Puzzle names

The North American title is Mummies' Revenge!. In Japanese it's ミイラマシン再び!.

Wrong Puzzle 148?

Daily Puzzle 148 is Alchemy 11, from The Alchemist's Lair set. It is separate from Mummies' Revenge!. Puzzle numbers in other Layton games also refer to different puzzles.

Where you find it

Open The Puzzle Keeper's House in Layton's Challenges after solving Puzzles 001–147.

Before you open a hint

The mummies keep moving while you rearrange tiles. Complete one stage and wait for its mummy to fall before beginning the next.

Hints, one at a time

These are the game's own hints, word for word from the North American version and in the same order. Open only the next one you need. In the game, Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two.

Hint 1

There may be three of them this time, but you mustn't lose your cool. Find a safe spot, then work out your strategy.

Hint 2

It's relatively easy to get all three on the same path, but when you get them all together, their movements can become difficult to predict.

Split them off into different paths, then deal with them one by one.

Hint 3

There isn't much else to add. There are several different ways of getting the mummies to fall into the pit. You just need to play it by ear and move the tiles as required in order to deal with them!

If you read the next hint, you might get some more information. Maybe.

Super Hint

Mummification is a special way of preserving the bodies of the dead so that, according to ancient beliefs, they can go to the afterlife looking the same as they did when they were alive.

But then why would you make a mechanical mummy?

Answer and full solution

The answer and the worked explanation are hidden below. Open them when you are ready.

Show the answer

Use the three movement sequences below, waiting for one mummy to fall after each sequence. Directions refer to Hershel's movement, not the direction a tile slides. Start from Restart and make each move promptly after the previous slide finishes.

Stage 1: Down, Right, Right, Up, Right, Up, Left, Down, Right, Up, Left, Down, Down, Left, Up, Left, Down, Down.

Begin while the mummy that started on the far left is in the left half of the board. After the sequence, stay in place until that mummy falls into the pit.

Stage 2: Left, Left, Up, Right, Down, Left, Up, Right, Right, Down, Left, Up, Right, Down, Left, Up, Up, Right, Down, Down.

Wait for the second mummy to fall. This wait can be longer because the remaining mummies can meet and reverse direction.

Stage 3: Up, Right, Up, Left. Wait for the last mummy to reach the pit.

The pit accepts a mummy from the tile directly above it. If a tile is occupied, or you pause while carrying out a sequence and the positions no longer match, restart before following these steps again. This is one workable route; the timing of moving mummies allows other solutions.
