Mystery Gift still opens from the Pokémon X and Y title menu, but nothing new can come through it. Nintendo shut down 3DS online services on April 8, 2024 (Pacific time). Since then GET VIA INTERNET can’t reach a server and GET WITH CODE can’t check a code. GET VIA LOCAL WIRELESS and GET VIA INFRARED still turn on, but they only receive a gift from another system that is sending one, and the official events ended long ago. What still works is the pickup: if your Card Album has a Wonder Card without a stamp, the delivery girl in the blue uniform at any Pokémon Center still hands over that Pokémon or item. The menu is the same in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y.

Does Mystery Gift still work in Pokémon X and Y?
Only partly. The menu and the pickup still work; getting new gifts doesn’t. Here’s where each part stands in 2026:
| Part of Mystery Gift | Works in 2026? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| GET VIA INTERNET | No | 3DS online services ended April 8, 2024 |
| GET WITH CODE | No | The game checks every code online, so even codes with no end date fail |
| GET VIA LOCAL WIRELESS | It turns on, but nothing official is sending | It needs a nearby system distributing a gift. Store and event distributions ended years ago |
| GET VIA INFRARED | It turns on, but nothing official is sending | It needs a sender aimed at your 3DS |
| Picking up a Wonder Card you already have | Yes | The delivery girl is part of the offline game |
| CHECK THE CARD ALBUM | Yes | Your 24 card slots stay on your save |
Open the menu · Collect a leftover card · Read the Card Album · Fix a pickup problem · Past events · Keep your event Pokémon
What counts as Mystery Gift in X and Y, and what doesn’t
- Mystery Gift is the title-menu option covered here. You receive a Wonder Card, then collect the gift from the delivery girl.
- POKÉMON LINK is a different title-menu option. It brought in data from other 3DS software and services and sent it straight to your Boxes and Bag. You need the Pokédex before it works.
- Story gifts, like a Pokémon an NPC hands you, never use a Wonder Card. They are part of the normal game and still work.
- Pokémon HOME and Legends: Z-A have their own Mystery Gift menus. A gift there can’t reach an X or Y save, because HOME only takes Pokémon out of Pokémon Bank and never sends them back to a 3DS game.
How to open Mystery Gift in Pokémon X and Y
A brand-new game doesn’t show MYSTERY GIFT on the title menu. Make a save file first:
- Start a new game and play until you can save. Save your progress from the X menu.
- Close the game from the HOME Menu, then start it again.
- Choose MYSTERY GIFT on the title menu. It sits under CONTINUE. The game greets you with “Welcome to Mystery Gift!”
It’s best to save after Professor Sycamore’s Pokédex is handed over in Aquacorde Town, just after you pick your first partner. Pokémon Link needs that Pokédex, and the first Pokémon Center where you can pick up a gift is in Santalune City, a little further on.
You don’t need an update to open the menu or collect a card you already have. The Mystery Gift menu and the Card Album are the same in the original game and in Ver. 1.5. The update only mattered while the servers were up: Nintendo listed “Redeeming a Mystery Gift” among the online features that needed Ver. 1.5.
The four RECEIVE GIFT options

| Option | How it worked | 2026 status |
|---|---|---|
| GET VIA LOCAL WIRELESS | Searched for a nearby distribution, such as an in-store event | Turns on and searches. With no sender nearby you’ll see “There were no gifts to be found...” |
| GET VIA INTERNET | Downloaded a limited-time worldwide or regional gift | No server to connect to |
| GET VIA INFRARED | Received a gift from a device aimed at your 3DS | Turns on. The game tells you to “face your Nintendo 3DS system toward the other person’s” |
| GET WITH CODE | You typed a serial code from a store, card or newsletter. The game checked it online | Every code fails now |
If you see “Wireless communication is currently disabled,” turn wireless on. Depending on your model, that’s the wireless switch or the setting on the HOME Menu. Infrared doesn’t come from the Game Card. It’s a port on the 3DS system, so aim the back of the system at the sender.
How to pick up a leftover Wonder Card
Receiving a gift through Mystery Gift never put a Pokémon on your team straight away. The game said, “The gift has been received! Please pick up your gift from the delivery girl in any Pokémon Center.” If you downloaded something years ago and never collected it, it’s still waiting.
- Check the Card Album. On the title menu, choose MYSTERY GIFT, then CHECK THE CARD ALBUM. A card without a Poké Ball stamp hasn’t been collected yet.
- Make room. Keep at least one party slot free for a Pokémon gift. For an item gift, make sure you can carry more of that item in your Bag.
- Choose CONTINUE and go to any Pokémon Center. The first one is in Santalune City.
- Talk to the delivery girl in the blue uniform. She stands in front of the counter, to the left of the nurse. She’ll say, “I’ve got a Mystery Gift here with your name on it,” and hand it over. A gift can also be an Egg.
- Save your game. The card now has a stamp.

Don’t start a new game to “refresh” a card. Wonder Cards are stored on your save file, so a new save deletes the album along with everything else.
Card Album: stamps, the 24-card limit, and discarding cards

