Before you open a hint

Each player threw exactly four balls. Keep duplicate scores as separate balls, and use both the totals and the clue about A's first two throws.

Hints, one at a time

These are the game's own hints, word for word from the North American version and in the same order. Open only the next one you need. In the game, Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two.

Hint 1

First, you'll need to work out the combination of points needed for the three balls that didn't hit 50.

There should be four possible patterns.

Hint 2

Given that someone scored a 50, there are four possible combinations that can get them up to 62 points:

1. 50, 6, 5, 1 2. 50, 6, 4, 2 3. 50, 5, 5, 2 4. 50, 5, 4, 3

Using these as reference, can you determine who scored the 50?

Hint 3

Think about A's score. He scored 27 with his first two balls, so that means he must have scored a 25 and a 2. That leaves 35 points, so he can only have scored a 30 and a 5 after that. That rules out A.

Super Hint

Following on from Hint 3, we now know that A's combination was 30, 25, 5, 2.

Observe the four patterns in Hint 2 again. We can rule out patterns two and three because we know that A scored the only 2. Which leaves the following: 1. 50, 6, 5, 1 4. 50, 5, 4, 3

Didn't B score a 5 with her last ball?

Answer and full solution

The answer and the worked explanation are hidden below. Open them when you are ready.

Show the answer

Choose B. A's four scores are 30, 25, 5 and 2. The 25 and 2 make the specified 27 points, and the other two bring A's total to 62.

The player who scored 50 needs another 12 points from three balls. The possible groups are 6 + 5 + 1, 6 + 4 + 2, 5 + 5 + 2, or 5 + 4 + 3. A has the only 2-point ball, so the middle two possibilities are unavailable.

Both surviving groups contain a 5. There are only two 5-point balls: A has one, and B is known to have the other. Therefore B must also have the 50-point ball.
