Miracle Mask Puzzle 146: Tilt to Traverse 2 Hints and Answer

Stuck on Puzzle 146, Tilt to Traverse 2? Tilt your 3DS to slide floating crates through a canal maze and make a path that gets the girl across to her friend. Open the four hints one at a time and show the answer only when you want it. Layton's Challenges, The Reunion House, 60 picarats.

Puzzle 146 is Tilt to Traverse 2, a 60-picarat Maze Escape puzzle in The Reunion House, one of Layton's Challenges. A girl exploring an old canal system has ended up on the wrong side of the room from her friend. She can only cross the water on floating crates, and you move the crates by tilting your Nintendo 3DS. Your job is to slide them into a path that gets her across to her friend in the bottom-right corner.

This page covers bonus Puzzle 146 in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, the 3DS game (US and UK English). The canals and the answer are the same in the US and UK English versions; quotes use the North American text. If you're after Daily Puzzle 146, the first Tilt to Traverse, or Puzzle 146 from another Layton game, see Wrong Puzzle 146? below.

Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask Puzzle 146 Tilt to Traverse 2: on the top screen, a maze of ochre brick walkways and pale blue canals seen from above inside a wooden frame, with a gray-haired girl's face in the top-left corner, her brown-haired friend's face in the bottom-right corner, four wooden crates floating in the canals and four dark round holes in the water; on the touch screen, an ochre panel with four brown arrow buttons around a drawing of the girl's face

The puzzle reads: "One day, a girl went off exploring an abandoned canal system with her friend. Before she knew it, she was stranded on the other side of the room. But fret not! You should be able to make a path to help her to the other side using the walkways and crates floating in the water."

It goes on: "Tilt your Nintendo 3DS system backward, forward, left, or right to make the crates slide in that direction. Watch out for the dark holes, though--if a crate floats over one, it will stay stuck there." The objective bar says "Get the girl to her friend!"

It works like Puzzle 097, Tilt to Traverse, with a new maze. The floor is twelve squares wide and nine high. The girl starts in the top-left corner and her friend waits in the bottom-right corner. Four crates float in the canals. When you tilt the system, every crate that can move slides as far as it can in that direction, until it hits a walkway or another crate. Tilting backward, away from you, slides the crates up the top screen, and tilting forward slides them down. The game's hints call these directions up and down, and so does this page.

To move the girl, tap the arrows on the touch screen. She walks along the walkways and can step onto a crate, but she can't walk into open water. She doesn't slide when you tilt, only the crates do.

The canal maze seen from directly above at the start: ochre walkways and pale blue canals on a twelve by nine grid with four wooden crates; labels mark the girl in the top-left corner and her friend in the bottom-right corner, and teal rings circle the four dark holes in the water, one of them labelled Dark hole
Illustration of the floor at the start. The teal rings mark the four dark holes.

The four dark holes are the catch. A crate that slides over one drops in, plugs it and stays stuck there for good, and the girl can walk across a plugged hole like a walkway. There's no wrong answer to submit, but if a crate gets stuck where you still need it, tap Restart and the crates and the girl go back to where they started.

The canals and the answer are the same in the US and UK English versions.

Wrong Puzzle 146?

  • Daily Puzzle 146 is Alchemy 10, from The Alchemist's Lair set.
  • Puzzle 097, Tilt to Traverse, is the first tilting puzzle, in the Chapter 6 story. There young Hershel has to cross six stepping stones to reach Randall, and it's worth 40 picarats.
  • Puzzle 145, Merry-Go-Tiles 2, is the puzzle before this one, also in The Reunion House.
  • Puzzle 147, That Rings a Bell 2, is the next puzzle, the last one in The Reunion House.
  • Puzzle 146 in another Layton game is a different puzzle. If yours doesn't have you tilting crates across canals, you're in the wrong game.

Where you find it

Puzzle 146 is one of the fifteen bonus puzzles in Layton's Challenges, which you open from the Bonuses section. The challenges are split into five houses of three puzzles each, and The Reunion House holds Puzzles 145, 146 and 147. Tilt to Traverse 2 is the second puzzle in that house.

The Reunion House opens once you've finished the story. You don't need to find anything else first.

When the crates won't line up

  • The girl can't leave the corner. She needs two crates to get across to the central walkway, the long walkway in the middle of the maze. Hint 2 gives the first three tilts.
  • You're not sure which way is up. Up means tipping the top of the system away from you. The crates slide up the top screen.
  • The crate to the right of the start fell into a hole. Hint 1 warns about this one. You need it for the first path, so tap Restart.
  • A crate slid too far. Crates always slide until something stops them. Use a walkway or another crate as a stopper, or plug a hole first so a crate stops beside it.
  • The girl won't move. She only walks onto walkways, crates and plugged holes. Tilting never moves her; use the arrows on the touch screen.

Hints, one at a time

These are the game's own hints, word for word from the North American version and in the same order. Open only the next one you need. In the game, Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two.

Hint 1

First, you need to use two crates to form a path to the central walkway.

Just make sure that the crate directly to the right of the starting position doesn't get sucked in by a hole.

Hint 2

Let's start from the beginning. Tilt your Nintendo 3DS system in the following ways to form a path: down, left, then down again.

You should now have a path to the central walkway!

Hint 3

Have you moved the girl onto the central walkway? Now tilt the Nintendo 3DS in such a way as to put the top-right crate into the hole.

With that crate fixed in position, you should be able to use the other crates to lead the girl to her friend.

