Miracle Mask Puzzle 139: Emperor's Throne 3 Hints and Answer

Stuck on Puzzle 139, Emperor's Throne 3? Slide the penguins on a 5 by 5 iceberg until the big emperor reaches the middle square, without losing anyone into the sea. Open the four hints one at a time and show the six-move answer only when you want it. Layton's Challenges, The Shopkeeper's House, 70 picarats.

Puzzle 139 is Emperor's Throne 3, a 70-picarat Slide puzzle in The Shopkeeper's House, one of Layton's Challenges. Six penguins stand on a 5 by 5 iceberg: five small ones and their big emperor. A penguin you push keeps sliding until it hits another penguin, and if nothing stops it, it falls into the sea. You have to get the emperor onto the middle square.

This page covers bonus Puzzle 139 in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, the 3DS game (US and UK English). The penguins and the answer are the same in the US and UK English versions; quotes use the North American text. If you're after Daily Puzzle 139, the earlier Emperor's Throne puzzles, or Puzzle 139 from another Layton game, see Wrong Puzzle 139? below.

The puzzle reads: "Our six local penguins have turned up on another iceberg, and the big emperor is once again trying to nab the middle spot. All penguins can move either horizontally or vertically, but once in motion they won't stop until they hit another penguin. If there's nothing in the way, they'll plunge straight into the sea! Can you help the emperor find his way into the middle?" The objective bar says, "Enthrone the emperor!"

Count rows from the top and columns from the left. At the start, the small penguins stand in the top row in the second and fifth columns, at both ends of the third row, and at the left end of the fourth row. The emperor is in the bottom row, fourth column. The game's control help says, "Touch and hold a penguin, then slide the stylus on the Touch Screen in the direction you want the penguin to slide." The sign on the top screen counts your moves.

Wrong Puzzle 139?

  • Daily Puzzle 139 is Flight 07, from the Aerial View set.
  • Puzzle 031, Emperor's Throne, is the first one, from Collette in Carnival Arcade in Chapter 3. The rules are the same, but the penguins start in different places.
  • Puzzle 114, Emperor's Throne 2, is the second one, found on Chance Avenue. It's another board with the same rules.
  • Puzzle 141, Fix the Fossil 2, and Puzzle 140, Evenly Matched 4, are the other two puzzles in The Shopkeeper's House.
  • Puzzle 139 in another Layton game is a different puzzle. If yours doesn't show penguins on an iceberg, you're in the wrong game.

Where you find it

Puzzle 139 is one of the fifteen bonus puzzles in Layton's Challenges, which you open from the Bonuses section. The challenges are split into five houses of three puzzles each, and The Shopkeeper's House holds Puzzles 139, 140 and 141. Emperor's Throne 3 is the first puzzle in that house.

The Shopkeeper's House opens when you finish the One-Stop Shop, the shop-shelf minigame in the Professor's trunk. Once every aisle is done, the game tells you, "The Shopkeeper's House has been added to Layton's Challenges." The Miracle Mask minigames page has help with all ten aisles.

Two menu screens side by side: on the left, the Layton's Challenges menu on a wooden board with five house buttons, the second one lit and showing a woman with grey-green hair above the words The Shopkeeper's House, the others as gold silhouettes; on the right, The Shopkeeper's House list with three entries, Puzzle 139: Emperor's Throne 3 marked with a teal box, Puzzle 140: Evenly Matched 4, and Puzzle 141: Fix the Fossil 2, and the words Touch a puzzle to solve it!
Illustration: in Bonuses, then Layton's Challenges, pick The Shopkeeper's House, then Puzzle 139.

When you pick the puzzle, Layton says, "I wonder what this puzzle has in store."

When the emperor won't stop in the middle

  • A penguin slid off the iceberg. With nothing in its way, it plunges into the sea. Touch Restart and try again.
  • The emperor slides past the middle. He needs a penguin right beside the middle square, on the far side from where he comes in, to stop him there.
  • "Too bad." That's the game's whole message for a wrong answer. Try again with the hints below.
  • It took you more than six moves. That still counts. The game only points out that six moves is possible.

Hints, one at a time

These are the game's own hints, word for word from the North American version and in the same order. Open only the next one you need. In the game, Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two.

