Miracle Mask Puzzle 114: Emperor's Throne 2 Hints and Answer

Stuck on Puzzle 114 (Emperor's Throne 2)? Collette on Chance Avenue has another iceberg where penguins slide until they hit each other. Open the four hints one at a time and show the answer only when you want it. Slide puzzle, 50 picarats, Chapter 7.

Puzzle 114 is Emperor's Throne 2, a 50-picarat Slide puzzle that Collette gives you on Chance Avenue in Monte d'Or, in Chapter 7. Five small penguins and their emperor stand on a 5 by 5 iceberg again, in a new layout. A penguin you push keeps sliding until it bumps into another penguin, and if nothing stops it, it goes into the sea. Your job is to get the emperor onto the center square.

This page covers story Puzzle 114 in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, the 3DS game (US and UK English). The iceberg and the answer are the same in the US and UK English versions, and the puzzle has the same name in both; quotes use the North American text. If you're after Daily Puzzle 114 or Puzzle 114 from another Layton game, see Wrong Puzzle 114? below.

The puzzle reads: "Atop an iceberg stand five familiar-looking penguins and their large emperor. All penguins can move either horizontally or vertically, but once in motion they won't stop until they hit another penguin. If there's nothing in the way, they'll plunge straight into the sea! Can you work out a way to get the emperor penguin to the very center of the iceberg?" The objective bar says "Enthrone the emperor!"

There's no Submit button. The puzzle ends by itself as soon as the emperor stops on the center square.

How the iceberg works

Count rows from the top and columns from the left. At the start, the small penguins stand in the top-left corner, in the top row in the middle column, on the right edge in the third row, in the fourth row in the second column, and in the bottom row in the fourth column. The emperor is on the left edge in the second row, just under the top-left penguin. The sign on the top screen counts your moves.

  • Pick a penguin and a direction. The game's controls say, "Touch and hold a penguin, then slide the stylus on the Touch Screen in the direction you want the penguin to slide."
  • Straight lines only. Penguins slide up, down, left or right, never diagonally.
  • A sliding penguin stops on the square just before the penguin it hits. It never stops halfway on its own.
  • Nothing in the way means a swim. A penguin with no other penguin in its path slides off the iceberg into the sea. Undo takes the last move back, and Restart puts all six penguins back where they started.

The UK text uses British spelling ("centre") and a few small wording changes, such as "You need only move two penguins." in Hint 1 and "The emperor looks quite chuffed with his little spot on the ice!" when you solve it. The puzzle giver's name changes too: Collette in the US version, Pirouette in the UK version.

Wrong Puzzle 114?

  • Daily Puzzle 114 is Tile Show 04, from the Whose Tile Is It Anyway? set.
  • The other Emperor's Throne puzzles use the same sliding rules on different icebergs: Puzzle 031, Emperor's Throne, from Collette in Carnival Arcade in Chapter 3, and Puzzle 139, Emperor's Throne 3, one of Layton's Challenges. The penguins start in different places, so this page's moves won't work there.
  • Puzzle 113, Chip Champions, is the puzzle before this one, at the Racetrack Entrance. If yours has six gamblers talking about their casino chips, that's the one you've got.
  • Puzzle 115, Slot Sequence 2, is the next puzzle, in the Casino. If yours has a four-digit slot machine, that's the one you've got.
  • Puzzle 114 in another Layton game is a different puzzle. If yours doesn't show penguins on an iceberg, you're in the wrong game.

Where you find it

Chapter 7 opens on the fourth day of the investigation in Monte d'Or. Go to Chance Avenue, the street of big signs that runs toward the arcade with the diamond-patterned roof, and talk to Collette. She stands in the middle of the street, a little to the right, past the two signboards on the left.

Collette says, "Oh, hello!" and Luke asks, "Collette! You don't have to work today?" She answers, "Actually, I'm trying to do some sightseeing and a little PR at the same time!" and adds, "There's so much to see on the main street and so many people already in costume that I don't really stand out, though." Layton says, "So you're like a camouflage billboard." Collette replies, "Yeah. Not very effective. By the way, I found this puzzle earlier. Wanna try?" and the puzzle starts.

Chance Avenue by day in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask: a street lined with shop windows under big unlit neon signs, a clown face and an acrobat on the left, a pig-shaped sign on the right and an arcade with a diamond-patterned roof in the distance. A gold ring with the name plate Collette, Puzzle 114 marks a spot in the middle of the street, and four hint coin spots are numbered 1 on the clown sign, 2 at the foot of the signboards on the left, 3 on the pig sign and 4 on a banner hanging far down the arcade
Illustration of Chance Avenue by day. The gold ring marks where Collette stands, and the numbers mark the four hint coins.

Chance Avenue has four hint coins, all in the normal view: on the clown face sign on the left, at the foot of the two signboards on the left, on the pig-shaped sign on the right, and on the banner hanging far down the arcade.

Each coin can be collected only once, so any you picked up on an earlier visit, for example when you came here for Puzzle 083 in Chapter 5, are already gone.

