You get your first Mega Stone from Professor Sycamore in Lumiose City, together with your Kanto starter, but you can’t use it until you have the Mega Ring. The Ring comes at the Tower of Mastery in Shalour City, along with a Lucario already holding Lucarionite, so that’s your first Mega Evolution. More stones come from people during the story and after it. Most of the rest are hidden: after the Hall of Fame, complete at least one battle at the Battle Maison in Kiloude City, beat your rival there, then touch the Anistar City sundial with Professor Sycamore. From then on, 11 hidden spots show a sparkle on the ground, but only from 8:00 to 8:59 PM on your 3DS clock. Mewtwonite is separate: you get it automatically in the scene right after you catch Mewtwo. One cartridge can get 22 of the game’s 30 Mega Stones. Five belong to the other version, and Blazikenite, Latiasite and Latiosite can only be traded in.

This guide covers Pokémon X and Pokémon Y on Nintendo 3DS and 2DS, up to the final update 1.5. None of the updates moved or added a Mega Stone. Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire have many more stones on a different map, and Pokémon Legends: Z-A has its own Lumiose City with a different Stone Emporium, and neither matches the 3DS games.
Why your Mega Stone isn’t there
A missing stone almost always comes down to one of four things, and the game doesn’t remind you about the first two.

1. Your Mega Ring isn’t upgraded yet
Eleven spots in Kalos hide a Mega Stone, and none of them appear until the Mega Ring is upgraded. Beating Diantha isn’t enough. After the Hall of Fame you have to complete at least one battle at the Battle Maison in Kiloude City, beat your rival (Serena or Calem) there, and only then go to the sundial in Anistar City, where Professor Sycamore does the upgrade. If you went straight to Anistar after the credits, Sycamore won’t be there. The full steps are below.
2. It isn’t 8 PM on the 3DS clock
Sycamore explains it at the sundial: it starts glowing at 8 PM and keeps going for one hour, and the upgraded Mega Ring only reacts to buried Mega Stones while it glows. In practice, that means the hidden stones can be picked up from 8:00 to 8:59 PM. At 9:00 they’re gone until the next evening.
The game reads the 3DS system clock (the one on the HOME Menu), not the in-game sky. “Night” doesn’t help here: night for things like evolving Umbreon runs from 8 PM to 3:59 AM, but the Mega Stones only show during the first hour of it. If you’re walking around at 11 PM wondering why the sky is dark and there’s nothing on the ground, this is why.
3. You’re looking for a Poké Ball
Hidden Mega Stones aren’t item balls. They show up as a small purple-white sparkle on the ground, easy to mistake for a light effect, especially in grass. Walk onto it and press A.
4. That stone belongs to the other version
Three of the hidden spots give a different stone depending on your game: Santalune Forest, Route 16 and the Cyllage City Gym. Catching Mewtwo gives you Mewtwonite X in Pokémon X and Mewtwonite Y in Pokémon Y, and Sycamore and the Stone Emporium only hand out your version’s Charizardite. In Pokémon X, for example, the Santalune Forest spot gives Pinsirite, not Heracronite.
Your first Mega Evolution: the Mega Ring and Lucarionite
Mega Evolution needs two things: the Mega Ring for you and the right Mega Stone held by the Pokémon. You get both in Shalour City. After you beat Korrina for the Rumble Badge, head back to the Tower of Mastery and climb to the top. Korrina hands you the Mega Ring there, battles you with Mega Lucario, and then gives you a Lucario of your own. It’s Lv. 32 and already holds Lucarionite, so you can Mega Evolve right away.
That Lucario is a gift, not a trade, so it obeys you normally. Lucarionite is the only Mega Stone that comes attached to a Pokémon this way during the story. Your Kanto starter’s stone came earlier, but your starter has to be fully evolved before it can use it.
Mega Stones you can get before the Elite Four
None of these need the upgrade or the 8 PM hour, and all of them are available during the main story:

| Mega Stone | Where | How |
|---|---|---|
| Lucarionite | Tower of Mastery, Shalour City | Held by the Lucario Korrina gives you after the Mega Ring |
| Venusaurite, Charizardite X or Y, or Blastoisinite | Professor Sycamore’s lab, Lumiose City | Given with your Kanto starter, matching the one you pick |
| Aerodactylite | Fossil Lab, Ambrette Town | After you meet the lab’s scientist in Glittering Cave |
| Ampharosite | Azure Bay | Surf to the island in Azure Bay and talk to the old man near the photo spot |
| Gengarite | Laverre City | A Hex Maniac; you need Gastly, Haunter or Gengar seen in your Pokédex |
| Abomasite | Frost Cavern | Talk to the Abomasnow after you beat the Team Flare grunts there |
| One of your other two Kanto stones | Stone Emporium, Lumiose City | Bought from the man on the shop floor (not the cashier) |
Sycamore’s stone is easy to forget: you get it so early, before the Mega Ring, that it sits in your bag for half the game. Look under Items. It only works once your Bulbasaur, Charmander or Squirtle is fully evolved.
After the Hall of Fame: Kiloude, Absolite and the Anistar sundial
It’s easy to miss, so do it in this order:
- Enter the Hall of Fame: beat Diantha and watch the credits.
- Go to Kiloude City. After the Hall of Fame, your mom tells you Professor Sycamore is waiting at Lumiose Station; go there and talk to him to get the TMV Pass, then ride the TMV to Kiloude (how to get to Kiloude City).
- Complete at least one battle at the Battle Maison. That’s what makes your rival appear.
- Battle your rival: Serena or Calem waits by the pond in the north of Kiloude. Win, and you get Absolite (“I found two Absolite!”) plus a message: Sycamore is waiting at the sundial in Anistar City.
- Go to the sundial in Anistar City, where Sycamore is waiting. He talks about Mega Stones and the sundial, then asks you to touch it. The sundial, plus the energy you absorbed in Team Flare’s HQ, upgrades your Mega Ring.
- Hunt the sparkles. From now on, every evening from 8:00 to 8:59 PM, the 11 hidden spots below show a sparkle.

You don’t have to change your 3DS clock. Waiting until a real 8 PM works fine.

The 11 hidden spots, plus Mewtwo’s cave
Each map below is seen from above, with the stone marked. The first 11 follow the same rule: upgraded Mega Ring, 8:00 to 8:59 PM. Mewtwonite doesn’t: you get it automatically in the scene that plays right after you catch Mewtwo.

- Santalune Forest (Pinsirite in X, Heracronite in Y): in the grass near the Route 2 end of the forest.
- Reflection Cave (Alakazite): on the lowest floor. Enter from Shalour City.
- Glittering Cave (Kangaskhanite): take the first path to the right and follow it to the dead end.
- Cyllage City Gym (Tyranitarite in X, Aggronite in Y): climb the first wall, then the right-hand wall, to a dead end. The Gym is open after you’ve beaten Grant.
- Shabboneau Castle (Mawilite): second floor, north of the western stairs. The castle is in Camphrier Town.
- Couriway Town (Gyaradosite): on the southeast side of town, go up the stairs near the inn and look for the sparkle in front of the small waterfalls.
- Laverre City (Medichamite): in front of the well near the Gym.
- Route 16 (Manectite in X, Houndoominite in Y): on the south side of the rock that the two Roller Skaters circle.
- Frost Cavern (Scizorite): behind where the Abomasnow stood. This is a separate stone from Abomasite.
- Chamber of Emptiness (Banettite): near the Victory Road entrance on Route 22, head south to the water, Surf and go down the waterfall, land on the east side and enter the Chamber of Emptiness. The stone is at the back of the chamber, and like the others it needs the upgraded Mega Ring and the 8:00–8:59 PM hour.
- Victory Road (Garchompite): in the outdoor clearing where you fight your rival, in front of the tower. Use Rock Smash on the cracked wall blocking the way.
- Unknown Dungeon (Mewtwonite X or Y): you get it automatically in the scene that plays right after you catch Mewtwo. No upgrade or time window needed.
Pokémon X only and Pokémon Y only
Five spots or gifts give a different stone per version. Every other stone is the same in both games.

