Puzzle 143 is Flowery Footpath 2, a 60-picarat Arrange puzzle in The Ringmaster's House, one of Layton's Challenges. Another faded mosaic is being replaced. Eight new pieces, each already made of several tiles, have to fill a 12 x 12 frame so the old pattern of five flowers shows again. You can move and turn the pieces, and the pattern doesn't have to face the same way as the old one.
This page covers bonus Puzzle 143 in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, the 3DS game (US and UK English). The pieces and the answer are the same in the US and UK English versions; quotes use the North American text. If you're after Daily Puzzle 143, the first Flowery Footpath, or Puzzle 143 from another Layton game, see Wrong Puzzle 143? below.

What Puzzle 143 is
| Name | Flowery Footpath 2 (US and UK) |
|---|---|
| Type | Arrange |
| Picarats | 60 |
| Location | Layton's Challenges, The Ringmaster's House (Bonuses menu) |
| Chapter | None. It's a bonus puzzle outside the story |
| How you unlock it | Finish all ten plays of the Rabbit Show minigame |
| Required? | No, it's optional |
| Previous puzzle number | Puzzle 142, Spinning Maize 3 (The Ringmaster's House) |
| Next puzzle number | Puzzle 144, Grand Hall Rescue 2 (The Ringmaster's House) |
The puzzle reads: "Here's another mosaic scheduled to be replaced, and once again the new tiles are in larger pieces that need arranging. Although the pattern is the same as the old one, it doesn't have to be oriented the same way. You can move and rotate the pieces, so see if you can give a helping hand and fit them all into the square nicely." The objective bar says "Replace the tiles!"
It works like Puzzle 059, Flowery Footpath, with new piece shapes and a new pattern. You drag the pieces into the frame and turn them, then submit. The eight pieces fill the 144 squares of the frame exactly, and the faded mosaic on the top screen shows the pattern they have to make.
Puzzle names
| Version | Puzzle name |
|---|---|
| North America | Flowery Footpath 2 |
| UK | Flowery Footpath 2 |
| Japanese | タイルのナゾ2 (Tairu no Nazo 2, roughly "the tile puzzle 2") |
The name is the same in the US and UK versions. The UK question opens differently: "This mosaic has become worn and faded, so the locals have decided to replace it." The UK hints differ only in small details, and the pieces and the answer are the same in the US and UK English versions. In Japanese it's タイルのナゾ2.
Wrong Puzzle 143?
- Daily Puzzle 143 is Alchemy 09, from The Alchemist's Lair set.
- Puzzle 059, Flowery Footpath, is the first mosaic, from Doug in Old Towne during the Chapter 4 flashback. Its pieces and pattern are different.
- Puzzle 143 in another Layton game is a different puzzle. If yours doesn't show flower mosaic pieces and a 12 x 12 frame, you're in the wrong game.
Where you find it
Puzzle 143 is one of the fifteen bonus puzzles in Layton's Challenges, which you open from the Bonuses section. The challenges are split into five houses of three puzzles each, and The Ringmaster's House holds Puzzles 142, 143 and 144. Flowery Footpath 2 is the second puzzle in that house.
The Ringmaster's House opens when you finish the Rabbit Show, the minigame in the Professor's trunk where you teach the rabbit to act. Once all ten plays are done, the game tells you, "The Ringmaster's House has been added to Layton's Challenges." The Miracle Mask minigames page has help with every play.
Piece letters and square numbers used on this page
The game's hints describe the pieces by their shapes. This page also gives each piece a letter, A to H, as shown below. Squares in the frame are counted from the top-left corner: columns 1 to 12 from left to right and rows 1 to 12 from top to bottom.

