The best class for Tharja in Fire Emblem Awakening is Sorcerer. She joins in Chapter 9 as a level 10 Dark Mage, so you can use a Master Seal on her right away. Sorcerer keeps dark tomes like Nosferatu, gives her the highest Magic cap she can reach (47), and teaches Vengeance and Tomebreaker. Dark Knight is the other promotion. It has Movement 8 and Lifetaker, but it can't use dark tomes at all. Her Knight and Archer classes are only worth a visit for a skill, then she goes back to Sorcerer.

Which class for which run
For almost every playthrough the answer is the same: Sorcerer, and stay there. The other classes only fit a few situations.
| Situation | Class | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Main story, one Master Seal | Sorcerer | Keeps Nosferatu and every other dark tome. Magic cap 47, Resistance cap 44, Vengeance at level 5. |
| You need her to cross the map fast | Dark Knight | Movement 8 and swords. Uses Elthunder and other normal tomes, but no dark tomes. |
| Spare Second Seals and time to level | Dark Knight or Great Knight, then back to Sorcerer | Lifetaker (Dark Knight 15) and Luna (Great Knight 5) stay with her after she changes back. |
| She mostly rides along in Pair Up | Sorcerer or Dark Knight | Sorcerer gives the lead unit Mag, Def and Res. Dark Knight adds Movement +1. |
| Final combat class | Not Knight, General, Archer or Sniper | Those classes use her Strength (25% personal growth) and ignore her 45% Magic. |
Sorcerer vs Dark Knight
A Master Seal on a level 10 Dark Mage asks you to pick one of two classes. These are Tharja's numbers for each. Her caps already include her personal modifiers (Magic +3, Skill −1, Speed +1, Luck −3, Defense +1).

| Stat | Sorcerer | Dark Knight |
|---|---|---|
| Weapons | Tomes, including dark tomes | Swords and tomes, no dark tomes |
| Movement | 6 | 8 (mounted) |
| Skills | ||
| Stats right after promoting at Lv 10 (Normal and Hard; Lunatic adds 1 HP, Mag and Spd) | HP 30, Str 5, Mag 14, Skl 7, Spd 13, Lck 3, Def 13, Res 10 | HP 32, Str 7, Mag 13, Skl 9, Spd 14, Lck 3, Def 15, Res 8 |
| Tharja's caps | HP 80, Str 30, Mag 47, Skl 37, Spd 41, Lck 42, Def 42, Res 44 | HP 80, Str 38, Mag 44, Skl 39, Spd 41, Lck 42, Def 43, Res 38 |
| Growths (hers + class) | HP 85, Str 25, Mag 65, Skl 40, Spd 60, Lck 40, Def 45, Res 30 | HP 90, Str 40, Mag 60, Skl 40, Spd 60, Lck 40, Def 45, Res 25 |
| Weak to | Nothing extra | Weapons that are effective against mounted units |
The stat gap is small: on promotion Dark Knight has 2 more HP, Strength, Skill and Defense and 1 more Speed, and Sorcerer has 1 more Magic and 2 more Resistance. Magic and Resistance caps go to Sorcerer by 3 and 6. The real difference is the weapons. Nosferatu is what lets Tharja stand next to enemies and heal herself, and only Sorcerer keeps it.
Vengeance "adds half accrued damage to attacks," meaning half of the HP she is missing. She learns it at Sorcerer level 5, and it triggers at Skill × 2 percent. With Skill in the low teens that is around 20 to 26 percent, so treat it as a bonus. Don't build around it until her Skill grows. Tomebreaker gives Hit and Avoid +50 against enemies using tomes, which makes her very hard for enemy mages and Sorcerers to hit.
Dark Knight's case is speed and reach. Movement 8 lets her pick a safe tile to attack from, and Lifetaker "restores 50% HP if the enemy is defeated" when she attacks. It is a mounted class, though: woods slow her down, and weapons that are effective against mounted units deal extra damage to her.
Why Nosferatu is grey on a Dark Knight
The name is misleading. A Dark Knight is a mounted mage who uses swords and tomes, and the tomes it uses are the normal ones. Without the Shadowgift skill, only Dark Mages and Sorcerers can use dark tomes, so after a Master Seal into Dark Knight, Tharja's Nosferatu turns grey in her inventory.
| Tome | Rank | Mt | Hit | Uses | Price | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| E | 5 | 70 | 45 | 540 G | None | |
| D | 7 | 65 | 20 | 980 G | Absorbs HP equal to half the damage dealt | |
| C | 4 | 60 | 20 | 1,380 G | Crit 50 | |
| C | 10 | 65 | 10 | 2,000 G | Range 3–10 | |
| B | 10 | 45 | 30 | 2,160 G | Strikes twice | |
| A | 19 | 75 | 25 | Not sold | Crit 10 |
Nosferatu heals half the damage she deals, not all of it. That is still enough to keep a high-HP, high-Defense mage like Tharja on the front line against weak enemies, and that's the main reason Sorcerer wins for her.
