Yes, the Magearna QR code still works in Pokémon Sun and Moon. First become Champion. Then open the QR Scanner from the X menu, hold the R Button and scan the event code for your 3DS region. Collect Magearna from the deliveryman at Antiquities of the Ages, upstairs in the Hau'oli City Shopping Mall. The code has no end date. The QR code itself unlocks the gift, so nothing goes through the online services that shut down in April 2024. You get a level 50 Magearna in a Cherish Ball, holding a Bottle Cap. It is never shiny.
This page covers retail Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, versions 1.0 to 1.2, on any 3DS or 2DS with a working outer camera. Both versions work the same way. The same codes also work in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. This is not the Original Color Magearna from Pokémon HOME, and it is not a Mystery Gift serial code.
The Magearna QR code still works after you become Champion
What you do, in order
- Finish the Pokémon League on Mount Lanakila and become Champion. Before that, the scanner refuses the code.
- Open the X menu and choose QR Scanner, then choose QR Code Scan.
- Hold the R Button and line up the event code for your region inside the square. A phone or computer screen works fine.
- Read the message. It should say that a special gift has been delivered.
- Fly to Melemele Island and go to the Hau'oli City Shopping Mall in the Shopping District.
- Go up the stairs to the shop on the right, Antiquities of the Ages. Talk to the deliveryman standing there.
- Save once Magearna is in your party or a Box.
The Pokémon Company said in December 2016 that the code would keep working indefinitely, and no end date has been announced since. Nothing is downloaded, so the 2024 shutdown of 3DS online services didn't stop it.
Sun, Moon and the Ultra pair
Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon read the code the same way and give the same Magearna. No update changes it. Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon accept the same five patterns and send you to the same shop. If you own both pairs, each save can get its own Magearna.
Pick the QR code for your 3DS region
There are five Magearna event codes, one per region, and each works only on games from that region. The game checks your system's region. On a normal 3DS, that is the same region as your cartridge. If you are not sure, look at where you bought the system.
America, Europe, Japan, Korea and Taiwan

The "PAL" code doesn't cover South America or most of Asia. Japan, Korea and Taiwan each have their own code, and South American games use the American one.
Why the Magearna QR code won't scan
The message after the scan tells you what happened. Here is what each message means.
- …A special gift has been delivered! Please receive it from the deliveryman in the select antique shop, Antiquities of the Ages, located in the Shopping District in Hau’oli City.
It worked. Go to the shop. If Magearna wasn't in your Pokédex yet, the message also says your Pokédex was updated. - This QR Code cannot be scanned until you become a Champion.
Right code, too early. Finish the League first. - This QR Code cannot be scanned with this system.
The code is for a different region. Use the one for your system. - This QR Code cannot be scanned with Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon.
The code is for another game, such as the Partner Cap Pikachu code that only Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon accept. - It’s information about a Pokémon that lives in Alola! Your Pokédex information has been updated!
You scanned a Pokédex code, not the event code. No gift is sent. - You can’t scan QR Code patterns because you currently don’t have any scans remaining.
The scanner is out of scans. Wait for it to recharge.
"Cannot be scanned with this system"
In December 2016, many European and Australian players saw this message after scanning the American code, because it came out a day before the PAL code. The fix is simply the right code from the image above. A rejected scan changes nothing, so you can try again right away.
"Until you become a Champion"
You get the title by winning the final battle at the Pokémon League. Beating the Elite Four alone isn't enough. If you aren't there yet, the walkthrough covers the League. Once you're Champion, scan the same code again. Earlier refusals don't count against you.
No scans remaining, and a changed clock
The QR Scanner holds up to 10 scans and recharges one every two hours. If the bar is empty, wait for a scan to come back. Changing the 3DS date or time empties the bar and pauses the recharge for a while. The Island Scan guide explains how to recover. The Magearna scan isn't part of Island Scan, but it uses the same scanner.
The deliveryman isn't in the antique shop
Sometimes you scan a Magearna code, Magearna shows up in your Pokédex, and Antiquities of the Ages has nobody new in it. Check three things, in this order.
You scanned the Pokédex QR
Some images shared as "Magearna QR codes" only register Magearna in the Pokédex. Mythical Pokémon don't get a shareable QR code on the game's own Pokédex pages, so these come from other sources. A code like that makes the game say your Pokédex was updated, and that's all. It doesn't mention a special gift or the deliveryman. Scan the event code for your region from the image above instead.
If the game then says This QR Code has already been scanned!, that pattern is already on the scanner's list. The list clears when you use Island Scan. The real event code is a different pattern, so it isn't blocked.
"New stock" isn't Magearna
After the story, the shop staff say they have new stock and point you to the owner. That's the shop's Orbs and Plates for sale. It happens whether or not you scanned anything. Magearna comes from a separate deliveryman who stands in the shop only after a successful event scan.
The event scan never set the gift
If you didn't see the special gift message, nothing was sent. Scan the event code again. If you did see it, check that you saved afterward, because turning the game off before saving loses the delivery. Also check whether this save already has Magearna in the party or a Box. The deliveryman only comes once per save.
Where to pick up Magearna in Hau'oli City
Antiquities of the Ages is inside the Hau'oli City Shopping Mall, in the Shopping District on Melemele Island. Enter the mall and take either staircase to the upper floor. The antique shop is the brown stall on the far right, with paintings, vases and a wooden counter.
The deliveryman says he nearly took the parcel to the wrong place because it was labeled as an antique. Then he asks your name and hands Magearna over. If your party is full, Magearna goes to a Box. If your party and every Box are full, he asks you to make room and come back. He waits until you do.

All four moves are on Magearna's level-up list, so the Move Reminder can teach any of them back if you replace one. The Bottle Cap can be used for Hyper Training once Magearna reaches level 100. It raises one stat to the same strength as an IV of 31.
Nature resets and Synchronize
The nature is rolled when the deliveryman gives you Magearna, not when you scan. To pick a nature, save in the shop before talking to him, then soft reset until you get the one you want. A Pokémon with Synchronize in the first party slot makes the gift always share its nature, so you can skip the resets.
Not shiny, and not Original Color
This Magearna can never be shiny.
The red and gold Original Color Magearna is a separate form. Sun and Moon never gave it out. It first became available in 2020 as a reward in Pokémon HOME.
Pokédex, Shiny Charm and moving it on
Magearna has slot #301 in the Alola Pokédex, but it isn't needed for the Shiny Charm. Marshadow isn't needed either. The Pokédex completion guide explains which entries count, and the full Pokédex list shows the slot. A Pokédex-only scan just marks Magearna as seen.
Once you have it, you can trade Magearna to a nearby 3DS with local wireless. Online trading, including the GTS and Wonder Trade, stopped when 3DS online services shut down in April 2024. Each save file gets its own Magearna from its own scan.
Where the codes came from
Old dates get copied around as if they were deadlines. They aren't.
- Japan: from 16 July to 30 September 2016, a Pokémon Ga-Olé disc with the code was handed out at the movie, before the games came out. That's when the picture was given out. It isn't an end date.
- America: The Pokémon Company posted the code on 5 December 2016. Early reports gave an end date of 5 March 2017. The official post then said the code would keep working indefinitely.
- Europe and Australia: the PAL code was shown on Pokémon TV a day or two later, at the end of the movie Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel.
- Korea and Taiwan: the codes were handed out at cinemas and events from November 2016 to January 2017.
The official list of past distributions files Magearna under 2016 and says those Pokémon are no longer available. That line is about events in general. The QR code is still accepted.