- A card with a stamp means you already collected the gift from the delivery girl.
- A card with no stamp means the gift is still waiting at any Pokémon Center.
- The album holds 24 cards. Once it’s full, you can’t receive another gift until you throw one away.
- To throw a card away, select it and choose Discard. A card you haven’t collected can’t go: “This card cannot be thrown away, because you have not picked up your gift yet.”
- Swap just reorders cards. X and Y have no option to send a Wonder Card to someone else.
If all 24 cards are uncollected, the game says you are out of room for gifts. Collect at least one at a Pokémon Center first, then discard its card.
Why GET VIA INTERNET and old codes don’t work
Forums and video descriptions are still full of codes, from store cards to 2016 anniversary codes. None of them work now:
- Every code is checked online. With 3DS online services shut down since April 8, 2024, the game can’t verify a code, even one that had no end date.
- Most codes had an end date anyway. The game says “The code has expired. You cannot receive the gift.” Among the last codes were the second-chance Genesect codes (GENESECT20 in North America, GENESECT2016 in Europe and Australia) and Europe’s HAPPY code for Meowth. All of them stopped working after February 28, 2017.
- Most codes were one-use, and most gifts were one per game. The game says “You’ve received this gift before. You cannot get another one,” or “This gift has already been received.”
Two smaller details from when codes still worked: entering too many wrong codes locked the code screen “for a while” (Japan’s official instructions put the limit at 10 tries, then a wait of 24 hours or more), and the game warned that a battery dying mid-download could make that code unusable. An event that has ended can’t be downloaded again through any official channel. If you see an old event Pokémon arrive in a 2026 video, it may just be a card someone received years ago and is only collecting now.
Mystery Gift not working: checklist

| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No MYSTERY GIFT on the title menu | There’s no save file yet | Save once, close the game from the HOME Menu, restart |
| “Your party is full. Please make room in your party to receive your gift.” | Six Pokémon in your party | Put one in a PC Box, then talk to her again |
| “...you don’t seem to have room in your Bag for any more...” | No space for that item | Use or sell some of that item. If it’s an item a Pokémon can hold, you can also give one to a Pokémon. Then try again |
| “I’m afraid I don’t have any other gifts for you just now.” | Every card is already stamped | Nothing left to collect on this save |
| “There were no gifts to be found...” | Local wireless or infrared found no sender | Expected in 2026. No official distributions are running |
| Internet connection fails | 3DS online services are shut down | No fix. GET VIA INTERNET can’t be used any more |
| “The code has expired.” | The code’s window closed | No fix |
| “You’ve received this gift before.” | The gift was one per game | Check your Boxes and the Card Album |
| “You are out of room for Wonder Cards.” | All 24 slots are taken | Discard a stamped card |
| “Wireless communication is currently disabled.” | Wireless is off | Turn wireless on with the switch or from the HOME Menu |
Each Wonder Card set whether its Pokémon was shiny, and the Shiny Charm doesn’t change that. See shiny Pokémon in Pokémon Y for what the Charm does affect.
What Mystery Gift used to give in X and Y

X and Y events ran from launch in October 2013 through the anniversary year of 2016, and the last codes expired on February 28, 2017. The table lists some of the better-known ones. Dates are for the regions listed. “Download” and “Redeem” mean when the game could receive the gift. “Store codes” means when stores handed codes out, which could be shorter than the redeem window.

Hoopa was first given out in 2015. The 2016 codes in the table were later chances to get it.
Blazikenite can’t be found anywhere in normal X and Y play. The Torchic event was its source in these games. Today the only way to get one into X or Y is a trade: a Pokémon holding Blazikenite can come over from another X or Y game, or from Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire, where the stone is part of the normal game. See every Mega Stone in X and Y. Some event Pokémon came with special moves that the Move Relearner can teach again later. It depends on the event.
Is Mystery Gift different in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y?
No. The menus, messages and Card Album are identical. Only some events gave a different Pokémon or item depending on the version, such as the Heracross or Pinsir download and the Heracronite or Pinsirite code. Those are marked in the table above. The Walmart codes are different: which code you got depended on the box you bought, but both Garchomp and Scizor codes worked in either game.
What you can still do in 2026
- Collect any unstamped cards using the steps above.
- Trade locally. A friend with an event Pokémon can trade it to you over local wireless. Local trades don’t need the internet.
- Use Pokémon Bank while you can. Bank still moves Pokémon in and out of X and Y until February 25, 2027, at 7:00 p.m. PST (February 26, 3:00 a.m. UTC). It can no longer be downloaded for the first time, but if you downloaded it before, you can still redownload it. Only Pokémon that are still on the 3DS side, in Bank or a Generation 6 game, can go back into X or Y. From Bank, Pokémon can go to Pokémon HOME, but HOME can’t send them back to a 3DS game.
- Keep the cartridge save. An event Pokémon you already own is on your save, not on a server. The shutdown doesn’t touch it.
The Friend Safari is another feature that still works offline. See the Kalos Pokédex for every Pokémon you can catch without an event.
FAQ
Does Mystery Gift still work in Pokémon X and Y?
The menu opens and the delivery girl still hands over gifts from unstamped Wonder Cards. GET VIA INTERNET and GET WITH CODE stopped working when 3DS online services ended on April 8, 2024, and no official events are running.
Are there any working Mystery Gift codes for Pokémon X or Y?
No. Every code has to be checked online, so none can be redeemed now. Even before the shutdown, the last codes for X and Y, including the second-chance Genesect codes, expired on February 28, 2017.
Where do I pick up a Mystery Gift in X and Y?
From the delivery girl in the blue uniform at any Pokémon Center. The first one is in Santalune City. Keep a party slot free, and save after you collect it.
Why is Mystery Gift missing from the title screen?
The option only appears once a save file exists. Save your game, close it from the HOME Menu and start it again.
How many Wonder Cards can I keep?
24. You can discard stamped cards to free a slot, but not cards whose gift you haven’t collected.
Can I still get Diancie or Hoopa in X and Y?
Not through Mystery Gift. Trade with someone who has one, or move your own Diancie or Hoopa from Pokémon Bank before Bank shuts down on February 25, 2027 (Pacific time). A Pokémon that has already gone to Pokémon HOME can’t come back to X or Y.
Is this the same as Mystery Gift in Legends: Z-A or Pokémon HOME?
No. Those games have their own Mystery Gift menus and codes, and nothing from them can reach an X or Y save.