Super Hint

Once you have the top-right crate in the hole, move another into the hole next to the central walkway. You can use one of the two crates on the top left.

Lastly, move the crate on the bottom half of the screen toward the top right so that it's positioned next to the crate you just fixed in place. The two crates should make a path across to the last walkway, bridging the gap between the girl and her friend!

Answer and full solution

The answer below takes fourteen moves: twelve tilts and two walks. It shows the canals after each step. Open it when you're ready.

Show the answer

Answer: tilt down, left, down, then walk the girl to the central walkway. Then tilt right, up, left, right, up, right, down, right, up, and walk her across to her friend.

Tilt to Traverse 2 answer, move by move
MoveWhat to doWhat happens
1Tilt downThe crate next to the girl's corner and the crate to the right of the start both slide down.
2Tilt leftOne crate stops just below the girl's walkway on the left edge, and another stops in the canal left of the middle.
3Tilt downThe middle crate drops one square. The two crates now bridge the gaps to the central walkway.
4Walk the girlShe goes down the left side, across both crates and up onto the central walkway.
5Tilt rightThe crate on the right side goes back to the top-right corner of its canal.
6Tilt upThat crate rises to the top row, right next to the top-right hole.
7Tilt leftIt slides into the top-right hole and plugs it.
8Tilt rightThe two crates from the top left slide over to the canal left of the central walkway.
9Tilt upBoth crates move up that canal. The front crate reaches the top row, and the other stops one square directly below it.
10Tilt rightThe top crate stops against the plugged hole.
11Tilt downThat crate drops into the hole next to the central walkway and plugs it.
12Tilt rightThe crate in the bottom half slides right to the bottom of the canal beside the central walkway.
13Tilt upIt rises and stops right next to the hole you just plugged.
14Walk the girlShe crosses the plugged hole and that crate to the last walkway, then follows it down to her friend.

Moves 1 to 3. Tilt down, left and down again, as Hint 2 says.

Three panels showing the canals after each of the first three tilts, down, left and down, each labelled with its move number and an arrow; after the third tilt one crate sits below the girl's walkway on the left edge and another sits in the canal just left of the middle
Illustration of the canals after moves 1, 2 and 3.

Move 4. Walk the girl down the left edge, over the first crate, right along the walkway, over the second crate and up onto the central walkway.

The canals from directly above after move 3: a gold line traces the girl's walk from the top-left corner down the left edge, over a crate, right along a walkway, over a second crate and up onto the central walkway
Illustration: after move 3. The gold line is the girl's walk to the central walkway.

Moves 5 to 13. With the girl waiting on the central walkway, tilt right, up, left, right, up, right, down, right and up. Move 7 plugs the top-right hole, move 11 plugs the hole next to the central walkway, and move 13 parks the last crate beside it.

Nine panels showing the canals after each tilt from move 5 to move 13, each labelled with its move number, direction and an arrow; the crates plug the top-right hole on move 7 and the hole next to the central walkway on move 11, and the last panel shows a crate beside that plugged hole
Illustration of the canals after each tilt from move 5 to move 13.

Move 14. Walk the girl right from the central walkway, across the plugged hole and the crate beside it, along the last walkway to the right edge and down to her friend.

The canals from directly above after move 13: a gold line traces the girl's walk from the central walkway across a plugged hole and a crate, along a walkway to the right edge and down to her friend in the bottom-right corner
Illustration: after move 13. The gold line is the girl's last walk to her friend.

When she reaches her friend, the puzzle is solved. The game says: "Hurray! She made it back to her friend safely! But really, it's not a good idea for them to be exploring such a dangerous place..."

The finished puzzle: on the top screen, the canals with two plugged holes and the crates in place, the girl's face just above her friend's face in the bottom-right corner and a Puzzle Solved banner across the middle; on the touch screen, the ochre panel with the four arrow buttons
Illustration of the finished puzzle, with the girl back beside her friend.

If it still doesn't work out:

  • The crates don't end up where the table says. Check that a tilt didn't register twice, and that you didn't tilt before the girl finished her walk on move 4. Tap Restart and go through the moves again.
  • A crate dropped into the wrong hole. It can't be moved again, so tap Restart.
  • The girl stops partway on move 14. Check that the hole next to the central walkway is plugged and that a crate sits right beside it, on the side toward the last walkway.

Picarats, hints and hint coins

Tilt to Traverse 2 shows 60 picarats when it starts. This puzzle can't be failed: there's no wrong answer to submit, and tapping Restart just puts the crates back, so solving it always awards 60 picarats.

Hints cost hint coins, not picarats. Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two, five in total. There are no hint coins to find in Layton's Challenges, so you'll spend coins saved from the story, or you can use the free hints on this page.

Does it unlock anything?

No. It doesn't give you an item. You get the picarats, and it counts toward the fifteen Layton's Challenges. Solve all fifteen and the game congratulates you: "Congratulations! You solved all 15 of Layton's Challenges!"

Versions

  • Nintendo 3DS family: this page covers the 3DS game. The canals appear on the top screen. You slide the crates by tilting the system, and you move the girl with the arrows on the touch screen.
  • US and UK English versions: the canals and the answer are the same. The UK puzzle text and Super Hint are worded a little differently.

The scene around the puzzle

There's no story scene for the bonus puzzles. The top screen shows the canal maze inside a wooden frame, with leafy trees on either side, and the touch screen shows the girl's face between the four arrow buttons. Once she's across, the game's closing line adds that it's "not a good idea for them to be exploring such a dangerous place".
