Miracle Mask Puzzle 080: Sharing the Burden 2 Hints and Answer

Stuck on Puzzle 080, Sharing the Burden 2? Two porters, two pieces of luggage and a 20-pound limit each, all in one trip. Open the hints one at a time and show the answer only when you want it. Arrange, 30 picarats, Dromedary Lobby, Chapter 5.

Puzzle 080 is Sharing the Burden 2, a 30-picarat Arrange puzzle that Pascal, the clerk at the front desk of the Dromedary hotel, gives you in the Dromedary Lobby in Chapter 5. It's optional. Two porters have to carry two pieces of luggage in a single trip. You don't know what the pieces weigh, only that each is at least 10 lbs., that they come to 40 lbs. or less together, and that each porter can carry up to 20 lbs. Put the luggage in their hands, ring the bell and see whether they manage. It's the follow-up to Puzzle 012, Sharing the Burden, which had six bags.

This page covers story Puzzle 080 in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask on Nintendo 3DS (US and UK English), using the North American text. The UK text gives the weights in kilograms. If you're after Daily Puzzle 080, the first porter puzzle or Puzzle 80 from another Layton game, see Wrong Puzzle 080? below.

Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask Puzzle 080 Sharing the Burden 2: on the top, two hotel porters in blue uniforms and blue caps face each other with empty hands held out, one with brown hair on the left and one with a red beard on the right, in a cream hall with an arched doorway, a round hanging lamp and potted plants on red stands; below, a shelf on the left holds an orange piece of luggage marked A above a teal one marked B, two tall orange panels in the middle show the porters' silhouettes, and a bell button is on the right

The question reads: "Two porters have to carry two pieces of luggage of unknown weight. Each piece weighs a different amount, and they both weigh at least 10 lbs. Their total weight is 40 lbs. or less." It goes on: "Each porter can carry up to 20 lbs. at once, and they want to carry both pieces of luggage in one trip." Then it asks, "How should they carry the luggage? Put the luggage in their hands, and then ring the bell."

The objective at the top of the touch screen is "Carry the luggage!" On the left is a small shelf with the two pieces of luggage, an orange one marked A and a teal one marked B. In the middle, two tall orange panels show the silhouettes of the two porters, and on the right is a bell. Drag the luggage onto the porters, then tap the bell. The bell only does something once both pieces are off the shelf.

The touch screen of Sharing the Burden 2 with labels: Shelf over the small shelf on the left that holds piece A and piece B, Left porter and Right porter under the two orange panels with the porters' silhouettes, and Bell over the bell button on the right. A list beside it says: Two pieces, A and B; Different weights, each at least 10 lbs; Together: 40 lbs or less; Each porter: up to 20 lbs; One trip, then ring the bell

The UK text uses kilograms with the same numbers: each piece weighs at least 10 kg, the two come to 40 kg or less, and each porter can carry up to 20 kg. It also words a few lines differently: the porters want to carry both pieces "in one go", Hint 2 says the pieces weigh 40 kg or less "in total", the question ends "Put the luggage in their hands and then ring the bell." without the comma, and the first sentence of the Super Hint is worded a little differently. The puzzle name and the answer are the same in the US and UK English versions.

Wrong Puzzle 080?

  • Puzzle 012, Sharing the Burden, is the first porter puzzle. It's also from Pascal in the Dromedary Lobby, but it comes in Chapter 1, has six bags labelled A to F and is worth 35 picarats. See Puzzle 012.
  • Daily Puzzle 080 is Tortoises 01, from the Sun, Sand, and Turtles set.
  • Puzzle 80 in another Layton game is a different puzzle. If yours isn't about two porters and two pieces of luggage, you're in the wrong game.

Where you find it

In Chapter 5, once you've met Henry and your objective goes back to "Continue the Investigation!", head back to the Dromedary hotel. Pascal is at the front desk in the lobby. He greets Layton with "Welcome back, Professor Layton. I trust you have been sufficiently impressed by the sights of our magnificent city?" Layton answers, "I'm afraid I spent the whole day working, so I have yet to fully appreciate Monte d'Or." Pascal says, "I'm certain you'll have that chance soon. In the meantime, could I ask you for a small favor?" and then "Our bellhops are having trouble keeping up with the luggage for our guests." The puzzle starts.

The Dromedary Lobby in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask: green striped sofas and a wooden coffee table with a vase of pink flowers in front, a checkered floor, two thick cream pillars, a hanging chandelier, a framed landscape painting on the back wall, a little cottage-shaped display with a tree and a golden camel statue on the right, and tall windows with leaf patterns high up. A gold ring with the name plate Pascal, Puzzle 080 marks a spot at the top of the short steps at the back, and four hint coin spots are numbered 1 high on the right wall by the upper windows, 2 at the vase on the coffee table, 3 at the painting and 4 at the chandelier
Illustration of the Dromedary Lobby. The gold ring marks where Pascal stands, and the numbers mark the four hint coins in the list below.

