Puzzle 082 is Rainbow Repair, a 35-picarat Tile puzzle that Gonzales gives you at Dalston Mansion in Chapter 5. A window has been broken, and the lady of the house wants it mended with six colored strips of tape so that it looks exactly like her drawing. The catch is that the drawing shows the window from outside, while the tape goes on the inside. The puzzle is not mandatory, and solving it opens the seventh Toy Robot course, Sturdy Ship.
This page covers story Puzzle 082 in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask on Nintendo 3DS. The window, the tape and the answer are the same in the US and UK English versions; the UK wording differs slightly. Quotes use the North American text. If you're after Daily Puzzle 082 or Puzzle 82 from another Layton game, see Wrong Puzzle 082? below.

What Puzzle 082 is
| Name | Rainbow Repair (the same in the US and UK English versions) |
|---|---|
| Type | Tile (stick six strips of tape on the window) |
| Picarats | 35 |
| Location | Dalston Mansion |
| Chapter | Chapter 5 |
| Given by | Gonzales, who works for Mr. Dalston |
| Required for the story? | No |
| Reward | Toy Robot course 7, Sturdy Ship |
| Previous puzzle number | Puzzle 081, King Arthur's Sword (One-Ring Circus) |
| Next puzzle number | Puzzle 083, Settle the Scores (Chance Avenue) |
The question reads: "Oh dear! It seems you've accidentally broken a window while playing near a grand manor. The lady of the house didn't lose her cool but just told you this: "I'd like you to use these six colored pieces of tape to mend the window exactly as shown in this drawing. The tape should go on the inside of the window, of course." The drawing shows the window as she'd like it to look from the outside. Can you apply the tape to the window so that she's satisfied?" The objective bar asks, "What's the correct order?"
The top screen shows the broken window from outside, and a hand holds up the lady's drawing. In the drawing, three strips run down the window (green, red and yellow, from left to right) and three run across it (pink, blue and orange, from top to bottom), and they overlap one another. The touch screen shows the same window from inside, with the six strips standing in a row next to it.
How the tape works
- Three bands each way. The cracked glass forms three bands running down the window and three running across it. A strip of tape covers one whole band, either upright or lying across.
- Later tape goes on top. From the inside, a strip you stick on later covers the strips already there where they cross.
- The drawing is the outside view. Seen from outside, the window is the other way round: left and right swap, and the strip stuck on first is the one in front.
- Every strip is used. There are six strips and six bands, and the drawing shows all six colors.
Puzzle names
| Version | Puzzle name |
|---|---|
| North America | Rainbow Repair |
| UK English | Rainbow Repair |
| Japanese | 割れた窓ガラス (Wareta Madogarasu, "broken window glass") |
The name is the same in the US and UK English versions. The UK text uses British spelling ("coloured" and "colour") and a few small wording changes, such as "Now, can you apply the tape" in the question and "the red striped tape" in Hint 3. The window, the tape and the answer are the same in the US and UK English versions.
Wrong Puzzle 082?
- Daily Puzzle 082 is Fountain 01, from the Pipework Patch-up set.
- Puzzle 081, King Arthur's Sword, comes just before this one, at the One-Ring Circus. Puzzle 083, Settle the Scores, comes just after, on Chance Avenue. If your puzzle isn't about tape on a window, check the number again.
- Puzzle 82 in another Layton game is a different puzzle. If yours doesn't show a broken window and six strips of tape, you're in the wrong game.
Where you get it
Puzzle 082 comes in Chapter 5, at night, after your talk with Henry, when your objective reads "Continue the Investigation!" Go to Dalston Mansion. Gonzales stands in front of the mansion's gate. He says, "It has only been a day since Mr. Dalston was arrested, and I'm already lost!" Then he adds, "I wanted to testify on his behalf, but the police said I must wait for the trial." and "Then I returned home to find one of the windows broken!" Finally he asks, "Mr. Dalston is very particular about repairs. What should I do?" and the puzzle starts.
Gonzales has this puzzle while your objective is "Continue the Investigation!", "Follow the Officer to Carnival Square!", "Go to the Scorpion Casino!", "Go to Pumpkin Park!", "Investigate the Attractions!" and "Head to Topsy Tower!", and his puzzle is gone once you're told to "Catch the Masked Gentleman!".
If you quit, Gonzales says, "You, sir, are heartless." Talk to him again and he says, "I'm not sure how to repair this window," and the puzzle starts again.

