All 10 Magic Bean locations

There are 10 soft soil spots for Magic Beans in Ocarina of Time 3D. Buy the beans from the Bean Seller at the entrance to Zora’s River as young Link, plant one in each spot, then come back as adult Link and ride the leaf that grew there. Five of the rides lead to a Piece of Heart, and nine of the spots also give a Gold Skulltula when you empty bugs onto them.

Where to buy Magic Beans

The Bean Seller sits at the entrance to Zora’s River, next to the first soft soil spot. Talk to him as young Link: “Chomp chomp chomp... How about some Magic Beans? They aren’t selling very well...” He has ten beans, and every one costs 10 Rupees more than the last.

Rupees102030405060708090100

All ten cost 550 Rupees. The Child’s Wallet holds 99 Rupees, so you need the Adult’s Wallet (10 Gold Skulltula tokens at the House of Skulltula) to pay for the tenth bean. If you are short, he says “You don’t have enough money. I can’t sell them to you.” After the tenth bean he is sold out.

How to plant and ride a Magic Bean

  1. Put the beans on a button. On the Items screen, set the Magic Beans to X, Y, I or II.
  2. Find soft soil. It is a small mound of loose earth. If you check it, the game says: “You see a small mound of soft soil here.”
  3. Plant it as young Link. Stand on the soil and use the beans. A small sprout appears.
  4. Come back as adult Link. After you pull the Master Sword, the sprout has grown into a large plant with a leaf platform.
  5. Ride the leaf. Step onto it and it flies along a set route. Jump off when it reaches the place you want.

Plant beans as young Link whenever you pass a spot. The crater and Colossus spots come later: learn the Bolero of Fire and the Requiem of Spirit as adult Link, return to the past, and warp there to plant the last two.

Each soft soil spot

Spot 5, the Graveyard: plant here as young Link, then ride the leaf up to the ledge and break the crate for the Piece of Heart.

1. Zora’s River

The soil is right next to the Bean Seller at the entrance to Zora’s River. Buy a bean and plant it on the spot. See it on the map.

No Gold Skulltula comes out of this soil. As adult Link, no Piece of Heart or Gold Skulltula needs the ride.

2. Kokiri Forest

The soil is beside the Kokiri Shop in the village. See it on the map.

Empty a bottle of bugs onto the soil and a Gold Skulltula comes out. As adult Link, no Piece of Heart or Gold Skulltula needs the ride.

3. Lost Woods, by the bridge

The soil is in the Lost Woods clearing beside the bridge that links Kokiri Forest and Hyrule Field. See it on the map.

Empty a bottle of bugs onto the soil and a Gold Skulltula comes out. As adult Link, no Piece of Heart or Gold Skulltula needs the ride.

4. Lost Woods, Deku Theater

The soil is outside the Deku Theater. From the Kokiri Forest entrance go right, left, right, left, left (normal mode). See it on the map.

Empty a bottle of bugs onto the soil and a Gold Skulltula comes out. At night, the sprout takes adult Link to a Gold Skulltula on the upper ledge above the Deku Theater entrance.

5. Graveyard

The soil is in Kakariko Graveyard, on the grass below the high ledge. See it on the map.

Empty a bottle of bugs onto the soil and a Gold Skulltula comes out. As adult Link, ride up to the high ledge and break the crate there for a Piece of Heart.

6. Death Mountain Trail

The soil is near the entrance to Dodongo’s Cavern. See it on the map.

Empty a bottle of bugs onto the soil and a Gold Skulltula comes out. As adult Link, the ride can take you to the Piece of Heart on the wall above the cavern entrance. You can also drop onto that ledge from the trail above.

7. Death Mountain Crater

The soil is next to the Bolero of Fire warp pad. To get here as young Link, learn the Bolero of Fire as adult Link, return to the past and play it. See it on the map.

Empty a bottle of bugs onto the soil and a Gold Skulltula comes out. As adult Link, the leaf reaches the Piece of Heart on top of the volcano in the middle of the crater. A tricky Hover Boots jump is the only other way.

8. Lake Hylia

The soil is next to the Lakeside Laboratory. See it on the map.

Empty a bottle of bugs onto the soil and a Gold Skulltula comes out. As adult Link, the leaf reaches the Piece of Heart on the roof of the Lakeside Laboratory. From the roof, climb the ladder to reach it.

9. Gerudo Valley

The soil is on the low riverbank under the bridge, at the very bottom of the valley. Do not stop on the higher ledge with the Piece of Heart crate; drop all the way down to the river. See it on the map.

Empty a bottle of bugs onto the soil and a Gold Skulltula comes out. As adult Link, no Piece of Heart or Gold Skulltula needs the ride.

10. Desert Colossus

The soil is near the Spirit Temple entrance. To get here as young Link, learn the Requiem of Spirit at the Colossus as adult Link, return to the past and play it. See it on the map.

Empty a bottle of bugs onto the soil and a Gold Skulltula comes out. As adult Link, the leaf reaches the Piece of Heart on top of the arch near the Spirit Temple and, at night, the Gold Skulltula on the raised plateau (the Longshot also reaches that one).

Which rides are worth it

These rewards are on the adult rides. The Graveyard ledge, the Lakeside Laboratory roof and the arch at the Desert Colossus are the main reasons to plant beans.

Bugs and Gold Skulltulas

Catch bugs in a bottle (they hide under rocks and in some patches of grass) and empty the bottle onto soft soil as young Link. A Gold Skulltula climbs out of nine of the ten spots. Zora’s River is the one with no Gold Skulltula. You do not have to plant a bean first.

If something goes wrong

  • You can’t plant the bean. You are adult Link. Go back to the past and plant it as young Link.
  • There is no leaf as adult Link. No bean was planted in that spot as young Link.
  • The seller won’t sell you a bean. You do not have enough Rupees, or your wallet is too small for the next price. After ten beans he is sold out.
  • You can’t reach the crater or the Colossus as young Link. Learn the Bolero of Fire and the Requiem of Spirit as adult Link first, then play them as young Link.
  • You are playing Master Quest. The world is mirrored, but the ten soft soil spots are at the same landmarks. Swap every left and right in this page’s directions.

For the Lost Woods route, see Saria’s Song. The Gold Skulltula and Piece of Heart pins for every area are on the Ocarina of Time 3D map, and the beans are in the item list.

Where do you buy Magic Beans?

Can you plant Magic Beans as adult Link?

No. Plant them as young Link. When you come back as adult Link, the sprout has grown into a leaf platform that you can ride.

Why can’t I buy the last Magic Bean?

The tenth bean costs 100 Rupees, and the Child’s Wallet only holds 99. Get the Adult’s Wallet first. It is the reward for 10 Gold Skulltula tokens in the House of Skulltula in Kakariko Village.

Nine of them. As young Link, empty a bottle of bugs onto the soft soil and a Gold Skulltula comes out. The soil in Zora’s River is the only one without one.