Pascal has the puzzle from the time you've met Henry until your objective becomes "Catch the Masked Gentleman!", so it's still there while your objective reads "Go to the Scorpion Casino!", "Go to Pumpkin Park!" or "Head to Topsy Tower!". The story doesn't need it. If you miss it, it goes to Nanna Grams (known as Elizabeth in the UK version) at the start of Chapter 7.

The Dromedary Lobby has four hint coins, all in the normal view. They're the same four as in Chapter 1, and each coin can be collected only once, so if you picked them up during Puzzle 012 they're already gone.

  1. High on the right-hand wall, by the upper windows.
  2. The vase of flowers on the coffee table in front of you.
  3. The framed painting on the back wall.
  4. The chandelier hanging left of the central pillars.

Hints, one at a time

These are the game's own hints, word for word from the North American version and in the same order. Open only the next one you need. In the game, Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two.

Hint 1: try things out

Start by having them hold the luggage in as many ways as you can think of. Perhaps you'll come across the solution.

Hint 2: the total weight

It appears that even if the porters take one piece of luggage each, they won't be able to carry both pieces. What to do, then?

One fact you should bear in mind is that in all, the two pieces of luggage weigh 40 lbs. or less.

Hint 3: the weights again

One of the pieces of luggage must weigh more than 20 lbs. That's why it's impossible for the porters to take one piece each.

Is there some way the porters could work together to carry the luggage?

Super Hint: the last push

Why not try placing both pieces of luggage right in the middle, between the two porters, and then ringing the bell?

What do you suppose will happen?

Answer and full solution

The answer below explains why it works and what happens with the other ways of holding the luggage, with pictures. Open it when you're ready.

Show the answer

Answer: put both pieces of luggage in the middle, between the two porters, so they carry them together. Drag A and B off the shelf and drop them in the gap where the two orange panels meet, one on top of the other, then ring the bell. The porters step toward each other, take the luggage between them and carry it together.

Why it works:

  1. One piece each can't work. Try it and one porter buckles. As Hint 3 puts it, that means one of the pieces must weigh more than 20 lbs., so whoever holds it on his own is over his limit.
  2. Both pieces on one porter is even worse. He'd have the heavy piece plus the other one.
  3. Sharing halves the load. Luggage placed in the middle is carried by both porters, half each. Two pieces that weigh 40 lbs. or less in total put 20 lbs. or less on each porter, which is exactly his limit or under it. The puzzle's own line when you solve it: "The solution is for them to share the load. Teamwork is everything!"
Sharing the Burden 2 solved: on the top, the two porters have stepped toward each other in the middle of the hall and hold the orange piece of luggage with the teal one stacked on it between them, under a Puzzle Solved! banner; on the touch screen, B sits on top of A in the gap between the two orange panels
Illustration of both pieces in the middle: the porters carry them together.

If a porter is carrying too much, he buckles, a "Too bad" message appears on the top screen and the porters stand up straight again with empty hands. That doesn't count as a wrong answer: move the luggage and ring the bell again as often as you like. Every other way of placing the two pieces ends this way:

  • One piece each: the porter holding B buckles. B is the heavier piece.
  • Both pieces on one porter: that porter buckles.
  • One piece in the middle and one in a porter's hands: the porter holding the other piece buckles, because he also takes half of the shared one.
Sharing the Burden 2 with one piece each: on the top, the porter on the left holds the orange piece of luggage and the porter on the right leans back under the teal piece, with Too bad... across the middle; on the touch screen, A sits in the left porter's panel and B in the right porter's panel
Illustration of one piece each: the porter with B can't manage it.

Picarats, hints and hint coins

Sharing the Burden 2 shows 30 picarats when it starts. Its three picarat values are all 30. If you leave the puzzle without solving it, Pascal says, "With so many guests, it's imperative that our staff carry their luggage as efficiently as possible." Talk to him again and he says, "The busy season is quite hard on our staff's backs, I'm afraid." before the puzzle starts again.

Hints cost hint coins, not picarats. Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two, five in total. The lobby's four coins cover Hints 1 to 3 but not the Super Hint, and only if you didn't collect them in Chapter 1. Or use the free hints on this page and save your coins.

Does it unlock anything?

No. Solving Sharing the Burden 2 doesn't open a place, a minigame stage or a shop item. You get the picarats and the puzzle in your collection.

Versions

  • Nintendo 3DS family: this page covers the 3DS game. You drag the luggage with the stylus and tap the bell on the touch screen.
  • US and UK English versions: same name, the same luggage and the same answer in the US and UK English versions. The UK text uses kilograms instead of pounds and words a few lines differently, as described under Puzzle names.

The scene around the puzzle

Pascal asks for the favor because the hotel is busy: "Our bellhops are having trouble keeping up with the luggage for our guests." Once the puzzle is solved, he says, "We're lucky the incidents haven't hurt our business here." and "Well, I hope that soon you will get to see the sights in our lovely city." Talk to him again afterwards and he says, "Anytime you need a rest, please enjoy all our hotel has to offer."
