All six Great Fairy Fountains in OoT 3D: where each one is, how to open it, which age you need and what she gives you, from the Magic Meter to double defense.

All 6 Great Fairy locations

There are six Great Fairy Fountains in Ocarina of Time 3D. Open the entrance, stand on the Triforce mark and play Zelda’s Lullaby (X, A, Y, X, A, Y). Go to Death Mountain Summit first: that Great Fairy gives you the Magic Meter, and the others will not appear until you have it.

How to call a Great Fairy

Inside a Great Fairy Fountain in Ocarina of Time 3D with the Triforce mark in front of the pool
Every Great Fairy Fountain has a Triforce mark in front of the pool. Stand on it and play Zelda’s Lullaby.
  1. Learn Zelda’s Lullaby. Impa teaches it after you meet Princess Zelda.
  2. Open the entrance. Most fountains are behind a cracked wall that you bomb. The crater needs the Megaton Hammer, and the fountain outside Ganon’s Castle needs the Golden Gauntlets.
  3. Stand on the Triforce mark in front of the pool.
  4. Play Zelda’s Lullaby. The Great Fairy rises from the pool and gives you her reward. The spell fairies greet you with “Welcome, Link! I am the Great Fairy of Magic! I will give you a magic spell. Please take it.”

Each Great Fairy Fountain

1. Death Mountain Summit

Great Fairy of Power. Young or adult Link can visit her. She gives you the Magic Meter and the magic Spin Attack, and charging a Spin Attack now uses magic.

To get in, bomb the cracked wall at the top of Death Mountain Trail. A Megaton Hammer swing works too. See it on the map.

2. Hyrule Castle

Great Fairy of Magic. Only young Link can visit her. She gives you Din’s Fire.

To get in, go past the gatehouse to the “Dead End” sign, blow up the boulder and crawl through the hole. See it on the map.

3. Zora’s Fountain

Great Fairy of Magic. Young or adult Link can visit her. She gives you Farore’s Wind.

To get in, bomb the cracked wall on the small island in Zora’s Fountain. See it on the map.

4. Death Mountain Crater

Great Fairy of Wisdom. Only adult Link can visit her. She gives you double magic: the Magic Meter doubles in length.

To get in, near the entrance from Goron City, smash the two rocks blocking the fountain entrance with the Megaton Hammer. See it on the map.

5. Desert Colossus

Great Fairy of Magic. Young or adult Link can visit her. She gives you Nayru’s Love.

To get in, bomb the cracked wall in the cliff of the Desert Colossus. See it on the map.

6. Outside Ganon’s Castle

Great Fairy of Courage. Only adult Link can visit her. She gives you double defense: enemies deal half damage.

To get in, lift the big black pillar near the castle with the Golden Gauntlets, then follow the path down. See it on the map.

What each reward does

Great Fairy rewards
RewardWhat it does
Magic MeterLets you use magic, and teaches the magic Spin Attack. Charging a Spin Attack uses magic: “Pay attention to your green Magic Meter!”
Din’s FireA dome of fire around Link. It also burns things, and it is needed at the Shadow Temple.
Farore’s WindSets a warp point inside a dungeon and takes you back to it. “Remember, you can use Farore’s Wind only inside dungeons, OK?”
Nayru’s LoveA barrier that protects Link for a short time. “Nayru’s Love is in effect for only a limited time, so use it carefully.”
Double magic“Now you have twice as much magic power!”
Double defense“With your enhanced defenses, damage inflicted by enemies will be reduced by half.” Your hearts get a white border.

For the 3DS buttons for each spell, see the item list.

If a Great Fairy will not appear

  • You do not have the Magic Meter yet. Visit the Great Fairy on Death Mountain Summit first.
  • You are not on the Triforce mark. Walk up to the mark in front of the pool, then play the song.
  • You played the wrong song. It must be Zelda’s Lullaby: X, A, Y, X, A, Y.
  • You are the wrong age. Din’s Fire at Hyrule Castle is for young Link. The crater and Ganon’s Castle fountains need adult items.
  • You can’t open the crater fountain. Bombs do not work on the rocks there. You need the Megaton Hammer from the Fire Temple.

The small fairy fountains in grottos and behind some walls are different: they have ordinary fairies that refill your hearts, not a Great Fairy. Their entrances are on the Ocarina of Time 3D map.

Great Fairy FAQ

How many Great Fairies are there in Ocarina of Time 3D?

Six. They are on Death Mountain Summit, at Hyrule Castle, in Zora’s Fountain, in Death Mountain Crater, in the Desert Colossus and outside Ganon’s Castle.

Which Great Fairy should you visit first?

The one on Death Mountain Summit. She gives you the Magic Meter, and the other Great Fairies will not appear until you have it.

How do you call a Great Fairy?

Stand on the Triforce mark in front of the fountain and play Zelda’s Lullaby. On 3DS the notes are X, A, Y, X, A, Y.

Where is the Great Fairy for Din’s Fire?

At Hyrule Castle. As young Link, go past the gatehouse to the Dead End sign, blow up the boulder and crawl through the hole.

Where do you get double defense?

From the Great Fairy outside Ganon’s Castle. As adult Link, lift the big black pillar near the castle with the Golden Gauntlets to open her fountain. She halves the damage enemies deal to you.

Can you go back to a Great Fairy?

Yes. Once you have her reward, she says “When battle has made you weary, please come back to see me.” Play Zelda’s Lullaby again to have your health and Magic Meter fully restored.