The only way around the rule is the Shadowgift skill, which lets a unit use dark tomes in any class that uses tomes. Tharja can't learn it: no class teaches Shadowgift, and only a few special characters such as Aversa come with it. For Tharja, Dark Knight means Elthunder, Arcthunder, Levin Sword and other normal weapons. If you want the detail for Miriel, Ricken and other mages, see Sage, Dark Knight or Dark Mage.
Recruit her in Chapter 9, then promote
Tharja is one of the Plegian soldiers in Chapter 9, Emmeryn. She doesn't join on her own. Move Chrom next to her and use Talk. She joins as a level 10 Dark Mage with Elthunder and Nosferatu, tome rank D, and the skills Hex and Anathema.

| Difficulty | HP | Str | Mag | Skl | Spd | Lck | Def | Res |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Normal and Hard | 25 | 4 | 11 | 5 | 12 | 3 | 10 | 7 |
| Lunatic | 26 | 4 | 12 | 5 | 13 | 3 | 10 | 7 |
Her personal growth rates are HP 40%, Str 25%, Mag 45%, Skl 25%, Spd 45%, Lck 40%, Def 35% and Res 20%. Magic and Speed are her strengths; Resistance is low for a mage, which is one more reason to take Sorcerer's higher Resistance cap and Tomebreaker.
Promote now or level her to 20 first?
Promote as soon as you have a Master Seal. She already has both Dark Mage skills, Hex at level 1 and Anathema at level 10, so levels 11 to 20 as a Dark Mage teach her nothing new. Dark Mage's class caps are also much lower (Magic 27 before her modifier). The Master Seal adds HP +5, Str +1, Mag +3, Skl +2, Spd +1, Def +3, Res +3 and Movement +1 for Sorcerer, or HP +7, Str +3, Mag +2, Skl +4, Spd +2, Def +5, Res +1 and Movement +3 for Dark Knight.
Waiting until level 20 only pays off on a long grind where every level-up counts, and in Awakening you can keep leveling with Second Seals anyway.
Where to get the seals
Both seals cost 2,500 G. The first shop that always sells Master Seals is Port Ferox in Chapter 12. Second Seals are always for sale from the Mila Tree in Chapter 16. A Second Seal works on a base class from level 10, or on an advanced class at any level. Below level 10, an advanced class can only drop back to a base class. From level 10 it can switch to any class in her list, so a Sorcerer at level 10 or higher can go straight to Dark Knight or Great Knight, and either one can come back once it reaches level 10. If gold is short, how to make gold fast covers the quick ways to pay for them.
Her growth rates in each class
Each class adds its own growth rates to hers. These totals are what she actually gets per level in each class.
| Class | HP | Str | Mag | Skl | Spd | Lck | Def | Res |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dark Mage | 90 | 30 | 60 | 40 | 60 | 40 | 45 | 30 |
| Sorcerer | 85 | 25 | 65 | 40 | 60 | 40 | 45 | 30 |
| Dark Knight | 90 | 40 | 60 | 40 | 60 | 40 | 45 | 25 |
| Knight | 90 | 50 | 45 | 40 | 55 | 40 | 50 | 25 |
| General | 90 | 50 | 45 | 40 | 55 | 40 | 50 | 30 |
| Great Knight | 90 | 50 | 45 | 40 | 60 | 40 | 50 | 25 |
| Archer | 85 | 40 | 45 | 55 | 60 | 40 | 45 | 25 |
| Sniper | 85 | 40 | 45 | 55 | 60 | 40 | 50 | 25 |
| Bow Knight | 90 | 45 | 45 | 50 | 65 | 40 | 40 | 25 |
Sorcerer has her best Magic growth. The Knight classes do give her 50% Strength, but their Magic caps are 33 or lower even with her +3, and they can't use tomes, so that Strength only helps while she is in those classes.
Knight and Archer: worth it only for skills
Skills Tharja learns in any class stay with her when she changes class, and she can equip five at a time. That is the only reason to send her to Knight or Archer. Pick a skill, level the class until she learns it, then use another Second Seal to go back to Sorcerer.

