Miracle Mask Puzzle 110: Cozy Cabins Hints and Answer

Stuck on Puzzle 110 (Cozy Cabins)? Tanya in Knickknack Alley has a family of five, four hillside cabins at different prices and five sleeping bags to fit in. Open the four hints one at a time and show the answer only when you want it. Arrange puzzle, 30 picarats, Chapter 7.

Puzzle 110 is Cozy Cabins, a 30-picarat Arrange puzzle that Tanya gives you in Knickknack Alley in Monte d'Or, in Chapter 7. A family of five wants the cheapest of four hillside cabins they can all sleep in. Each cabin has a differently shaped floor, and you show your answer by fitting all five sleeping bags into one cabin without overlapping.

This page covers story Puzzle 110 in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, the 3DS game (US and UK English). The cabins and the answer are the same in the US and UK English versions; the UK version gives the prices in pounds. Quotes use the North American text. If you're after Daily Puzzle 110 or Puzzle 110 from another Layton game, see Wrong Puzzle 110? below.

The puzzle reads: "A family of five are visiting some hillside cabins. There are four cabins available, and the prices vary: cabin A costs $200, cabin B costs $400, cabin C costs $300, and cabin D costs $600. The cost is fixed regardless of the number of residents, so they are restricted only by space. What is the cheapest cabin at which the whole family can stay? Give your answer by positioning their sleeping bags inside a cabin so that they all fit. The sleeping bags may not overlap." The objective bar says "Which cabin is cheapest?"

The touch screen shows the four cabin floors side by side, each made of squares in a different shape. All five sleeping bags are the same size, two squares long and one square wide. You drag them into a cabin, turn them to lie across or along, and touch Submit when the whole family is in one cabin.

Wrong Puzzle 110?

  • Daily Puzzle 110 is Flight 05, from the Aerial View set.
  • Puzzle 109, Fishy Triangle, is the puzzle before this one, also in Knickknack Alley. If yours has a paper goldfish to cut, that's the one you've got.
  • Puzzle 106, Confusion Cubed, comes from Tanya's daughter, Cookie, who has wandered off on the same day. If yours has six maze panels with a car and a flag, that's the one you've got.
  • Puzzle 111, Holiday Snaps, is the next puzzle, on the City Hall Steps.
  • Puzzle 110 in another Layton game is a different puzzle. If yours doesn't show four cabins and five sleeping bags, you're in the wrong game.

Where you find it

Chapter 7 opens on the fourth day of the investigation in Monte d'Or. From the start of the chapter, Tanya is in Knickknack Alley, the narrow street of shops, standing by the crates of vegetables in front of the shop on the left. She's there by day until your objective reads "Speak to Chief Sheffield!" Later, once your objective reads "Meet Bloom at the Racetrack!", she's in the Merchant District at night instead.

Tanya sighs, "Where did my daughter wander off to? Ever since we left the countryside, I just can't seem to keep tabs on her!" Emmy says, "There certainly is a lot around here to distract a child." Tanya explains, "She takes after her father. He simply adores puzzles. He would often give her puzzles like these to keep her attention." and the puzzle starts.

Knickknack Alley: a narrow street of shops with a toy stall on the right, a gold ring by the crates of vegetables in front of the shop on the left with a plate reading Tanya, Puzzle 110, three numbered hint-coin markers at an upper-left window, on the stall counter and on the stall's roof bracket, and a ring marked Zoom on the wall to the right of the stall
Illustration of Knickknack Alley by day. The gold ring marks Tanya; the numbers mark three hint coins, and Zoom marks the spot with three more.

Knickknack Alley has six hint coins. Three are in the normal view: in the upper-left window, in the red bucket and on the decoration on a shop roof. The other three, in the window at the top center, in a container and on the neon sign, are in the zoomed-in view, so zoom in to find them. If you meet Tanya in the Merchant District at night instead, that street has four hint coins, all in the normal view.

Each coin can be collected only once, so any coins you picked up on earlier visits are already gone.

You don't have to solve it to move on. After the story ends, Tanya is back in Knickknack Alley by day and in the Merchant District at night.

When the family won't fit

  • You can't get five bags into the cheapest cabin. Hint 2 is about exactly that, so open it before you spend longer shuffling bags.
  • You fitted the whole family in and still got "Too bad." Fitting everyone in isn't enough. Read the question again, as the wrong-answer message suggests, and see Hint 3.
  • A bag won't go in. Turn it so it lies the other way. The corners and nooks are the places to fill first, as Hint 1 says.
  • You can't find the puzzle. Talk to Tanya in Knickknack Alley by day, or in the Merchant District at night later in Chapter 7.