Hint coins at Dalston Mansion
Dalston Mansion has four hint coins, all in the normal view: on the ground in front of the gate (1), on the chimney at the top of the left side of the house (2), by the small cactus on the right (3) and on the chimney on the right side of the roof (4). Each coin can be collected only once, so any you picked up on an earlier visit are gone.
If you leave Puzzle 082 unsolved, it goes to Nanna Grams (known as Elizabeth in the UK version) at the start of Chapter 7.
When you're stuck
- Left and right. You're working from inside, but the drawing shows the outside. A strip on the left of the drawing goes on the right as you look at the touch screen.
- Front and back. Seen from outside, the strip you stick on first is the one in front, so start with the strip that nothing covers in the drawing.
- Work one strip at a time. Each time, look at the drawing for the strip that only the strips you've already used lie on top of.
Hints, one at a time
These are the game's own hints, word for word from the North American version and in the same order. Open only the next one you need. In the game, Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two.
Hint 1
Don't forget that the sketch shows the result as seen from outside the house. How would the frontmost piece of tape as seen from the outside look when viewing the window from the inside?
Hint 2
The first piece of tape that you stick on the inside of the window will become the frontmost piece of tape when viewing the window from outside.
Which means you need to start with the blue diamond tape.
Hint 3
When viewed from outside, the striped red tape comes after the blue tape.
Which color comes next?
Super Hint
Here's the order of the tape as viewed from outside. First the blue diamond tape, then the striped red tape, the orange tape with diagonal stripes, the striped green tape, the pink tape with squares, and finally the plain yellow tape.
Oh, and don't forget that since the picture shows the view from outside rather than inside, you'll need to mirror the layout.
Answer and full solution
The answer below covers the order and the place for each strip of tape, step by step, with pictures of each step and of the solved puzzle. Open it when you're ready.
Show the answer
Stick the tape on in this order: blue diamonds across the middle, striped red down the middle, orange diagonals across the bottom, striped green down the right, pink squares across the top and plain yellow down the left. Left and right here are as you see the window on the touch screen, from inside.

| Step | Tape | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Blue with diamonds | Across the middle row |
| 2 | Striped red | Down the middle column |
| 3 | Orange with diagonal stripes | Across the bottom row |
| 4 | Striped green | Down the right column |
| 5 | Pink with squares | Across the top row |
| 6 | Plain yellow | Down the left column |
Step by step:
- Mirror the drawing. In the drawing, green is on the left and yellow on the right. From inside, left and right swap, so green goes in the right column, red stays in the middle and yellow goes in the left column. The strips across the window stay where they are: pink at the top, blue in the middle and orange at the bottom.
- Find the front strip. In the drawing, nothing covers the blue diamond strip. From outside, the first strip you stick on is the one in front, so blue goes on first.
- Keep peeling the drawing back. With blue gone, nothing covers the striped red strip, so it's second. Then come orange, green and pink, and plain yellow, which lies under everything in the drawing, goes on last.
The game's message when you're right starts "Splendid!" and then explains: "Since you're working from the inside, you need to start with the tape at the very front of the design and work toward the back. And, of course, you need to remember that the whole design will be mirrored too. Hopefully the lady of the manor will be happy with this solution..."

If it still doesn't finish:
- Check left and right. If green ends up on the left and yellow on the right, you've copied the drawing without mirroring it.
- Check the crossings. Blue must be under everything as you look from inside, and yellow on top of everything. If any strip covers the wrong one, the order is off: compare your window with the table above, one step at a time.
Picarats, hints and hint coins
Its three picarat values are all 35.
Hints cost hint coins, not picarats. Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two, five in total. Dalston Mansion's four coins can cover Hints 1 to 3 but not all four hints, and you can use the free hints on this page.
Does it unlock anything?
Yes. Solving Rainbow Repair opens the seventh course of the Toy Robot minigame in the Professor's trunk, Sturdy Ship. Solving it also adds its picarats to your total and counts toward the puzzles you've solved.
Versions
- Nintendo 3DS family: this page covers the 3DS game (US and UK English). You move the tape on the touch screen.
- US and UK English versions: the name, the window, the tape and the answer are the same. The question and hints are worded a little differently, as described under Puzzle names.
The scene around the puzzle
Gonzales talks with Layton. Once the window is mended, Gonzales says, "Ah, thank you. Now I must wait for Mr. Dalston's return." Layton tells him, "I assure you that we're doing everything in our power to find the real criminal." and asks, "You don't have any information that may help us, do you?"
Gonzales answers, "I wish I did. I know very little of the master's daily comings and goings." He goes on, "I knew he received advance warning from the Masked Gentleman, though." and "I think it's that shifty Mr. Ledore who is behind all of this!" He adds, "Mr. Dalston is not popular around town, but he is a good man."
Layton asks, "How did you and Mr. Dalston first meet?" Gonzales replies, "I needed a job, and Mr. Dalston hired me. During my years here, he has always treated me with dignity." and "I shudder to think what I will do if he goes to prison for this nasty business..."
Talk to him again and he says, "Thank you for believing in Mr. Dalston." and "Please make certain that the police restore Mr. Dalston's good name. A decent name, anyway. Not his bad name."