| Pokémon X | Pokémon Y | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Charizardite X | Charizardite Y | Sycamore’s lab or the Stone Emporium |
| Mewtwonite X | Mewtwonite Y | Unknown Dungeon, given automatically right after you catch Mewtwo |
| Pinsirite | Heracronite | Santalune Forest |
| Manectite | Houndoominite | Route 16 |
| Tyranitarite | Aggronite | Cyllage City Gym |
So a single cartridge gets 22 Mega Stones: 10 from gifts and the Stone Emporium, 1 Mewtwonite, and 11 from sparkles. The other five need a trade with someone who has the other version.
Trade only: Blazikenite, Latiasite, Latiosite
These three are in X and Y’s item list, but you won’t find them anywhere in Kalos. In X and Y, Blazikenite only came held by a Torchic with Speed Boost, sent out through Mystery Gift from October 12, 2013 to January 15, 2014. All three can be found normally in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, and because X and Y already know the items, a Pokémon holding one can be traded into X and Y over local wireless, as can one from another X or Y save that already has the stone. That’s the practical way to get them today: internet trading and Mystery Gift stopped when Nintendo shut down 3DS online play on April 8, 2024.
Other Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire stones, like Beedrillite or Sablenite, aren’t in X and Y at all. A Pokémon holding one can’t even be traded in.
How Mega Evolution works in X and Y
- You need the Mega Ring (it’s a key item, you never lose it) and a Pokémon holding its own Mega Stone. Lucarionite on a Garchomp does nothing.
- In battle, tap the Mega Evolution button before choosing a move. The Pokémon changes at the start of the turn and stays Mega until it faints or the battle ends.
- Only one Pokémon per trainer can Mega Evolve in a battle.
- The stone isn’t used up. While a Pokémon holds its own Mega Stone, moves like Knock Off, Thief and Trick can’t take it away.
- Mega Evolution works in link battles too. It doesn’t work outside battle, and the Pokémon goes back to normal afterwards.
The $1,000,000 Kanto stones
The Stone Emporium on Vernal Avenue has a man on the shop floor who sells the Mega Stones for the two Kanto starters you didn’t pick. The first is available during the main story, the second only after the Hall of Fame. He asks $1,000,000 if your Lumiose style is low, and the price drops step by step to $10,000 at maximum style. He sells each stone once and doesn’t restock, even if you toss it. Unless you’re rich, raise your style first. The Stone Emporium guide has the full price table and the fastest way to raise style. Don’t confuse him with the cashier at the back, who sells Fire, Water and Leaf Stones (evolution stones, not Mega Stones).
Trading for version-exclusive stones after April 2024
The GTS and Wonder Trade are gone, but local wireless trading still works. Have the stone held by the Pokémon you’re trading, and it comes along. A trade is one for one, though: if you send your only Pinsirite for a friend’s Heracronite, you now have Heracronite and they have Pinsirite. Each game only has one copy of each stone, so to own both you need a second source, such as another X or Y save or Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire, where every X and Y stone can be found and traded over locally.
This isn’t Legends: Z-A or Omega Ruby
Pokémon Legends: Z-A is easy to mix up with X and Y, because that Switch game is also set in Lumiose City and also has a Stone Emporium. Its Mega Stones (including Meganiumite, Emboarite and Feraligite) are gifts, shop items or rewards from that game’s own story, and none of them exist on 3DS. Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, on the other hand, use Hoenn maps. A location that doesn’t exist in Kalos belongs to one of those games.
More Kalos help
Find every town and route above on the interactive Kalos map, and check which Pokémon live where in the Kalos Pokédex. The 3DS clock also controls evolving Eevee into Umbreon, with a longer night window than the Mega Stones. Looking for an evolution stone instead? See where to find a Shiny Stone. And if you came here for Mega Sableye: Sablenite isn’t in X and Y. For Gardevoirite, read the Café Soleil trade walkthrough.
FAQ
Why aren’t Mega Stones appearing in Pokémon X?
Either your Mega Ring isn’t upgraded yet, or it isn’t between 8:00 and 8:59 PM on your 3DS clock. Upgrade it after the Hall of Fame: complete at least one battle at Kiloude’s Battle Maison, beat your rival there, then touch the Anistar sundial with Sycamore.
What time do Mega Stones appear in X and Y?
From 8:00 to 8:59 PM, every evening, once your Mega Ring is upgraded. At 9:00 they disappear until the next night. Mewtwonite is the exception: you get it automatically in the scene that plays right after you catch Mewtwo.
How do I upgrade the Mega Ring?
Enter the Hall of Fame, go to Kiloude City, complete at least one battle at the Battle Maison, then beat your rival (they give you Absolite). Finally, go to the Anistar City sundial and touch it while Professor Sycamore is there.
Which Mega Stones are X or Y exclusive?
Pokémon X: Charizardite X, Mewtwonite X, Pinsirite, Manectite, Tyranitarite. Pokémon Y: Charizardite Y, Mewtwonite Y, Heracronite, Houndoominite, Aggronite.
Can I still get Blazikenite in Pokémon X?
Only by local trade. The easiest source is Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire, where Blazikenite can be found normally; trade it over held by a Pokémon. The X and Y Mystery Gift Torchic with Speed Boost and Blazikenite was distributed from October 12, 2013 to January 15, 2014. For the Pokémon itself, see how to get Torchic in X and Y.
Do I need to beat the Elite Four for every Mega Stone?
No. Seven are available during the story: Lucarionite, Sycamore’s Kanto stone, Aerodactylite, Ampharosite, Gengarite, Abomasite and one Stone Emporium stone. The sparkles, Mewtwonite, Absolite, Gardevoirite and the second Emporium stone come after the Hall of Fame.
Can I buy Stone Emporium Mega Stones twice?
No. Each one is sold once per save file and doesn’t restock.
Is this the same as Mega Stones in Legends: Z-A?
No. Z-A is a different game on Switch with its own Lumiose City, shop and stones. Nothing from it applies to X and Y.
