Miracle Mask Puzzle 147: That Rings a Bell 2 Hints and Answer

Stuck on Puzzle 147, That Rings a Bell 2? Six slingshots, five shots and six things in the way of the bell. Open the four hints one at a time and show the answer only when you want it. Layton's Challenges, The Reunion House, 50 picarats.

Puzzle 147 is That Rings a Bell 2, a 50-picarat slingshot puzzle in The Reunion House, one of Layton's Challenges. A little bell hangs under a window, and two flowerpots, two cat ornaments and two bricks sit on the ledges around it. Six slingshots sit on the touch screen, but you only have five shots. You decide which slingshots fire, and in what order, so that the last shot rings the bell.

This page covers bonus Puzzle 147 in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, the 3DS game (US and UK English). The slingshots and the answer are the same in the US and UK English versions; quotes use the North American text. If you're after Daily Puzzle 147, the first That Rings a Bell, or Puzzle 147 from another Layton game, see Wrong Puzzle 147? below.

The puzzle reads: "Ring the bell, and call the people out from the room. You have six slingshots and five shots. The shots will bounce off walls once, and any obstructions they hit will break and disappear. If you get it right, the bell will ring!" The objective bar says "Ring the bell!"

It works like Puzzle 027, That Rings a Bell, with more slingshots and more in the way. You don't aim anything. The six slingshots are fixed in place, each pointing its own way. Five stones numbered 1 to 5 wait on the grass. Drag a stone onto a slingshot, and the numbers set the firing order: stone 1 goes first. One slingshot stays empty. Once all five stones are placed, touch Submit and watch the shots fly.

A shot can touch two things. The first thing it hits sends it off in a new direction, and the second thing it hits stops it. The brick pillars at the sides and the ledges count as walls. The flowerpots, the cats and the bricks break when a shot hits them, and they stay gone for every later shot. So the order matters: a shot that would reach the bell gets stopped by anything still standing in its way.

This page labels the slingshots A to F from left to right, so A is the leftmost and F the rightmost. The game's hints count from the ends instead: "the rightmost slingshot" is F, "the third slingshot from the left" is C, and "the third slingshot from the right" is D.

Wrong Puzzle 147?

  • Daily Puzzle 147 is Sailing 10, from the Perilous Voyage set.
  • Puzzle 027, That Rings a Bell, is the first slingshot puzzle, in the Chapter 2 story. It has four slingshots and three obstructions, and it's worth 40 picarats.
  • Puzzle 146, Tilt to Traverse 2, is the puzzle before this one, also in The Reunion House.
  • Puzzle 148, Mummies' Revenge!, is the next puzzle, the first one in The Puzzle Keeper's House.
  • Puzzle 147 in another Layton game is a different puzzle. If yours doesn't have six slingshots and a bell, you're in the wrong game.

Where you find it

Puzzle 147 is one of the fifteen bonus puzzles in Layton's Challenges, which you open from the Bonuses section. The challenges are split into five houses of three puzzles each, and The Reunion House holds Puzzles 145, 146 and 147. That Rings a Bell 2 is the third and last puzzle in that house.

The Reunion House opens once you've finished the story. You don't need to find anything else first.

When the bell won't ring

  • You're counting the obstructions. There are six, but you only need to clear five. One of them never gets in the way of the last shot.
  • You're one shot short. Five shots for five obstructions plus the bell doesn't add up, so one shot has to break two things. Hint 1 says so.
  • You don't know which slingshot the hints mean. Count from the end the hint names. "The third slingshot from the left" and "the third slingshot from the right" are different slingshots.
  • A shot stops early. Something it should have reached is still standing. Look at which obstruction caught it and clear that one with an earlier stone.
  • The order looks right but it fails. The stone numbers set the order, not the order you place them in.

Hints, one at a time

These are the game's own hints, word for word from the North American version and in the same order. Open only the next one you need. In the game, Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two.