You don't have to solve it to move on. Collette keeps offering it for the rest of Chapter 7 and after the story ends.

When the emperor won't sit down

  • You moved the emperor first. At the start there's nothing in the middle of the iceberg to stop him on the center square. Put a penguin in place to stop him before he moves. Hint 1 says you need to move only two penguins, and the emperor is the second one.
  • The emperor slides straight over the center. He only stops on the center square if a penguin is waiting on the square just beyond it, in the direction he's sliding.
  • A penguin went into the sea. There was no penguin in its path. Tap Undo to take that move back.
  • You solved it in more than nine moves. That still counts. The game only says you can do it in nine and asks how many it took you.
  • You can't find the puzzle. Talk to Collette on Chance Avenue any time in Chapter 7.

Hints, one at a time

These are the game's own hints, word for word from the North American version and in the same order. Open only the next one you need. In the game, Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two.

Hint 1: how many penguins move

You need to move only two penguins. Which ones look right to you?

Hint 2: the first three moves

Move the penguin in the top-left corner first. Send it sliding right, down, then right again.

If all goes to plan, that puts it on the square three from the top and two from the right.

Hint 3: the next three moves

Now we want to keep moving the penguin from Hint 2. Move it down, left, then up. If it ends up two squares to the right of the emperor penguin, then you're right on track.

Super Hint: the emperor's moves

It's finally time for the emperor to move! Slide him right, down, right, down, and left.

You're only one step away from the goal now!

Answer and full solution

The answer below gives the shortest way, nine moves with three penguins, and the twelve-move way the hints follow. Open it when you're ready.

Show the answer

Answer: slide the top-left penguin right, down and right; then the bottom penguin up, left and up; then the emperor right, down and right. The emperor stops on the center square after nine moves. That's the fewest moves possible, and no other nine-move route works.

Step by step (nine moves):

  1. Top-left penguin right. It stops against the penguin in the middle of the top row.
  2. Same penguin down. It slides down the second column and stops in the third row, against the penguin in the fourth row.
  3. Same penguin right. It slides along the third row, over the center, and stops against the penguin on the right edge.
  4. Bottom penguin up. The penguin in the bottom row slides up and stops in the fourth row, under the penguin you just moved.
  5. Same penguin left. It stops in the middle of the fourth row, against the penguin in the second column.
  6. Same penguin up. It slides up the middle column, over the center, and stops in the second row, under the penguin in the top row.
  7. Emperor right. He slides along the second row and stops against that penguin, in the second column.
  8. Emperor down. He stops in the third row, against the penguin in the fourth row.
  9. Emperor right. He slides one square and stops on the center, against the penguin waiting just to the right of it. Done.

Illustration of the iceberg after each of the nine moves, in order from left to right and top to bottom.

The way the hints go (twelve moves): the hints move only the top-left penguin and the emperor. Slide the top-left penguin right, down and right (Hint 2), then down, left and up (Hint 3). It ends in the second row, two squares to the right of the emperor. Then slide the emperor right, down, right, down and left (Super Hint), and finally up. He stops on the center against that penguin.

The finished puzzle: the move counter on the ice sign reads 0009, and the emperor penguin stands on the center square of the iceberg with the five small penguins around him
Illustration of the emperor on his throne after nine moves.

The game confirms it: "Correct! The emperor looks quite proud of his little place in the ice! You can actually complete this puzzle in nine moves. How many did it take you?"

If it still doesn't work out:

  • The top-left penguin didn't stop in the third row. Slide it right first. From the corner it can't go down, because the emperor stands right under it.
  • The emperor stopped one square short. On the last move a penguin must be on the square just beyond the center. Check that the earlier moves put one there.
  • A penguin fell in. Tap Undo, or Restart and follow the steps from the beginning.

Picarats, hints and hint coins

Emperor's Throne 2 shows 50 picarats when it starts. This puzzle can't be failed. When you talk to Collette again after quitting, she says, "Why was that puzzle just lying in the street?" before the puzzle starts again.

Hints cost hint coins, not picarats. Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two, five in total. The hints on this page are free to open.

What it unlocks

Solving Emperor's Throne 2 adds the ninth aisle to the Shop minigame in the Professor's trunk: Hobby. The game announces, "You got a new shop aisle: "Hobby"!" Its description says, "Model enthusiasts and collectors can't resist our range of remote-controlled land, air, and sea miniatures." Solving it also adds its picarats to your total and counts toward the puzzles you've solved.

Versions

  • Nintendo 3DS family: this page covers the 3DS game. You slide the penguins on the touch screen, and the top screen counts your moves.
  • US and UK English versions: same iceberg, same answer and the same puzzle name. The UK text differs only in spelling and small details of wording.

The scene around the puzzle

If you quit the puzzle, Collette says, "Come back and find me if you ever want to try solving that puzzle."

When it's solved, Collette says, "It's been so long since I had a chance to relax and enjoy walking around town!" Layton answers, "Ah...that sounds wonderful." and Collette adds, "With all of these people around it's odd to think that the Masked Gentleman could be here... I hope this is all resolved soon."
