Puzzle 052 is Spectacular Views, a 40-picarat Arrange puzzle from Gonzales at Dalston Mansion. A diamond, an emerald, a ruby and a sapphire sit on a four-by-four board, and four clues say how they look from the north, east, south and west. You move each jewel to the square the clues point to.
This page covers story Puzzle 052 in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask on Nintendo 3DS, in the US and UK English versions. If you're after Daily Puzzle 052 or Puzzle 052 from another Layton game, see Wrong Puzzle 052? below.

What Puzzle 052 is
| Name | Spectacular Views (the same in the US and UK English versions) |
|---|---|
| Type | Arrange |
| Picarats | 40 |
| Location | Dalston Mansion (probably Château Dalston in the UK version), Monte d'Or |
| Chapter | Chapter 3 |
| Puzzle giver | Gonzales |
| Comes after | Puzzle 051, Dandy Bears |
| Comes before | Puzzle 053, Poke 'Em Totems 2 |
The puzzle says: "There's a special way to arrange these jewels. Can you work it out?" Then come four clues:
- "Viewed from the north, the diamond is to the right of the ruby and the emerald is to the left of the sapphire."
- "From the east, the emerald is to the right of the diamond."
- "From the south, the ruby is to the left of the sapphire."
- "From the west, the sapphire is on the far right, the ruby is on the far left, and two jewels lie between them."
The objective bar says, "Arrange the jewels!" On the touch screen, the four jewels start in the middle four squares of the board, and an arrow marked N at the side shows which way is north. You move the jewels into place and then submit your arrangement.
Why it looks hard
Each clue is told from a different side of the board, so "left" and "right" keep changing meaning. Looking from the north, your right-hand side is west, which is the left of the board as you hold it.
No single clue is enough on its own, either. The hints below show which clues to put together.
Puzzle names
The puzzle is called Spectacular Views in both the North American and UK English versions.
| Version | Puzzle name |
|---|---|
| North America and UK English | Spectacular Views |
| Japanese | 幸せの宝石 (Shiawase no Hōseki, "jewels of happiness") |
| German | Glänzende Ansichten |
| French | Vue sur les pierres |
| Italian | Veduta preziosa |
| Dutch | Briljant perspectief |
Wrong Puzzle 052?
- Daily Puzzle 052 is Alchemy 07, from The Alchemist's Lair set.
- Gonzales's other puzzle is Puzzle 082, Rainbow Repair, also at Dalston Mansion but in Chapter 5.
- Puzzle 052 in another Layton game is a different puzzle. If yours doesn't show a diamond, an emerald, a ruby and a sapphire on a four-by-four board, you're in the wrong game.
Where you get it
Spectacular Views is at Dalston Mansion in Monte d'Or, in Chapter 3. The UK name is probably Château Dalston. It turns up on the same night as Puzzle 051: after you leave the Big Top, Emmy says, "Let's get to the Gallery Plaza!" Before you go, head to Dalston Mansion and talk to Gonzales.
He says, "I'm sorry, but you just missed Mr. Dalston. He left for the plaza. I'd hate for you to leave empty handed, so here is a puzzle I know." If you quit, he says, "You've come all this way. I insist you allow me to entertain you with a puzzle."
Dalston Mansion has four hint coins: in the grass in the middle, on the left chimney, on the small cactus on the right and on the right chimney. That's enough for the first three hints, but not for the Super Hint as well.
You don't have to solve it to move on. Gonzales probably offers it only until the night's events at Gallery Plaza play out. If you leave Chapter 3 without solving it, it should be sent to Nanna Grams (known as Elizabeth in the UK version) at the start of Chapter 5. Missed puzzles can be picked up later, but not every hidden puzzle is, so it's safest to solve it while you're there.
When the jewels won't fit
- You read "right" as east every time. That only works when you look from the south. Looking from the north, your right is west. Looking from the east, your right is north. Looking from the west, your right is south.
- You put two jewels in the same row or column. The clues give a full order from west to east and another from north to south, so each jewel ends up in a row and a column of its own.
- You left a jewel where it started. None of the four jewels starts in its finished square, so every one of them has to move.
- "Too bad." That's the start of the game's wrong-answer message: "There's something amiss about that arrangement. Take another look at the clues and try again." Try again with the hints below.
Hints, one at a time
These hints follow the game's own hints. Open only the next one you need. In the game, Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two.
Hint 1: Which way is north?
North, south, east and west are the top, bottom, right and left of the board. Don't take the clues one view at a time. Combine two views at once.
Hint 2: Start with clues 1 and 3
Clues 1 and 3 are the views from the north and the south. When you look from the north, your right-hand side is west, not east.
Hint 3: West to east
Clue 1 puts the diamond west of the ruby and the emerald east of the sapphire. Clue 3 puts the ruby west of the sapphire. So from west to east the order is diamond, ruby, sapphire, emerald.
Super Hint: North to south
Clue 2 puts the emerald north of the diamond. Clue 4 puts the sapphire furthest south and the ruby furthest north. So from north to south the order is ruby, emerald, diamond, sapphire.
Answer and full solution
The answer below gives the square for each jewel and how the clues lead there, with a picture of the finished board. Open it when you're ready.
Show the answer
The answer, with north at the top: the ruby goes in the top row, second square from the left; the emerald in the second row, far right; the diamond in the third row, far left; and the sapphire in the bottom row, third square from the left.

