Puzzle 083 is Settle the Scores, a 40-picarat Write Answer puzzle that Sterling gives you on Chance Avenue in Chapter 5. The story doesn't need it. Three darts players have just finished a game, and each dartboard shows where their four darts landed and how many points they scored. From those three totals, you work out how many points each of the four colored sections, A to D, is worth. The values are all different single digits of at least one point, and they get bigger toward the center. You write one number in each of the four boxes.
This page covers story Puzzle 083 in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask on Nintendo 3DS. The dartboards and the answer are the same in the US and UK English versions; the UK wording differs slightly. Quotes use the North American text. If you're after Daily Puzzle 083 or Puzzle 83 from another Layton game, see Wrong Puzzle 083? below.

What Puzzle 083 is
| Name | Settle the Scores (the same in the US and UK English versions) |
|---|---|
| Type | Write Answer (one number in each of four boxes) |
| Picarats | 40 |
| Location | Chance Avenue |
| Chapter | Chapter 5 |
| Given by | Sterling |
| Reward | Shop aisle 8, Plush Toys |
| Previous puzzle number | Puzzle 082, Rainbow Repair (Dalston Mansion) |
| Next puzzle number | Puzzle 084, Neon Orange (Casino Entrance) |
The question reads: "Three darts players have just finished a game. Based on the point totals shown, can you work out how many points each different color section of the dartboard is worth? No two sections have the same value, and their values increase the closer they are to the center. Each is worth a single-digit value of at least one point." The objective bar asks, "Find each section's value!"
The top screen shows three dartboards side by side. A wedge at the top names the rings: D is the outer ring, then C (the blue ring), then B, and A is the red center. The left board scored 25 points, the middle board 26 and the right board 22. The touch screen has four boxes, labeled A, B, C and D, for your four numbers.
How the dartboards work
- Four sections. Every board has the same four sections, A to D, and each section is worth the same on every board.
- Every dart counts. A player's total is the sum of the values of the sections their four darts landed in.
- Bigger toward the middle. D, the outer ring, is worth the least and A, the center, the most. No two sections have the same value.
- Single digits only. Each value is a whole number from 1 to 9.
Puzzle names
| Version | Puzzle name |
|---|---|
| North America | Settle the Scores |
| UK English | Settle the Scores |
| Japanese | ダーツの点数 (Dātsu no Tensū, "darts scores") |
The name is the same in the US and UK English versions. The UK text uses British spelling ("colour", "centre" and "analyse") and a few small wording changes: the question opens "Three darts players have just finished a game, with the results as shown.", and Hint 3 says "segment C". The UK version also calls Sterling by another name, Waltham. The dartboards and the answer are the same in the US and UK English versions.
Wrong Puzzle 083?
- Daily Puzzle 083 is Tile Show 02, from the Whose Tile Is It Anyway? set.
- Puzzle 082, Rainbow Repair, comes just before this one, at Dalston Mansion. Puzzle 084, Neon Orange, comes just after, at the Casino Entrance. If your puzzle isn't about dartboards, check the number again.
- Puzzle 83 in another Layton game is a different puzzle. If yours doesn't show three dartboards with totals, you're in the wrong game.
Where you get it
Later in Chapter 5, after you talk to Henry, night falls on Monte d'Or and your objective reads "Continue the Investigation!" From then on, Sterling is on Chance Avenue, the street of neon signs. He stands in the street next to the two signboards on the left. He says, "Well, the neon is a bit gaudy, but it adds a kind of shine to the gold." Emmy answers, "I would say artificial light matches your particular...charms, Mr. Sterling." Sterling says, "An excellent observation, dear girl." and then "And may I also compliment you on your ability to maintain your senses in the face of my shimmering magnificence?" Emmy replies, "I would...prefer it if you didn't." and Luke adds, "Yeah, it's really not that difficult." Sterling ends with "Ah well, I can't expect everyone to fully appreciate the finer things!" and the puzzle starts.