| Skill | Class and level | What it does | For Tharja |
|---|---|---|---|
| Great Knight 5 | Halves enemy Def/Res when attacking. Trigger % = Skill | The best pick. Works with tomes too. | |
| Dark Knight 15 | When attacking, restores 50% HP if the enemy is defeated | Good with Nosferatu once she is back as a Sorcerer. | |
| General 15 | Halves sword, lance, axe, beaststone and blight damage. Trigger % = Skill | A long grind for a defensive skill. | |
| Great Knight 15 | Dual Guard rate +10% | Works when either partner has it, whether she leads or supports. | |
| Sniper 5 | Hit +20 | Helps Waste and Nosferatu, which have low Hit. | |
| Bow Knight 15 | Hit/Avo +50 if the enemy is using a bow | Niche. Tomebreaker covers her bigger weakness. |
Luna is the one to get first. Great Knight is an advanced class, so a Sorcerer at level 10 or higher can Second Seal straight into it and learn Luna in four level-ups. Keep her there until level 10, so the next Second Seal can take her straight back to Sorcerer. Pavise and Dual Guard+ need level 15 in a class where she can't use her tomes, which is a lot of time for a skill a mage rarely needs.
Five skills for Sorcerer Tharja
- Story run, no detours:
Vengeance,
Tomebreaker,
Anathema,
Hex. All four come from her own two classes. - With spare Second Seals: Vengeance, Tomebreaker, Luna, Lifetaker, Anathema. Drop Hex for Luna; Anathema already lowers the Avoid of every enemy within three spaces.
Anathema "reduces Avo/Ddg by 10 for all enemies within three spaces," so it helps the units around her land hits too. Hex takes 15 Avoid from adjacent enemies only.
Classes Tharja can't use
Her class list is Dark Mage, Knight and Archer, and their promotions. That rules out several classes players often ask about:
- Sage. Sage comes from Mage, Priest and Cleric. Tharja has none of them.
- Dark Flier and Galeforce. Dark Flier is a Pegasus Knight promotion, and Pegasus Knight isn't in her list, so she can't learn Galeforce in any class. See the tier list for the women who can.
- Bride. The Bride class needs the Wedding Bouquet from downloadable content. It doesn't use tomes, so even with the DLC it is not a better class for her.
Sorcerer or Dark Knight as the support unit
When Tharja stands behind another unit in Pair Up, her class decides part of the bonus the lead unit gets. Supports at rank C or B add 1 to each of these stats, and rank A or S add 2. Movement doesn't change with support rank.
| Tharja's class | Mag | Def | Res | Mov |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dark Mage | +3 | +3 | 0 | 0 |
| Sorcerer | +3 | +2 | +3 | 0 |
| Dark Knight | +2 | +3 | +1 | +1 |
Behind a physical unit, the Magic bonus does nothing, so a Dark Knight Tharja's Defense +3 and Movement +1 are worth more there. Behind a mage, Sorcerer's Magic and Resistance are the better pair.
What changes for Noire
Tharja's daughter Noire joins in Paralogue 15 as an Archer. She inherits Tharja's class list, so she can be a Sorcerer or Dark Knight too, plus classes from her father. Noire can reach Dark Flier and Galeforce only if her father gives her Pegasus Knight, for example Gaius or Donnel. Tharja's class doesn't change that, but Noire also inherits the skill in Tharja's last equipped skill slot, so putting Luna or Vengeance there is a good gift. The marriage planner shows Noire's classes for every father.
Tharja or Henry?
Henry is the other Dark Mage. He joins in Chapter 13 at level 12. You don't have to choose; two Sorcerers work fine. Tharja arrives four chapters earlier and is faster (12 Speed against his 8). Henry starts with much more Skill (14 against her 5), so his Vengeance triggers more often, and his list adds Barbarian and Thief instead of Knight and Archer. See the characters page for both.
Quick plan
- Recruit her with Chrom in Chapter 9.
- Use a Master Seal and pick Sorcerer. Port Ferox sells them from Chapter 12.
- Give her Nosferatu for weak enemies and Elthunder or Arcthunder when you need Hit.
- Equip Vengeance at Sorcerer 5 and Tomebreaker at 15.
- Optional, with Second Seals: Dark Knight to 15 for Lifetaker, Great Knight to 10 (Luna comes at 5), then back to Sorcerer.
For every class and skill in the game, see classes and skills. Tome stats and prices are on the weapons and items page.