Step by step:
- Clue 1, from the north. Facing south, your right is west. So the diamond is west of the ruby, and the emerald is east of the sapphire.
- Clue 3, from the south. Facing north, left is west, so the ruby is west of the sapphire. Put together, the order from west to east is diamond, ruby, sapphire, emerald. That gives each jewel its own column.
- Clue 2, from the east. Facing west, your right is north, so the emerald is north of the diamond.
- Clue 4, from the west. Facing east, your right is south, so the sapphire is furthest south and the ruby furthest north. The order from north to south is ruby, emerald, diamond, sapphire, one jewel per row.
- Cross the two orders. Each jewel goes where its column and its row meet: ruby in row 1, column 2; emerald in row 2, column 4; diamond in row 3, column 1; sapphire in row 4, column 3, counting rows from the top and columns from the left.

The game's message when you're right says, "Correct! You need to arrange the jewels as shown. Clues ① and ③ tell you the order of the gems from west to east. Clues ② and ④ tell you the order going from north to south."
Picarats, hints and hint coins
Spectacular Views shows 40 picarats when it starts. The puzzle can award 40, 32 or 24 picarats. Wrong answers may reduce the picarat value.
Hints cost hint coins, not picarats. The costs are one coin each for the first three hints and two for the Super Hint, five in total. The four coins at Dalston Mansion fall one short of that.
Versions and systems
- Nintendo 3DS, 3DS XL, 2DS and New 3DS: no difference. You move the jewels with the stylus.
- US and UK English versions: same board, same clues, same answer. The UK text words a few clues slightly differently, for example "the diamond is right of the ruby", and says "furthest" where the US hints say "farthest".
After the puzzle
When you solve it, Gonzales says, "Well done, sir. Shouldn't you be making your way to the Gallery Plaza?" Layton answers, "My thoughts exactly." Talk to Gonzales again and he asks a favour: "If you see Mr. Dalston, will you try to keep him out of trouble? I'd hate for him to become a victim of the miracle."
FAQ
Where is the answer to Puzzle 052?
It's in the Answer and full solution section above, hidden until you open it. If you only want a push, open the hints one at a time first.
Where is Puzzle 052?
At Dalston Mansion (probably Château Dalston in the UK version) in Monte d'Or, in Chapter 3. Talk to Gonzales on the night you leave the Big Top, before you go to the Gallery Plaza. If you missed him, Nanna Grams should have the puzzle from the start of Chapter 5, but it's safest to solve it while you're there.
Why is "right" west in clue 1?
Clue 1 is the view from the north, so you're looking south across the board. Facing south, your right hand points west. The game's second hint says the same thing.
How many picarats is Puzzle 052 worth?
It shows 40 picarats when it starts. It can also award 32 or 24. Wrong answers may reduce the picarat value.
Is Daily Puzzle 052 the same as Puzzle 052?
No. Daily Puzzle 052 is Alchemy 07, from The Alchemist's Lair set. Story Puzzle 052 is Gonzales's jewel puzzle at Dalston Mansion.