Sterling stays on Chance Avenue while your objective reads "Continue the Investigation!", "Follow the Officer to Carnival Square!", "Go to the Scorpion Casino!", "Go to Pumpkin Park!", "Investigate the Attractions!" and "Head to Topsy Tower!", and his puzzle is gone once you're told to "Catch the Masked Gentleman!".
Chance Avenue has four hint coins, all in the normal view.
- The blue clown sign, high up on the left.
- The signboards in the street on the left.
- The pink pig sign, high up on the right.
- The banner hanging from the arcade roof, far down the street.
Each coin can be collected only once, so any you picked up on an earlier visit are gone.
If you leave Puzzle 083 unsolved, it goes to Nanna Grams (known as Elizabeth in the UK version) at the start of Chapter 7.
When you're stuck
- Count the darts. Note how many darts each player has in each section before you do any sums.
- Start with the simplest board. One of the three boards uses only two of the sections, and that makes it the easiest to work out.
- Use the rules. Once the totals narrow things down, the order of the sections and the 1 to 9 limit settle the rest.
Hints, one at a time
These are the game's own hints, word for word from the North American version and in the same order. Open only the next one you need. In the game, Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two.
Hint 1
The middle player's dartboard has two darts each in section A and section D, for a total of 26 points. So sections A and D must add up to half of 26, or 13.
What does that mean?
Hint 2
The left player's dartboard has one dart in each section from A to D, for a total of 25 points.
From Hint 1, you know that A + D = 13, so subtracting that from the total tells you that B + C = 12.
Hint 3
The right player's dartboard has one dart in section B and three in section C. You already know that B + C = 12, so subtract that from the total, and you have 10 points left for the other two darts in section C. That means section C is worth 5 points.
Now you just need to substitute that value in the other equations you've worked out using the previous hints.
Super Hint
The previous hints have shown that C = 5 and B + C = 12. Thus, B = 7.
The puzzle description tells you that A must be higher than B but still a single digit, so it has to be either 8 or 9.
D cannot equal 0 and must be lower than C, so it has to be 1, 2, 3, or 4. And you already know that A + D = 13...
Answer and full solution
The answer below covers every step, with a picture of the solved puzzle. Open it when you're ready.
Show the answer
A is worth 9 points, B 7, C 5 and D 4. Write 9, 7, 5 and 4 in the boxes A, B, C and D, then touch Submit.
| Section | Where it is | Points |
|---|---|---|
| A | Red center | 9 |
| B | Ring around the center | 7 |
| C | Blue ring | 5 |
| D | Outer ring | 4 |
Step by step:
- Middle board, 26 points. Two darts in A and two in D, so A + D is half of 26: 13.
- Left board, 25 points. One dart in each section, so A + B + C + D = 25. Take away the 13 for A and D, and B + C = 12.
- Right board, 22 points. One dart in B and three in C. One B and one C make 12, so the other two darts in C make 10, and C = 5.
- Find B. B + C = 12 and C = 5, so B = 7.
- Find A and D. A is higher than B and a single digit, so it's 8 or 9. D is at least 1 and lower than C, so it's 1, 2, 3 or 4. Only 9 + 4 makes 13, so A = 9 and D = 4.
Check: the left board makes 9 + 7 + 5 + 4 = 25, the middle board 9 + 9 + 4 + 4 = 26 and the right board 7 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 22.
The game's message when you're right reads: "Correct! A = 9, B = 7, C = 5, and D = 4. As long as you remember that the only possible values are from one to nine, this is just simple calculation."

If it still doesn't finish:
- Check the order of the boxes. The boxes run A, B, C, D from left to right, so the biggest number goes in the first box.
- Check your writing. If a digit isn't read correctly, use the eraser button under that box and write it again.
If you give a wrong answer, the game says, "Too bad. One of the three players' results should be easier to analyze than the others."
Picarats, hints and hint coins
Settle the Scores shows 40 picarats when it starts. The puzzle can award 40, 35 or 30 picarats. Wrong answers may reduce the picarat value. If you back out of the puzzle, Sterling says, "I knew it! Not even interested in bettering yourselves through sport!" Talk to him again and he says, "I suspected you wouldn't be able to comprehend the subtle intricacies of such a refined sport." before the puzzle starts again.
Hints cost hint coins, not picarats. Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two, five in total. Chance Avenue's four coins are one short of that, so you'd need a coin saved from elsewhere to open every hint. Or use the free hints on this page and save your coins.
What it unlocks
Solving Settle the Scores adds the eighth aisle to the Shop minigame in the Professor's trunk: Plush Toys. The game announces, "You got a new shop aisle: "Plush Toys"!" Its description says, "Children adore our cute and cuddly collection of stuffed toys, particularly our teddy bears, kitties, and bunnies." Solving it also adds its picarats to your total and counts toward the puzzles you've solved.
Versions
- Nintendo 3DS family: this page covers the 3DS game (US and UK English). You write the four numbers on the touch screen.
- US and UK English versions: the name, the dartboards and the answer are the same. The question and hints are worded a little differently, as described under Puzzle names.
The scene around the puzzle
Sterling talks with Luke and Emmy. Once the puzzle is solved, Sterling says, "I must say that I'm impressed such lower-class rabble could reason out the basics of such a refined sport."
Luke answers, "Um, not that it matters. But my family is actually rather wealthy, and my parents are quite sophisticated. Good day." Emmy adds, "Someday you'll realize that you can't take it with you, Sterling!" Sterling replies, "Spoken like a true hourly-wage earner."
Talk to him again and he says, "I could stare at these lights for hours..."
