Miracle Mask Puzzle 103: Stars of the Stage Hints and Answer

Stuck on Puzzle 103 (Stars of the Stage)? Tyrone in the Big Top remembers his old ringleader's puzzle: two star-shaped stages, cameras on the star points and nine people, A to I. Open the four hints one at a time and show the answer only when you want it. Select puzzle, 50 picarats, Chapter 7.

Puzzle 103 is Stars of the Stage, a 50-picarat Select puzzle in the Big Top in Monte d'Or, in Chapter 7. Tyrone, the circus ringleader, offers it as a puzzle his former ringleader liked to stump the troupe with. Two star-shaped stages have cameras on their points, numbered 1 to 5 on the left star and 6 to 10 on the right, and nine people, A to I, stand around them. You pick out everyone the host is telling off for being on more than one camera.

This page covers story Puzzle 103 in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, the 3DS game (US and UK English). The stage and the answer are the same in the US and UK English versions; quotes use the North American text. If you're after Daily Puzzle 103 or Puzzle 103 from another Layton game, see Wrong Puzzle 103? below.

The puzzle opens with the host's warning: "Get ready for the time of your lives on our spectacular stage! Pay attention as we have cameras placed on the corners of the stars. Their viewing angle is only as wide as the edges of each star point. Stay free of the center, and try not to end up being caught on more than one camera, will you?" Then the host shouts: "Hey! Haven't you been listening? You're on more than one camera!" Then it asks: "Who is the host telling off?" The objective bar says "Who's the host telling off?"

The top screen shows both stars from above, with the camera numbers on the star points and the nine people around them. Each camera looks outward, and it only sees what lies between the two edges of its own star point, carried on in straight lines. The touch screen shows the nine people as portrait cards. Touch a card to choose that person, touch it again to change your mind, and submit when you've chosen everyone you think is on more than one camera. More than one person can be the answer.

Wrong Puzzle 103?

  • Daily Puzzle 103 is Train 04, from the Trains and Train Spotters set.
  • Puzzle 102, Dice Crates, is the puzzle before this one, outside at the One-Ring Circus. If yours has four giant dice and a crane, that's the one you've got.
  • Puzzle 104, Undercover Code, is the next puzzle, hidden in Dalston Parlor. If yours is about a novel with no page numbers, that's the one you've got.
  • Puzzle 103 in another Layton game is a different puzzle. If yours doesn't show two star-shaped stages with cameras, you're in the wrong game.

Where you find it

Chapter 7 opens on the fourth day of the investigation in Monte d'Or, in Layton's Room at the Dromedary, where Emmy asks, "Where should we start today, Professor?" Go to the One-Ring Circus, step inside the Big Top and talk to Tyrone by the stage.

Tyrone remembers, "This whole area used to be just an empty wasteland." Layton asks, "Have you always been in the circus?" and Tyrone answers, "Nah. I ran away from the rat race to join the clown race. The old days were great. Every night, I'd listen to our ringleader for hours." Then he recalls, "That reminds me! He enjoyed stumping us now and again with this puzzle of his!" and the puzzle starts.

Inside the Big Top: rows of seats around a circus ring with a curtained stage at the back, a teal ring at the stage curtain and a gold label reading Tyrone, Puzzle 103
Illustration of the Big Top. The teal ring marks where Tyrone stands.

You don't have to solve it to move on. Tyrone keeps offering it for the rest of Chapter 7, and he's back in the Big Top with it after the story ends.

When the cameras get confusing

  • You keep counting the same person twice. Go camera by camera instead of person by person, the way Hint 1 suggests, and write down who each camera sees.
  • You're not sure what a camera can see. Extend the two edges of its star point outward in straight lines. Only people between those lines are on that camera.
  • The game says "Too bad." The wrong-answer message is "Too bad. It's all in how you count it." You can try again.
  • You can't find the puzzle. Talk to Tyrone inside the Big Top during Chapter 7.

Hints, one at a time

These are the game's own hints, word for word from the North American version and in the same order. Open only the next one you need. In the game, Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two.

Hint 1: count by camera

It might be easier to think about which camera's capturing who, rather than how many cameras each person appears on.

Hint 2: the right star

Make a note of who appears on each camera. On the right star:

Camera 10: G
Camera 9: A, I
Camera 8: C
Camera 7: D
Camera 6: F

How about the ones on the left?

Hint 3: the left star

On the left star:

Camera 1: H
Camera 2: D, E, F, G
Camera 3: B, C
Camera 4: A
Camera 5: No one

Now just take Hint 2 into consideration, and think it through a bit more.

Super Hint: add them up

Simply add up how many cameras each person has been caught on using the information from Hints 2 and 3.

A is on two cameras, B on one, C on two, D on two, E on one, F on two, G on two, H on one, and I on one.

So who shows up on more than one camera?

Answer and full solution

The answer below names everyone the host is telling off, lists who each camera sees and shows the finished puzzle. Open it when you're ready.

Show the answer

Answer: A, C, D, F and G. Touch those five portraits and submit.

Who each camera sees
Left starSeesRight starSees
Camera 1HCamera 6F
Camera 2D, E, F, GCamera 7D
Camera 3B, CCamera 8C
Camera 4ACamera 9A, I
Camera 5No oneCamera 10G

Now count the cameras for each person:

  • On two cameras: A (4 and 9), C (3 and 8), D (2 and 7), F (2 and 6) and G (2 and 10).
  • On one camera: B (3), E (2), H (1) and I (9).
The finished puzzle: on the top screen, dashed white lines show what each camera on the two star stages can see; on the touch screen, the portraits of A, C, D, F and G carry teal check marks
Illustration of the five people caught on two cameras, checked on the touch screen.

The game confirms it: "Correct! The answer is A, C, D, F, and G. It looks as if quite a lot of people got an earful from the host!"

If it still doesn't work out:

  • You chose E. E is on camera 2 only. Camera 2 sees four people, but that's still one camera each.
  • You chose I or B. Each of them is on just one camera, 9 for I and 3 for B.
  • You left someone out. All five of A, C, D, F and G have to be chosen together.

Picarats, hints and hint coins

Stars of the Stage shows 50 picarats when it starts. The puzzle can award 50, 40 or 30 picarats. Wrong answers may reduce the picarat value. A wrong answer brings the message "Too bad. It's all in how you count it." When you talk to Tyrone again, he says, "Our old ringleader really loved puzzles." before the puzzle starts again.

Hints cost hint coins, not picarats. Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two, five in total. The hints on this page are free to open.

Does it unlock anything?

It doesn't give you an item. You get the picarats, and the puzzle counts toward your total.

Versions

  • Nintendo 3DS family: this page covers the 3DS game. The stages are on the top screen, and you choose people on the touch screen.
  • US and UK English versions: the stage and the answer are the same in the US and UK English versions. The UK text differs in some wording, and its Hint 1 is reworded.

The scene around the puzzle

If you quit the puzzle, Tyrone says, "That puzzle still hasn't met its match, eh?"

When it's solved, Tyrone muses, "It's amazing how memories can be triggered. Sometimes they just come out of nowhere," and adds, "My old ringleader was tough...but he was a character! And he knew how to run a circus. I hope I can live up to his example." Layton replies, "Yes, those bonds with old friends can be very powerful. I often find that my present life exists largely because of my past life."
