Puzzle 102 is Dice Crates, a 30-picarat Arrange puzzle at the One-Ring Circus in Monte d'Or, in Chapter 7. Yukkles, the clown with the aching hips, offers it to give your noodle a workout. Four giant dice stand in two stacks of two on the left. You use a crane to move them onto the dais on the right, two on the bottom and two on top, and turn them so the four numbers on the front add up to 22. It works like Puzzle 044, Suit Crates, with dice in place of painted crates.
This page covers story Puzzle 102 in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, the 3DS game (US and UK English). The dice and the answer are the same in the US and UK English versions; quotes use the North American text. If you're after Daily Puzzle 102 or Puzzle 102 from another Layton game, see Wrong Puzzle 102? below.

What Puzzle 102 is
| Name | Dice Crates (US and UK) |
|---|---|
| Type | Arrange (move and turn the dice with a crane) |
| Picarats | 30 |
| Location | One-Ring Circus, Monte d'Or |
| Chapter | Chapter 7 |
| How you start it | Talk to Yukkles |
| Required? | No |
| Previous puzzle number | Puzzle 101, Wonky Wiring (Dromedary Lobby) |
| Next puzzle number | Puzzle 103, Stars of the Stage (Big Top) |
The puzzle reads: "You want to use a crane to shift four giant dice. It seems like a fairly easy task, but there's a catch: you need to arrange the dice in a square so that the four numbers on the front add up to 22." Then it adds: "Use the crane to move the dice over to the dais on the right. You can rotate the dice horizontally in midair." The objective bar says "Make a total of 22!"
The yellow arrow buttons move the crane left and right, the red button lowers the hook to pick up the top die under it or set a die down, and the turning button turns the die on the hook a quarter turn, always the same way. Because the dice turn horizontally, each one only ever shows four of its numbers at the front, and four presses bring it back to where it started. This page calls the dice top-left, bottom-left, top-right and bottom-right by where they stand at the start, the same way the hints do. There's no answer button: the puzzle ends by itself once all four dice are on the dais showing the right numbers.
Puzzle names
| Version | Puzzle name |
|---|---|
| North America | Dice Crates |
| UK | Dice Crates |
| Japanese | サイコロ足し算 (Saikoro Tashizan, "dice addition") |
The name is the same in the US and UK versions. The UK text has a few small wording differences: the question opens "You're looking to use a crane", it spells "mid-air", the hints drop a few commas, and the message at the end is worded slightly differently. The dice and the answer are the same in the US and UK English versions.
Wrong Puzzle 102?
- Daily Puzzle 102 is Police 04, from The Barking Beat set.
- Puzzle 101, Wonky Wiring, is the puzzle before this one, in the Dromedary Lobby. If yours is a broken radio, that's the one you've got.
- Puzzle 103, Stars of the Stage, is the next puzzle, in the Big Top. If yours has two star-shaped stages and cameras, that's the one you've got.
- Puzzle 044, Suit Crates, uses the same crane, also from Yukkles, in Chapter 3. If your crates are painted with card-suit shapes, that's the one you've got.
- Puzzle 102 in another Layton game is a different puzzle. If yours doesn't have four giant dice and a crane, you're in the wrong game.
Where you find it
Chapter 7 opens on the fourth day of the investigation in Monte d'Or, in Layton's Room at the Dromedary, where Emmy asks, "Where should we start today, Professor?" Head to the One-Ring Circus and talk to Yukkles outside the big top.
Yukkles begins, "Phew! It ain't easy bein' a clown, I tell ya. I'm gettin' older, and jumpin' around like a buffoon is startin' to take its toll." Emmy suggests some yoga before bed, and he answers, "What? I don't even like yogurt!" When she tries light jogging instead, he asks, "How about givin' your noodle a workout?" and the puzzle starts.