When the mosaic won't come together
- You started in the middle. The pieces are easier to place from the corners inward, the way Hint 1 suggests.
- The pieces fit but the game says "Try again." Filling the frame isn't enough. The flowers have to line up so the whole pattern matches the old mosaic.
- You're trying to copy the top screen exactly. The pattern can face any way, so a turned version of the mosaic also counts.
- A piece won't sit flat in a corner. Turn it. Every piece can be turned, and most only fit one gap in one direction.
Hints, one at a time
These are the game's own hints, word for word from the North American version and in the same order. Open only the next one you need. In the game, Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two.
Hint 1: where to start
It's very hard to tell which piece of the pattern goes where.
Why don't you start off by working out which of the pieces fit in the corners and work inward from there?
Hint 2: the top-left corner
There's a section shaped like a fat letter T. Rotate it so that the T stands upright--albeit looking top heavy--then place it in the top-left corner.
Hint 3: the left-hand side
Look for a rectangular piece with a single tile sticking out on one side. It looks like a boot if you rotate it the correct way. Place it so the sole of the boot sits in the bottom-left corner.
There's only one piece that will fit between this one and the one you placed in Hint 2. If you find it, the left-hand side of the mosaic is complete.
Super Hint: the right-hand corners
See the rectangular piece with two tiles sticking out on the same edge? It should look vaguely like a power socket. Rotate it so that those tiles face to the left and place it in the top-right corner.
Now look for the piece shaped like the letter E. Rotate it so the flat edge is on the bottom, and put it in the bottom-right corner. The rest is up to you!
Answer and full solution
The answer below says where every piece goes and which way it faces, shows the build in four stages, and shows the finished mosaic. Open it when you're ready.
Show the answer
The answer: A in the top-left corner, B under it, C in the bottom-left corner, D in the top-right corner and E in the bottom-right corner, then F, G and H fill the middle. The finished mosaic faces the same way as the old one on the top screen.
| Order | Piece | Turn from the start | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | A, the fat T | Quarter turn clockwise | Top left: columns 1 to 5, rows 1 to 4, the stem of the T pointing down |
| 2 | C, the boot | Half turn | Bottom left: columns 1 to 4, rows 8 to 12, the toe sticking out to the right along the bottom row |
| 3 | B | Quarter turn counterclockwise | Left side, between A and C: columns 1 to 6, rows 4 to 8 |
| 4 | D, the power socket | Half turn | Top right: columns 9 to 12, rows 1 to 5, the two tabs facing left |
| 5 | E, the letter E | Quarter turn counterclockwise | Bottom right: columns 8 to 12, rows 9 to 12, the flat edge along the bottom |
| 6 | F | None | Top middle: columns 5 to 9, rows 1 to 6 |
| 7 | G | Quarter turn clockwise | Right side: columns 7 to 12, rows 5 to 9 |
| 8 | H | Half turn | Bottom middle: columns 4 to 7, rows 7 to 12 |

The game says: "Well done! This flowery footpath may be even prettier than the last one!"
If it still doesn't work out:
- B won't fit between A and C. Check that A's stem points down and that C's toe points right along the bottom row.
- The middle won't close up. F, G and H each fit only one gap. Try each of them in each gap, turning it until its edges line up with the flowers around it.
- You built a turned version. That's allowed. The same layout turned a quarter or half turn also counts, as long as every piece keeps its place in the pattern.
Picarats, hints and hint coins
Flowery Footpath 2 shows 60 picarats when it starts.
Hints cost hint coins, not picarats. Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two, five in total. There are no hint coins to find in Layton's Challenges, so you'll spend coins saved from the story, or you can use the free hints on this page.
Does it unlock anything?
No. It doesn't give you an item. You get the picarats, and it counts toward the fifteen Layton's Challenges. Solve all fifteen and the game congratulates you: "Congratulations! You solved all 15 of Layton's Challenges!"
Versions
- Nintendo 3DS family: this page covers the 3DS game. The old mosaic is on the top screen, and you move and turn the pieces on the touch screen.
- US and UK English versions: the pieces and the answer are the same. The UK question and the UK message for a correct answer are worded differently.
The scene around the puzzle
There's no story scene for the bonus puzzles. The top screen looks down on a brick street with the faded mosaic set into it and two onlookers at the corners. Once you've solved it, the mosaic shows fresh green squares and the five flowers stand out clearly.