Hint 1

There are six obstructions, and you'll have to get rid of five of them if you want to ring the bell.

You need one shot to ring the bell, so two of the obstructions will have to be taken out with one shot.

Hint 2

Set the rightmost slingshot to fire first, getting rid of the lower cat ornament.

The fifth shot will bounce off a wall and hit the bell, so you need to use one of the second, third, or fourth shots to take out two obstructions in one try.

Hint 3

You don't need to use the third slingshot from the right.

Set the five shots in the other slingshots.

Super Hint

Your second shot should be set in the third slingshot from the left, which will break the right-hand brick.

Your third shot goes in the second slingshot from the left. This will take out the lower flowerpot.

Shots four and five are up to you!

Answer and full solution

The answer below covers every shot, with a picture of the solved puzzle. Open it when you're ready.

Show the answer

The answer: stone 1 on F, stone 2 on C, stone 3 on B, stone 4 on E and stone 5 on A. Leave D empty. That's the rightmost slingshot first, then the third from the left, the second from the left, the second from the right and the leftmost. Touch Submit, and the fifth shot rings the bell. The game says, "Well done! Randall and Henry were playing together in the room. How nice!"

That Rings a Bell 2 solved: five colored shot paths numbered 1 to 5 from slingshots F, C, B, E and A, breaking the lower cat, the right brick, the lower flowerpot, the left brick and the upper cat, with the fifth path bouncing off the right pillar into the bell; the upper flowerpot is still standing
Illustration of the five shots in order and where each one goes. Faded obstructions are the ones that break.

Shot by shot:

  1. Shot 1, slingshot F. It fires up and to the right, bounces off the right-hand edge of the screen and comes back up into the lower cat. The cat breaks.
  2. Shot 2, slingshot C. It flies up to the right and breaks the right brick, then bounces back and stops against the ledge under the upper cat.
  3. Shot 3, slingshot B. It fires almost straight up into the lower flowerpot and breaks it, then stops under the ledge that holds the upper flowerpot.
  4. Shot 4, slingshot E. It flies up to the left across the wall and breaks the left brick, then bounces back up to the right and breaks the upper cat. That's the shot that takes out two obstructions.
  5. Shot 5, slingshot A. It flies up to the right all the way to the right-hand pillar, bounces off it and heads up to the left, into the bell. The bell rings.

The upper flowerpot is never hit. It sits to the left of the bell, away from every path, so it's the one obstruction you can leave standing. Slingshot D, the third from the right, stays empty, as Hint 3 says.

If the bell still won't ring:

  • Check slingshots C and D. C is the third from the left, and D is the one just right of it. Stone 2 goes on C.
  • Check stones 4 and 5. Slingshot E has to fire before A. If A fires earlier, its shot bounces off the right-hand pillar into the upper cat instead of the bell.
  • Check that D is empty. All five stones go on A, B, C, E and F.

Picarats, hints and hint coins

That Rings a Bell 2 shows 50 picarats when it starts. A wrong order gets "Try again."

Hints cost hint coins, not picarats. Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two, five in total. There are no hint coins to find in Layton's Challenges, so you'll spend coins saved from the story, or you can use the free hints on this page.

Does it unlock anything?

No. It doesn't give you an item. You get the picarats, and it counts toward the fifteen Layton's Challenges. Solve all fifteen and the game congratulates you: "Congratulations! You solved all 15 of Layton's Challenges!"

Versions

  • Nintendo 3DS family: this page covers the 3DS game. The wall and the bell appear on the top screen, and you drag the stones onto the slingshots on the touch screen.
  • US and UK English versions: the slingshots and the answer are the same. The UK puzzle text and Hint 2 are worded a little differently.

The scene around the puzzle

There's no story scene for the bonus puzzles. The top screen shows the yellow wall under the window from the first That Rings a Bell, now with six obstructions on its ledges, and the touch screen shows the six slingshots in front of the ivy. When the bell rings, the game's closing line says that "Randall and Henry were playing together in the room."