Hints, one at a time

These are the game's own hints, word for word from the North American version and in the same order. Open only the next one you need. In the game, Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two.

Hint 1: how to try

Rotate the sleeping bags, move them around, and try as many different combinations as you can. The key is to start with the nooks and corners.

Hint 2: the cheap cabins

Try as you like, you will only be able to fit four family members into the cabins that cost $200 and $300. It's a shame, since they're so cheap!

Hint 3: the big cabin

Did you manage to fit the whole family snugly into cabin D?

Well done if you did, but remember that using all the space available isn't the aim here!

Super Hint: the goal

You can fit the whole family into both cabins B and D, so both are correct!

Or so you might think... Remember the main goal. You're looking for the cheapest cabin that they can sleep in.

Answer and full solution

The answer below names the cabin, shows one way to fit the five sleeping bags into it and explains why the other cabins are wrong. Open it when you're ready.

Show the answer

Answer: cabin B, at $400. Put all five sleeping bags in cabin B and touch Submit.

Why B: cabins A ($200) and C ($300) hold only four bags however you arrange them. Cabins B ($400) and D ($600) both hold five, and B is the cheaper of the two.

One way to fit the bags into cabin B: cabin B has a single square sticking up at the top, two full rows of four squares below it, and one more square at each end of the bottom row.

  1. Stand one bag upright in the square at the top, so it reaches down into the first full row.
  2. Lay one bag across the two left-hand squares of the first full row.
  3. Stand one bag upright in the left-hand column, filling the left end of the second full row and the square below it.
  4. Stand one bag upright in the right-hand column the same way, filling the right end of the second full row and the square below it.
  5. Lay the last bag across the two middle squares of the second full row.

That leaves one square empty, at the right end of the first full row. Other arrangements work too; what matters is that all five bags are in cabin B.

Two cabin floor plans side by side, labelled Cabin B, $400 and Cabin D, $600, each with five sleeping bags fitted inside without overlapping; in cabin B one square at the right end of the upper full row is left empty
Illustration: five bags fit in cabin B and in cabin D. Cabin B is the cheaper one.
The finished puzzle: on the top screen, the row of cabins at night with a light on in one window; on the touch screen, all five sleeping bags fitted into cabin B, with cabins A, C and D empty
Illustration of the family settled in cabin B for the night.

The game confirms it: "Correct! The answer was cabin B. The only cabins that the whole family can fit in are cabins B and D, and B is the cheaper of the two. If only they could sleep standing up, maybe they'd be able to stay in an even cheaper one?"

If it still doesn't work out:

  • You submitted cabin D. Five bags fit there, but it costs $600. Move the family to cabin B.
  • One bag is left over in cabin B. Start with the square at the top and the two squares at the bottom corners, then fill the middle, as in the steps above.

Picarats, hints and hint coins

Cozy Cabins shows 30 picarats when it starts. The puzzle can award 30, 27 or 24 picarats. Wrong answers may reduce the picarat value. A wrong answer brings the message "Too bad. Maybe you can try reading the question again in case you missed something..." If you quit, Tanya says, "It's my fault for spoiling Cookie." When you come back to try again, she says, "Here's a puzzle my husband gave Cookie."

Hints cost hint coins, not picarats. Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two, five in total. The hints on this page are free to open.

Does it unlock anything?

It doesn't give you an item. You get the picarats, and the puzzle counts toward your total.

Versions

  • Nintendo 3DS family: this page covers the 3DS game. The family and the cabins are on the top screen, and you place the sleeping bags on the touch screen.
  • US and UK English versions: same cabins, same answer and the same name. The UK version prices the cabins at £200, £400, £300 and £600, and the wording differs in small details.

The scene around the puzzle

When it's solved, Tanya says, "I know that it can be tough on a child when you move to a new city. I told her to wait for me at the Reunion Inn if we got separated. I hope she will."

Layton asks, "Would you like us to go look for her?" Tanya answers, "Oh no, I can't put you to all that trouble. She's got a good sense of direction, and it's pretty safe here. She'll be fine." She adds, "And no offense, but I've always told her to not talk to strangers." Cookie, meanwhile, gives you Puzzle 106 on the same day.