Hint 1: Three penguins

This time around, you'll have to move three penguins, including the emperor, to succeed.

Any ideas?

Hint 2: The first penguin

The first penguin is on the far left, third square from the top.

Think carefully about where you'll need to move it.

Hint 3: Moving the first penguin

Here's how to move the penguin mentioned in Hint 2:

Slide it right, down, left, then up. Be careful not to slide another penguin by accident in the process!

Super Hint: The second penguin

The next penguin is on the top row, two squares from the left. Move it right, down, left, up, and lastly, right.

All that's left is to move the emperor to the center square. Now that you've come this far, you should be able to work it out!

Answer and full solution

The answer below gives the six-move solution, with a picture of each move, and then the longer route the hints follow. Open it when you're ready.

Show the answer

The answer, in six moves: slide the top-right corner penguin down, the right-hand penguin in the third row left, the top-row penguin in the second column down and then right, and finally the emperor up and then left into the middle.

Emperor's Throne 3 answer in six numbered panels, each showing the iceberg after one move with a yellow line along the path: 1, the top-right corner penguin slides down one square; 2, the right-hand penguin in the third row slides left to the second column; 3, the top-row penguin in the second column slides down one square; 4, the same penguin slides right to the fourth column; 5, the emperor slides up from the bottom row to the third row; 6, the emperor slides left into the middle square, which is lit
Illustration of the six moves in order. The yellow line shows how far each penguin slides.

Step by step:

  1. Top-right corner penguin, down. It stops in the second row, on top of the penguin at the right end of the third row.
  2. Right-hand penguin in the third row, left. It slides across the middle and stops in the second column, next to the penguin at the left end of the row.
  3. Top-row penguin in the second column, down. It stops in the second row, on top of the penguin you just moved.
  4. The same penguin, right. It slides along the second row and stops in the fourth column, next to the penguin from move 1.
  5. Emperor, up. He slides up the fourth column and stops in the third row, under the penguin from move 4.
  6. Emperor, left. He slides one square into the middle and stops there, against the penguin from move 2.
Emperor's Throne 3 solved: on the top screen the move sign reading 0006; on the touch screen the emperor penguin on the lit middle square, with small penguins to his left in the third row, at the left end of the fourth row, and in the second row in the fourth and fifth columns
Illustration of the emperor on his throne after six moves.

The game says, "Correct! Did you know you can solve this puzzle in six moves? Take another crack at it if you haven't managed that yet!"

The route the hints follow (13 moves):

  1. The penguin at the left end of the third row: right (it stops in the fourth column), down (it stops above the emperor), left (it stops in the second column of the fourth row), then up (it stops in the second row, under the top-row penguin).
  2. The top-row penguin in the second column: right (it stops in the fourth column, next to the corner penguin), down (it stops above the emperor), left (it stops in the second column of the fourth row), up (it stops in the third row, under the first penguin), and lastly right (it stops in the fourth column, next to the penguin at the right end of the row).
  3. The emperor: up (he stops in the fourth row), left (he stops in the second column), up (he stops in the third row), then right into the middle, where the penguin in the fourth column stops him.

Picarats, hints and hint coins

Emperor's Throne 3 shows 70 picarats when it starts.

Hints cost hint coins, not picarats. Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two, five in total. Or use the free hints on this page and save your coins.

Does it unlock anything?

No. It doesn't give you an item. You get the picarats, and it counts toward the fifteen Layton's Challenges. Solve all fifteen and the game congratulates you: "Congratulations! You solved all 15 of Layton's Challenges!"

Versions

  • Nintendo 3DS family: this page covers the 3DS game. You slide the penguins with the stylus on the touch screen, and the top screen counts your moves.
  • US and UK English versions: same name, same penguins, same answer. The UK text uses British spellings and words a few lines differently.

Layton's lines

Layton hosts every puzzle in Layton's Challenges. When you start this one, he says, "I wonder what this puzzle has in store." If you quit, he asks, "The answer just keeps slipping away, then?" and when you come back to try again, he says, "Good to see you aren't giving up. Just remember that every puzzle has an answer."

When it's solved, he says, "Excellent work!" Pick it again later and he asks, "Back to solve this one again, eh?"
