of pattern, does it? No, there must be some method to the madness here." Try again with the hints below.

Hints, one at a time

These hints follow the game's own hints. Open only the next one you need. In the game, Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two.

Hint 1: Why so fancy?

The bears are dressed up for a reason. Look closely at what each one is wearing.

Hint 2: Three accessories

The bears wear hats, glasses and ribbons, and some wear no glasses at all. There's a pattern in each of the three.

Hint 3: Forget the diagonal

The game's own tip is that you can ignore the diagonal. Read along the rows and down the columns only.

Super Hint: Watch the hats

Along the top row, the hats are a beret, a bowler and a top hat. Down the first column, they're a beret, a top hat and a bowler. No row or column has the same hat twice, and the glasses and ribbons follow the same rule.

Answer and full solution

The answer below covers the right bear and why the other three don't fit, with a picture of the pattern and of the finished grid. Open it when you're ready.

Show the answer

The answer is bear D: a beret, dark round glasses and a green ribbon.

Dandy Bears pattern: three tables for hats, glasses and ribbons with the bottom-right cell filled in as beret, dark and green, the finished bear grid with the new bear in a red frame, and the four stickers A to D, where A has a blue ribbon already in row 3, B has green glasses already in row 3, C has a top hat already in row 3, and D fits every row and column
Illustration of the hats, glasses and ribbons in each square, and the four stickers checked against them, rebuilt from the game's art.

Step by step:

  1. Hats. The bottom row already has a bowler and a top hat, and the right-hand column already has a top hat and a bowler. The missing bear needs a beret.
  2. Glasses. The bottom row has one bear with no glasses and one with green glasses. The right-hand column has the same two. The missing bear needs dark round glasses.
  3. Ribbons. The bottom row has a blue ribbon and an orange one, and so does the right-hand column. The missing bear needs the green ribbon.
  4. Pick the sticker. Only bear D has a beret, dark round glasses and a green ribbon. A has a blue ribbon, B has green glasses and C has a top hat, and each of those is already in the bottom row.
Dandy Bears solved: the bear grid complete with a brown bear in a blue beret, dark round glasses and a green ribbon in the red-framed bottom-right square, the red-haired girl and the figure in the cap smiling on swapped sides, and on the touch screen the D button pressed and the D sticker circled in gold
Illustration of the grid after choosing D.

The game's message when you're right says, "Beary good! The answer is teddy bear D. Those crafty dandies have arranged themselves so that no two bears in the same row or column are wearing the same hat, glasses, or ribbon."

Picarats, hints and hint coins

Dandy Bears shows 30 picarats when it starts. The puzzle can award 30, 23 or 15 picarats. Wrong answers may reduce the picarat value. With four choices, a guess can cost you.

Hints cost hint coins, not picarats. The costs are one coin each for the first three hints and two for the Super Hint, five in total. The four coins at the One-Ring Circus fall one short of that.

Versions and systems

  • Nintendo 3DS, 3DS XL, 2DS and New 3DS: no difference. You tap A, B, C or D with the stylus.
  • US and UK English versions: same grid, same choices, same answer. The giver is Stumble in the US version and Bungle in the UK version, and the UK text presents the grid as part of Bungle's sticker collection: one of the stickers has fallen off, and you choose which bear sticker fits.

After the puzzle

When you solve it, Stumble says, "Phew! That was a close one." He has a plan to make his job easier: "If I could fly like the Masked Gentleman, I could hand out flyers from the sky." Layton isn't convinced: "That seems like an unnecessarily dangerous way to hand out flyers. I recommend sticking to the ground." Stumble agrees, and admits, "I just remembered that I'm scared of flying, anyway." Talk to him again and he's back to work: "You like circus performers! Have a flyer!"