You don't have to solve it to move on. Yukkles keeps offering it for the rest of Chapter 7, and he's back at the One-Ring Circus with it after the story ends.
When the dice get confusing
- You don't know what numbers you have. Lift each die and press the turning button four times, noting the number that comes to the front each time, the way Hint 1 suggests.
- The turning button does nothing. It only turns a die that's hanging from the hook. Pick one up first.
- You can't reach a bottom die. The crane only lifts the top die of a stack. Move the top one away first.
- All four dice are on the dais but nothing happens. The front numbers don't add up to 22 yet. Pick a die back up and keep turning it.
- You can't find the puzzle. Talk to Yukkles at the One-Ring Circus during Chapter 7.
Hints, one at a time
These are the game's own hints, word for word from the North American version and in the same order. Open only the next one you need. In the game, Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two.
Hint 1: the top-left die
To begin with, you need to find out what numbers you have to work with. Lift each die in turn with the crane, and take note of the numbers on their visible sides.
For instance, the top-left die has 1, 4, 6, and 3 showing.
Hint 2: the top-right die
The top-right die has 2, 1, 5, and 6 showing on its visible sides, so those numbers are available for you to use.
Check all the dice in the same manner until you've worked out a solution!
Hint 3: the bottom-left die
If you rotate the bottom-left die, you can see 2, 4, 5, and 3.
You have to make 22 with only four dice, so you're going to need the higher numbers.
Super Hint: the bottom-right die
The bottom-right die has 2, 4, 5, and 3.
Now that you know what numbers are at your disposal on each die, you just need to calculate which add up to make 22!
Answer and full solution
The answer below names the four numbers, shows every die's sides and gives one order of moves that works. Open it when you're ready.
Show the answer
Answer: two 6s and two 5s, 6 + 6 + 5 + 5 = 22. The top-left and top-right dice show 6, and the bottom-left and bottom-right dice show 5.
The biggest number each die can show is 6 on the top-left die, 6 on the top-right die and 5 on each bottom die. That makes 22 at most, so every die has to show its biggest number. The number of presses below counts from the way each die faces at the start.

- Top-right die: pick it up from the top of the right-hand stack, press the turning button three times so the 6 is at the front, and set it on the left half of the dais.
- Top-left die: pick it up from the top of the left-hand stack, press the turning button twice so the 6 is at the front, and set it on the right half of the dais.
- Bottom-right die: pick it up, press the turning button twice so the 5 is at the front, and set it on top of the die on the left half of the dais.
- Bottom-left die: pick it up, press the turning button twice so the 5 is at the front, and set it on top of the die on the right half of the dais.

Where each die sits on the dais doesn't change the total, so another order works too, as long as every die faces the right way.

The game confirms it: "Well done! To make these four dice add up to 22, you need two 5s and two 6s!"
If it still doesn't work out:
- A die shows the right number on a different side. Only the front counts. Pick it up and keep pressing the turning button until the number faces you.
- The total is 21. One die shows a smaller number than it can. Check each one against the chart above.
- You've lost track of the turns. Four presses bring a die back to the start, so just turn it until the number you need comes round.
Picarats, hints and hint coins
Dice Crates shows 30 picarats when it starts. This puzzle can't be failed. There's no answer to submit, so you get 30 however long you take. When you talk to Yukkles again after leaving the puzzle, he says, "Nobody likes a good puzzle anymore." before the puzzle starts again.
Hints cost hint coins, not picarats. Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two, five in total. The hints on this page are free to open.
Does it unlock anything?
It doesn't give you an item. You get the picarats, and the puzzle counts toward your total.
Versions
- Nintendo 3DS family: this page covers the 3DS game. You press the crane buttons on the touch screen and watch the dice on the top screen.
- US and UK English versions: the dice and the answer are the same in the US and UK English versions. The UK text differs in some wording.
The scene around the puzzle
If you quit the puzzle, Yukkles says, "Nice work! Now maybe you can learn how to dance on a piano with air horns for keys while blindfolded!"
When it's solved, Yukkles says, "There ain't too many folks around that can chew through a puzzle like that! What size shoes do you wear? Do you like red noses?" Emmy answers, "Oh, I'm fine, thank you. I enjoy my job as the professor's assistant." He adds, "Well, if you ever get sick of wearing those ridiculous clothes, just let me know," and Emmy replies, "I'll be sure to do that..."
