How to Get Torchic in Pokémon X and Y (You Can’t Catch It)

You can’t catch Torchic in Pokémon X and Y. The 2013 Mystery Gift is over, so trade locally or withdraw one from Pokémon Bank before Feb 25, 2027.

You can’t catch Torchic in Pokémon X and Y. It isn’t on any route, in any cave or in the Friend Safari, and nobody in the story gives you one. It isn’t the Kalos fire starter either: the fire Pokémon you pick at the café in Aquacorde Town is Fennekin. In X and Y, Torchic only ever came from a worldwide Mystery Gift you downloaded over the internet between October 12, 2013 and January 15, 2014, a level 10 Torchic with the Hidden Ability Speed Boost, holding Blazikenite. That event is long over, and Nintendo shut down 3DS online play on April 8, 2024. What’s left is a local wireless trade from someone who has one (Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are the easy source, because Torchic is one of their starters) or a Pokémon Bank withdrawal before the service ends on February 25, 2027 at 7:00 PM Pacific. Pokémon X and Pokémon Y work exactly the same way.

Can you catch Torchic in Pokémon X and Y?

No, and if you just spent an hour following an old video, you didn’t miss anything. Torchic isn’t in a single encounter table in X or Y: not in grass, caves, water, rock smash, hordes, the Friend Safari or any one-time encounter, and no NPC or story event hands one over. Videos titled “how to catch Torchic in X and Y” are about the 2013 download, not a spot on the map.

Torchic also has no number in any of the three Kalos Pokédexes (Central, Coastal or Mountain), so the Kalos Pokédex won’t point you anywhere. It only shows up in your National Pokédex once you actually get one.

Pokémon X is the same

There’s no X-only or Y-only Torchic. Both versions have the same empty tables, the 2013 gift worked in both, and the leftover ways below work in both. Everything on this page applies to either game.

That’s not Fennekin, and it’s not Braixen

A lot of the confusion comes from starters. Torchic is the fire starter from Hoenn (Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire). The fire starter you can pick in X and Y is Fennekin, one of the three Kalos starters waiting at the café in Aquacorde Town. Later, Professor Sycamore gives you Bulbasaur, Charmander or Squirtle, but never a Hoenn starter.

The Fire Friend Safari doesn’t have it either. Its Pokémon are Ponyta, Growlithe, Pansear and Magmar in the first slot, Charmeleon, Pyroar, Slugma and Larvesta in the second, and Braixen, Fletchinder and Ninetales in the third. Braixen is Fennekin’s evolution, not Combusken. No Friend Safari type has any Pokémon from the Torchic line.

Torchic vs Fennekin vs Friend Safari Braixen in Pokémon X and Y
Torchic isn’t in Kalos at all. Fennekin is the café starter, and Braixen is what the Fire Safari can give you.

Why Mystery Gift and the “event code” do nothing

The only way X and Y ever gave out Torchic was the launch Mystery Gift. The card was called “A Special Torchic!” and it downloaded over the internet in North America, Europe, Australia, Japan, Korea and Taiwan from October 12, 2013 to January 15, 2014. You chose Mystery Gift on the title screen, picked Get via Internet, received the Wonder Card, then collected Torchic from the delivery girl in any Pokémon Center. The window closed more than a decade ago, so seeing “There are currently no gifts available” in your game is normal: there’s nothing left to send.

Since April 8, 2024 (5:00 PM Pacific), the internet half doesn’t even connect. Nintendo ended 3DS online play that day, which took internet Mystery Gift, the GTS and Wonder Trade with it. The full timeline for every X and Y event is on the Mystery Gift page.

It was Wi-Fi, not a serial code

There was never a Torchic code. Any list with a “Pokémon X Torchic event code” has it mixed up with another event. The Torchic card only came over the internet, so there’s no old code to try and nothing to type in.

Check the Card Album first

If you played back in 2013, look before you give up. A card you received but never picked up is still waiting, and the pickup needs no internet:

  1. On the title screen, choose Mystery Gift, then Card Album.
  2. Look for “A Special Torchic!” without a Poké Ball stamp. No stamp means the gift was never collected, and a card like that can’t be thrown away, so it should still be there.
  3. Go back, choose Continue, and walk into any Pokémon Center.
  4. Talk to the delivery girl in the blue uniform, in front of the counter to the left of the nurse. Have a free party slot, or she can’t hand Torchic over.
  5. Save the game.

Each game could receive the card once. Starting a new save wipes the card and any Torchic on it, and while the event was live you could simply download it again. Since January 2014 that’s no longer true, so if you restarted and lost your Torchic or its Blazikenite, there’s no way to get the gift back on that cartridge.

Local wireless trade

This is the main way left, and it’s the only way to bring Blazikenite along. Both players turn on wireless, open the PSS on the lower screen, tap the other player’s icon and choose Trade. Local wireless doesn’t use Nintendo’s servers, so it still works. The other player can be on X, Y, Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire, and a Combusken or Blaziken works just as well as a Torchic.

Withdraw from Pokémon Bank before February 25, 2027

Bank works in both directions with X, Y, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Deposit a Torchic from another Generation 6 save, or use one that’s already in Bank, and withdraw it into X or Y. Nintendo ends Pokémon Bank on February 25, 2027 at 7:00 PM Pacific (11:00 AM on February 26, Beijing time). First-time downloads of Bank ended in March 2023, so this only works if you downloaded Bank before. If it’s no longer on your 3DS, you can re-download it from Nintendo eShop.

