Puzzle 144 is Grand Hall Rescue 2, a 60-picarat Select puzzle in The Ringmaster's House, one of Layton's Challenges. A girl is hanging near the bottom of a tall hall criss-crossed with ropes. Layton slides down from the top on a chandelier, and at each lettered jump point you decide whether he drops to the rope below or keeps going. There are seventeen jump points, from A to Q.
This page covers bonus Puzzle 144 in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, the 3DS game (US and UK English). The hall and the route are the same in the US and UK English versions; quotes use the North American text. If you're after Daily Puzzle 144, the first Grand Hall Rescue, or Puzzle 144 from another Layton game, see Wrong Puzzle 144? below.

The puzzle reads: "A girl's been left hanging in a trapped hall! Is this the work of the Masked Gentleman? Slide your way down the ropes drawn across the hall and save her! There are only a few places where you can jump from rope to rope. Use the panel on the right of the Touch Screen to view the whole hall, and hurry to the girl's rescue!" The objective bar says "Save the girl!"
It plays like Puzzle 133, Grand Hall Rescue, where Layton slides down to save Luke. Tap Rescue the girl! to send Layton off, then tap Drop down! when he reaches a jump point you want to use. If he slides past a jump point, the chance is gone.
How the ropes work
- Layton only goes down. He slides along each rope toward its lower end.
- Jump points are lettered. At each green letter he can drop straight down onto the rope below. Anywhere else, he can't.
- Knots join ropes. Where a rope ends in a knot that holds another rope, he carries on along the next rope.
- Loose ends are the end of the run. If a rope ends without another rope to carry on along, the rescue fails.
- The girl is near the bottom. He has to arrive on her rope above her, so he slides into her.
Puzzle names
| Version | Puzzle name |
|---|---|
| North America | Grand Hall Rescue 2 |
| UK | Grand Hall Rescue 2 |
| Japanese | 大ホールの罠2 (Dai Hōru no Wana 2, "the great hall trap 2") |
The name is the same in the US and UK versions. The UK text says "drop" where the US text says "jump", and its question opens: "A girl's been left hanging in the Grand Hall!" In Japanese it's 大ホールの罠2.
Wrong Puzzle 144?
- Daily Puzzle 144 is Sailing 09, from the Perilous Voyage set.
- Puzzle 133, Grand Hall Rescue, is the first rope puzzle, in the Grand Hall in Chapter 7. There Layton slides down to save Luke.
- Puzzle 144 in another Layton game is a different puzzle. If yours doesn't show Layton sliding down ropes in a hall, you're in the wrong game.
Where you find it
Puzzle 144 is one of the fifteen bonus puzzles in Layton's Challenges, which you open from the Bonuses section. The challenges are split into five houses of three puzzles each, and The Ringmaster's House holds Puzzles 142, 143 and 144. Grand Hall Rescue 2 is the third puzzle in that house.
The Ringmaster's House opens when you finish the Rabbit Show, the minigame in the Professor's trunk where you teach the rabbit to act. Once all ten plays are done, the game tells you, "The Ringmaster's House has been added to Layton's Challenges." The Miracle Mask minigames page has help with every play.
When Layton misses the girl
- He jumped at the very first letter. A looks like a short cut, but Hint 1 warns that from there you'll never reach the girl.
- You can't see where a rope goes. The screen only shows part of the hall. Use the panel on the right of the Touch Screen to look over the whole hall before you start.
- He ran off the end of a rope. Some ropes stop in mid-air. Trace each rope to its lower end before you pick a jump point on it.
- He landed below the girl. He needs to land on her rope above her. Landing past her doesn't count.
Hints, one at a time
These are the game's own hints, word for word from the North American version and in the same order. Open only the next one you need. In the game, Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two.
Hint 1: the first jump point
You mustn't jump off from point A, the first jump point. If you jump here, you'll never reach the girl.
Hint 2: the second jump point
Jump off from the second jump point: B.
There's still a long way to go. Make sure to scan the whole hall using the panel on the Touch Screen in order to work out the route you'll need to take.
Hint 3: after B
Once you've jumped from point B, you'll need to jump from point F. Now you should only need to make a few more decisions, even though you're barely halfway through the trap.
As far as solving the puzzle goes, though, you're almost there. Good luck!
Super Hint: after F
After jumping from F, you'll want to jump from I next.
Victory is not far off now. The rest is all up to you!
Answer and full solution
The answer below shows the whole route on the hall map, stage by stage. Open it when you're ready.
Show the answer
The answer: jump at B, F, I, O and Q, and let Layton slide past every other letter. After Q he lands on the girl's rope just above her.

Step by step:
- Jump at B. Layton starts at the top left. Let him slide past A, then drop at B.
- Jump at F. He lands on a rope running down to the left. Slide past E and drop at F.
- Jump at I. He lands on a rope running down to the right. Slide past H to the knot at the end, carry on along the next rope, and drop at I just after the knot.
- Jump at O. He lands just above K. Slide past K to the knot, carry on along the next rope, and drop at O.
- Jump at Q. Slide past P and drop at Q.
- The girl. He lands on her rope just above her and slides into her.
The game says: "Correct! Congratulations! You've saved the day! She seems quite charmed by her dashing rescuer."
If it still doesn't work out:
- He jumped at A. Let him slide past it. B is the first jump to take.
- He jumped at E or H. Those come just before F and the knot. Wait for F, then for I after the knot.
- He jumped at K. K is right after his landing point, so it's easy to tap too early. Wait until he's past the knot and reaches O.
- He jumped at P. From P he lands on the girl's rope below her. Wait for Q.
Picarats, hints and hint coins
Grand Hall Rescue 2 shows 60 picarats when it starts.
Hints cost hint coins, not picarats. Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two, five in total. There are no hint coins to find in Layton's Challenges, so you'll spend coins saved from the story, or you can use the free hints on this page.
Does it unlock anything?
No. It doesn't give you an item. You get the picarats, and it counts toward the fifteen Layton's Challenges. Solve all fifteen and the game congratulates you: "Congratulations! You solved all 15 of Layton's Challenges!"
Versions
- Nintendo 3DS family: this page covers the 3DS game. The hall scrolls on the top screen, and the buttons and the hall panel are on the touch screen.
- US and UK English versions: the hall, the letters and the route are the same. The UK text says "drop" and "drop point" where the US text says "jump" and "jump point".
The scene around the puzzle
There's no story scene for the bonus puzzles. The top screen follows Layton down the hall on his chandelier, the same kind of view as the first Grand Hall Rescue, where he went after Luke.
