Miracle Mask Puzzle 007: A Toasty Toast Hints and Solution

Stuck on Puzzle 007, A Toasty Toast? Open the hints one at a time and reveal the answer only when you want it. Carnival Arcade, Chapter 1, 30 picarats.

Puzzle 007 is A Toasty Toast, the circus-tent puzzle you get from Collette in the Carnival Arcade. It's an optional 30-picarat puzzle in Chapter 1. The top screen shows the inside of a tent at night, where members of a circus troupe are toasting another good show with hot chocolate. All you can see of them is their silhouettes. The touch screen lines up six troupe members, each with a box under them. At least one of them isn't in the tent. Tick the box of everyone who is there, then submit. The hints below open one at a time, and the answer stays hidden until you choose to show it.

Video: A Toasty Toast solved. It shows the answer, so skip it if you only want the hints.

This page covers story Puzzle 007 in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask on Nintendo 3DS, using the North American text, with images rebuilt from the game's own art. The puzzle has the same name and the same answer in the UK English version, where the girl who gives it to you is called Pirouette. If you're after Daily Puzzle 007 or Puzzle 007 from another Layton game, see Wrong Puzzle 007? below.

The North American question reads: "After a long day of performing, the members of the circus troupe have changed into their street clothes and are celebrating another successful show with some hot chocolate! There is at least one member of the troupe who is not present. Who's in the tent? Select each person who is there."

Tap a performer's box to tick it, and tap it again to clear the tick. When you're happy with your ticks, submit. The game checks all six boxes at once, so every box has to be right, the ticked ones and the empty ones.

A Toasty Toast, Collette and Pirouette

The puzzle is called A Toasty Toast in both English versions. The girl who gives it to you is Collette in North America and Pirouette in the UK. The UK question is worded differently (it adds that it's "a bit nippy in there at night" and that "it's hard to tell just by looking at the silhouettes"), and the UK hints differ in small ways, but the six performers and the answer are the same.

Wrong Puzzle 007?

  • Daily Puzzle 007 in Miracle Mask is a separate puzzle from the daily set: Bewitching Night 01, the first of the streetlight puzzles. It has nothing to do with the circus tent.
  • Puzzle 031, Emperor's Throne, is the next puzzle Collette gives you, in the Carnival Arcade in Chapter 3.
  • Puzzle 007 in another Layton game is a different puzzle. If you don't see a circus tent and six performers, you're in the wrong game.

Where to find Collette

Collette, a girl with orange pigtails, a pink top and striped stockings, standing by the steps on the left of the Carnival Arcade at night in Monte d'Or
Illustration of Collette by the steps in the Carnival Arcade at night, rebuilt from the game's art.
  1. Follow the story to the Ledore Mansion. Puzzle 006, Bunny-Hop Swap, is on the bureau in the parlor there.
  2. Leave the mansion and head back into town. On the way, Aldus stops you in Knickknack Alley and explains the collection box, where the items you find for your collection are kept.
  3. In the Carnival Arcade, the street with the big toppled clown float, Collette is standing on the left of the street near the steps. Talk to her and the puzzle starts.

Before the puzzle, Collette introduces herself: she's with the circus, and she should be on stage, but some of the troupe's equipment was damaged when people were turned to stone. If you back out of the puzzle, she apologises for springing it on you and says "Come back later!" She stays put, and when you talk to her again she says "You came back for my puzzle? Yay!" and the puzzle starts over.

Don't leave it too long. Collette is only there between leaving the Ledore Mansion and the objective "Go to Layton's Hotel Room!", and she may leave as soon as you check in or only once you enter Layton's room. To be safe, solve her puzzle before you check in at the hotel. If you missed her, the puzzle isn't lost: it should turn up with Nanna Grams (known as Elizabeth in the UK version), who keeps the puzzles you missed, at the start of Chapter 3.

The Carnival Arcade has the same four hint coins you could pick up at Puzzle 002: one in the middle of the scene below the big tent (at the bottom of the balloon in the middle of the screen), one in the bushes on the left, and one each in the windows above the shops on the left and right. All four are in the normal view of the arcade, so you don't need to zoom in for any of them. You don't need any coins for this puzzle, though: every hint on this page is free.

How this page numbers the performers

The six circus performers from the Puzzle 007 touch screen, numbered 1 to 6 from left to right
Illustration of the six performers, numbered 1 to 6 from left to right as they stand on the touch screen.

The hints and the answer below count the performers from left to right, as they stand on the touch screen:

  1. A man with a tall brown quiff and a white shirt
  2. A young woman with a short teal bob and a purple top
  3. A woman with big curly brown hair, a red scarf and a grey dress
  4. An old man with white hair and a dark suit
  5. A man with glasses, curly brown hair and a long tan coat
  6. A big man with red hair, a red beard and a red waistcoat

The game's own hints use the same order ("the lady second from the left", "the gentleman fourth from the left", and so on), so you can match them to the numbers here.

Hints, one at a time

These follow the game's own hints, in the same order, with a little more explanation. Open only the next one you need. In the game, Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two.

Hint 1: the raised mugs

Count the mugs held up in the tent. There are three, so three people are toasting.

Now look at the heads behind those mugs. The hairstyles give them away: the tall quiff of the man on the left (1), the round bob of the lady second from the left (2) and the white hair of the gentleman fourth from the left (4). The toasters aren't the only people in the tent, though.

Hint 2: the ends of the tent

Look at both ends of the tent. On the far right there's a silhouette that looks like a vase of flowers.

On the far left there's a similar bushy shape. Is that a vase of flowers too?

Hint 3: the shape in the middle

Look below the two mugs in the middle. That lumpy shape is too uneven to be a table or a sofa.

