X and Y Hairstyles: Coiffure Clips Prices, Unlocks, Male vs Female

Coiffure Clips on South Boulevard changes XY hair. Prices, male vs female cuts, style-50 unlocks, and why this is not the Z-A salon.

In Pokémon X and Y you change your Trainer’s hair at Coiffure Clips on South Boulevard in Lumiose City, and the salon is open from your first visit. A full cut costs $1,500, a color costs $2,000, and both together cost $3,000. Female Trainers can also restyle just the front (sideswept or bangs) for $500, or $2,500 with a color. There are five colors: Blond, Orange, Honey, Brown and Black. Male Trainers get Very short, Short and Medium; female Trainers get Short, Bobbed, Medium and Long. Once your hidden Lumiose style reaches 50, the stylist adds the Medium perm for boys and the Ponytail and Pigtails for girls. Pokémon X and Pokémon Y have the same salon, menus and prices.

Where Coiffure Clips is

Coiffure Clips is on South Boulevard, the ring road around the southern half of Lumiose City. You arrive on this road from Route 4, and the Pokémon Lab, the PR Video Studio and the salon are all on it. You don’t need to fix the blackout first: South Boulevard is open on your first visit. If the stretch by the Route 5 gate is still blocked off, go meet Professor Sycamore at his lab first; that opens it.

The salon sits near Café Soleil, opposite the Route 5 gate. Look for the black awning. If you get lost, the South Boulevard map shows the whole road.

  1. Enter Lumiose City from Route 4 and follow South Boulevard.
  2. Find the Route 5 gate and cross to the other side of the road.
  3. Go in the door with the black awning, near Café Soleil.
  4. Talk to the stylist, pick a service, agree to the price, and choose your cut and color.

This is the only hair salon in X and Y

Boutique fitting rooms and the dressing room in your house only change clothes. No other town has a hair salon. If you wear a hat, the stylist takes it and stows it for the appointment.

What it costs

The stylist first asks what you want: Styling and color, Styling or Color. Female Trainers who choose a styling service are then asked All over or Just the front. She quotes the price before she starts. If you don’t have enough money, she says so and nothing happens.

Prices never change. They are the same on your first visit and after the Hall of Fame, and your style score doesn’t make them cheaper. Each paid visit also raises your hidden style by 2 (see how to unlock the extra cuts).

Female hairstyles

A female Trainer starts with four lengths: Short, Bobbed, Medium and Long. When you choose a full styling, the stylist also asks how to do the front. You can pick Sideswept or Bangs for every length, which gives eight looks before any unlock. At style 50, the length menu adds Ponytail and Pigtails, each with the same two fronts.

Bangs or sideswept for $500

If you only want to change the front, choose Styling and then Just the front. The stylist keeps your length and asks for Sideswept or Bangs. It costs $500, or $2,500 if you add a color. Choosing the front you already have is allowed, but she warns you that you won’t look very different.

Male hairstyles

Male Trainers get fewer choices. The length menu starts with Very short, Short and Medium. There is no front option for boys: the salon never offers Just the front. Every male restyle is a full cut for $1,500.

The Medium perm is the missing fourth cut

The Medium perm is the wavy cut that isn’t on the menu at first. It appears as the fourth choice once your style reaches 50. Ponytail, Pigtails and Long are female only in X and Y, so a male Trainer tops out at four cuts.

How to unlock the extra cuts

Lumiose City keeps a hidden style score from 0 to 255. You never see the number. It goes up when you pay at certain Lumiose shops and do certain things in the city. At 50, the stylist starts offering the extra cuts. It doesn’t matter what you are wearing, how many badges you have or whether you have beaten the Elite Four.

The line to look for

When the extra cuts are unlocked, the question about your cut changes. Instead of a plain “What kind of style would you like?”, the stylist says:

“Oh! I have special styles that suit you perfectly. What kind of style would you like?”

Her stories about a strange man and “some power,” her café tips and her Furfrou talk are just chat. They don’t mean anything new is on the menu.

How to reach style 50

How much a payment adds depends on the shop. Coiffure Clips, the Poké Ball Boutique and the Stone Emporium add 2 per payment, the Herboriste adds 1, and Boutique Couture adds 3. At +2 a time, about 25 single payments take a new save to 50. Buying many items in one payment counts only once, so always pay for one thing at a time.

  • After the blackout: buy one Premier Ball ($200) at the Poké Ball Boutique on Autumnal Avenue, pay, and repeat. 25 single purchases cost $5,000. This is the same trick that opens Boutique Couture at style 25. Once you reach the Boutique threshold of 25, at most 13 more separate purchases get you to 50, since each one adds 2.
  • Before the blackout is fixed: Autumnal Avenue is closed, so use what’s open. A female Trainer’s $500 front-only restyle adds style just like a full cut, and so does a $500 Furfrou trim at Friseur Furfrou. Stones at the Stone Emporium and meals at Restaurant Le Nah also count.
  • Haircuts alone: it works, but 25 full cuts cost $37,500. Front-only restyles cost $12,500 for the same result.

To check where you are without a meter, ask the Mega Stone seller in the Stone Emporium for his price once he is selling a Kanto starter’s stone. A quote of $150,000 or less means you are at 50 or higher. The full price ladder is on the Mega Stones page.

What doesn’t unlock them

  • “Surprise me!” just lets the stylist pick for you. Rolling it again and again doesn’t unlock anything.
  • Matching outfits. The stylist sometimes comments on your coordination. That is flavor text, not the unlock.
  • The Hall of Fame. Becoming Champion gives you a new greeting, not new cuts. If you shop a lot, you can reach 50 well before the Elite Four.
  • Spending a lot at once. Style counts payments, not money. One $30,000 shopping trip adds the same as one $200 Premier Ball.

Hair colors

Both male and female Trainers get the same five colors. From lightest to darkest they are Blond, Orange, Honey, Brown and Black. The color menu also has three shortcuts: Something lighter, Something darker and Same as now. A color on its own costs $2,000, and adding one to a cut costs $1,500 more than the cut alone ($2,000 more with a front-only restyle).

Changing your starting color, or going back to it

The hair color you picked when you made your character isn’t locked. You can change it here any time. To get your original look back, choose the cut you started with and the color you picked at the start. Your skin tone and gender can’t be changed after the intro; only a new save does that. Eye color isn’t handled here either. The PR Video Studio gives you a Lens Case of colored contact lenses, and you change your eye color with them in a changing room.

Not this salon: Friseur Furfrou and Legends: Z-A

Two other things share search results with Coiffure Clips. Friseur Furfrou, on Vernal Avenue near the Stone Emporium, trims Furfrou, not people. It costs $500 and adds new trims as your style rises. The Coiffure Clips stylist even brings up the Furfrou grooming salon in her small talk.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A also has a salon called Coiffure Clips in Lumiose, but it works differently. Z-A has several salons, a visit costs $3,000, and extra cuts and colors come from side missions instead of a style score. Its options are also unisex: every character can use every cut, so nothing is split by gender. If a list mentions balayage, braids or side missions, it is about Z-A.

Quick fixes

  • The front option never shows up. You are playing a male Trainer. Boys only get full cuts.
  • I can’t afford it. Color is the most expensive part. A cut alone is $1,500, and a girl’s front-only restyle is $500.
  • Still no special styles after lots of haircuts. You probably bought big orders in single payments elsewhere, or you aren’t at 50 yet. Check with the Mega Stone price and keep paying for one item at a time.