It looks more like someone lying down, worn out after a day at the circus. Who's big enough to make a shape like that?

Super Hint: the last two

Look again at the bushy shape on the far left. It has legs, so it isn't a vase: it's the lady third from the left (3), and that's her curly hair.

That leaves the person napping in the middle of the tent. Work out who that is, and you know everyone who's there.

Answer and full solution

The answer below names everyone who's in the tent and the one who isn't, with a picture of the lit tent. Open it when you're ready.

Show the answer

The answer is everyone except performer 5, the man with glasses second from the right. Tick the boxes under performers 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6, leave box 5 empty, and submit. Counting from the left he's the fifth person; it's the same man.

Who's in the tent
PerformerIn the tent?Where you see them
1, the man with the quiffYesSitting on the sofa left of centre, raising a mug under his tall quiff
2, the woman with the bobYesSitting at the right end of the sofa, raising a mug under her round bob
3, the woman with curly hairYesThe "vase" on the far left, sitting with her back to you
4, the old manYesStanding just behind performer 1, raising the mug on the left
5, the man with glassesNoNowhere in the tent
6, the man with the red beardYesThe lumpy shape in the middle, lying down asleep
A Toasty Toast solved: the lit tent shows performers 1, 2 and 4 raising mugs, performer 3 sitting on a crate on the far left and performer 6 asleep on the sofa, with every box ticked except box 5
Illustration of the tent lit up, numbered to match the touch screen, and the ticks that solve it.

Step by step:

  1. The three mugs belong to performers 1, 2 and 4. Their hairstyles (the quiff, the bob and the white hair) show behind the mugs.
  2. The far-right silhouette really is a vase of flowers, standing on a box. It isn't anyone.
  3. The far-left silhouette has legs. It's performer 3, sitting on a crate with her curly hair towards you.
  4. The lumpy shape in the middle is performer 6, the big red-bearded man, asleep on the sofa.
  5. That's five people. Performer 5, the man with glasses, is the only one missing, so his box stays empty.

The game's correct-answer message agrees: "All members aside from the chap second from the right are present and accounted for."

If your answer keeps failing:

  • You only ticked the three toasters. Performers 3 and 6 are in the tent too, even though they aren't holding mugs.
  • You ticked all six. The question says at least one member is missing. Clear box 5.
  • A box you meant to tick is empty. Each tap switches a box on or off, so a second tap clears it. Check all six boxes before you submit.

A wrong answer gets "Too bad. Take a deep breath, and try again," and you can try again straight away.

Picarats, hints and hint coins

A Toasty Toast is worth 30 picarats. Wrong answers can drop it to 27 and then 24, though how many misses it takes to drop a step isn't clear. Hints cost hint coins, not picarats: each of the first three hints costs one coin and the Super Hint costs two, so opening all four costs five coins.

The Carnival Arcade has only four coins, all in the normal view, so they don't pay for all four hints on their own, and you may already have collected them at Puzzle 002. You don't need any coins here, though, since every hint on this page is free.

Nintendo's game manual covers hint coins, retrying puzzles and the trunk: Game manual (PDF).

Versions and systems

  • Nintendo 3DS, 3DS XL, 2DS and New 3DS: no difference. You tick the boxes with the stylus.
  • US and UK English versions: same name, same six performers, same answer. The girl's name (Collette or Pirouette) and some of the wording change.
  • Japanese Miracle Mask Plus: the 2013 Japan-only re-release added new content, but this puzzle appears to be unchanged.
  • Other systems: Miracle Mask is a 3DS game. There's no Switch, mobile or PC version of it as of October 2026.

The scene with Collette (story spoiler)

Spoiler warning: this section covers the conversation around the puzzle. Collette tells Layton she's with the circus and should be on stage, but some of the troupe's equipment was damaged when people were turned to stone. Everyone was having fun at the parade until the masked man ruined it, she says. She calls him a jerk, says sorry for sounding negative and offers a puzzle "to lighten things". When it's solved, she praises the group ("You really are a pretty smart bunch!") and asks if they know anything about the strange goings-on, which started about the time the circus got to town. The police think the masked man is some kind of magician, she says, but these are no simple tricks, and magic shouldn't be used to harm people or cause chaos, "unless the chaos was making rainbow puppies or something..." Luke couldn't agree more. Talk to her again afterwards and she says Monte d'Or has tons of things to do, and it's too bad the masked man is trying to ruin everything.

FAQ

Where is the answer to Puzzle 007?

It's in the Answer and full solution section above, hidden until you open it. If you only want a push, open the hints one at a time first.

What is Puzzle 007 called?

A Toasty Toast, in both the North American and UK English versions. In Japanese it's テントの中には.

Is it Collette or Pirouette?

Both: she's Collette in the North American version and Pirouette in the UK version. It's the same girl and the same puzzle.

Collette isn't in the Carnival Arcade. What now?

If you haven't been to the Ledore Mansion yet, carry on with the story; she only turns up after that visit. If you've already checked in at the hotel or gone up to Layton's room, she may be gone, and the puzzle should then be with Nanna Grams from the start of Chapter 3.

How do I select the performers?

Tap a performer's box on the touch screen to tick it, and tap it again to clear it. Tick everyone you think is in the tent, then submit. All six boxes are checked together.

How many picarats is Puzzle 007 worth?

30 picarats.

Is Puzzle 007 missable?

Not for good. Collette leaves the arcade around the time you check in at the hotel, but the puzzle should then turn up with Nanna Grams in Chapter 3, so you can still complete the puzzle list.

Is Daily Puzzle 007 the same as Puzzle 007?

No. Daily Puzzle 007 is Bewitching Night 01, a streetlight puzzle from the daily set. Story Puzzle 007 is Collette's circus-tent puzzle.