Bank has two limits. It doesn’t move held items, so a Blazikenite stays behind in the game you deposit from. And once a Pokémon has been withdrawn into Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun or Ultra Moon even once, it can never go back to a Generation 6 game.

Trade Torchic from Omega Ruby to Pokémon Y, or withdraw from Pokémon Bank before February 25 2027
Local trade and Pokémon Bank are the two ways left. Bank ends on February 25, 2027 at 7:00 PM PST and leaves held items behind.

Start one in Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire, then move it

If you have Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire, this is the easiest official way to get the species. Torchic is one of the three starters you choose from at the start of the game. Once you have it:

  1. Play until trading opens up on the PSS, which happens early in the story.
  2. Trade it over local wireless to your X or Y on a second 3DS, or deposit it in Pokémon Bank and withdraw it into X or Y before February 25, 2027.
  3. If you want Blazikenite too, give it to the Pokémon and trade it over local wireless. Bank won’t carry it.

The starter Torchic in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire has Blaze, not Speed Boost. You get the bird, not the Hidden Ability. In those games you get Blazikenite from Steven on Route 120 if Torchic was your starter. If you picked Treecko or Mudkip, defeat or catch Groudon in Omega Ruby or Kyogre in Alpha Sapphire, then find the old man who sells stones on Route 114 and buy “Fading Fire” from him. That’s Blazikenite, for $1,500.

Why HOME can’t send it back

Moving Pokémon from Bank to Pokémon HOME is one way. A Torchic already in HOME can go on to Switch games that have it, but not back to X or Y.

The 2013 Speed Boost Torchic (so you can recognize a real one)

If someone offers you an “event Torchic” in a local trade, it helps to know which details came with the gift and which ones can change. The card handed over a level 10 Torchic, but a real one can be any level by now, and it may have evolved, learned new moves or lost its Blazikenite. That’s normal training, not a sign it’s fake.

Checking a Torchic someone offers you

Look at the details that can’t change. A Shiny or female “event” Torchic, one in any ball other than a Cherish Ball, or one with a different OT or ID didn’t come from this card. A higher level, different moves or a missing Blazikenite don’t rule it out, so if you want the stone, ask the other player to trade it over holding Blazikenite. Matching details are only a good sign, not proof, because edited Pokémon can copy them. Because the OT is XY and not you, the Name Rater won’t change its nickname. If you only need a Torchic for your Pokédex, any Torchic will do.

Speed Boost vs Blaze, and breeding more

Torchic’s normal ability is Blaze, which powers up Fire moves when its HP is low. Speed Boost is its Hidden Ability, raising Speed by one stage at the end of every turn. In X and Y you can’t find a Speed Boost Torchic in the wild, the Friend Safari or a horde, and the Ability Capsule won’t help: it only swaps between two regular abilities, and Torchic has just one.

So once you have one Speed Boost Torchic, Combusken or Blaziken, the Day Care on Route 7 is how you make more. Speed Boost passes down when the mother has the Hidden Ability, or when a father with the Hidden Ability is bred with Ditto:

  • A female with Speed Boost passes it to 60% of her Eggs, paired with a male from the Field group or with Ditto.
  • A male with Speed Boost (the 2013 gift is always male) can only pass it on when you pair him with Ditto, and then it’s also 60% of the Eggs.
  • Eggs hatch after 20 cycles, about 5,140 steps. A Pokémon with Flame Body or Magma Armor in your party roughly halves that.
  • A baby never inherits the Cherish Ball. Hatched Torchic come in the mother’s ball, or in a Poké Ball if she’s in a Cherish Ball or you bred a male with Ditto.

The same applies to a Shiny Torchic: the gift could never be Shiny, but Eggs can be. The Masuda method works once you have any Torchic to breed from.

Blazikenite and Mega Blaziken in X and Y

There’s no such thing as Mega Torchic. Torchic evolves into Combusken at level 16 and into Blaziken at level 36, and only Blaziken can Mega Evolve. Mega Blaziken is Fire / Fighting like Blaziken, and its ability is always Speed Boost, even if your Blaziken has Blaze.

You need two things. The Mega Ring comes from Korrina at the Tower of Mastery after the Shalour City Gym. Blazikenite is the hard part: it exists in X and Y, but no item ball, shop or NPC gives it out. In 2013 it came held by the gift Torchic. Today it only comes in a local trade, held by any Pokémon, from another X or Y save that still has the event stone, or from Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire. Pokémon Bank can’t carry it. The full list of stones is on the Mega Stones locations page.

Torchic evolution level in Pokémon X and Y: Combusken at 16, Blaziken at 36, Mega Blaziken with Blazikenite
Combusken at level 16, Blaziken at 36. Mega Blaziken needs Blazikenite and the Mega Ring.

Dex completion: the Shiny Charm and Oval Charm

You need Torchic for the Shiny Charm. That charm needs the whole National Pokédex caught, minus the Mythical Pokémon, and Torchic, Combusken and Blaziken all count. You can’t skip them, so plan a trade or a Bank withdrawal before Bank closes. The Oval Charm only needs the three Kalos Pokédexes seen, and the Torchic line isn’t in any of them.

Why the 2013 “how to download” video is a dead end

Many Torchic videos for X and Y are from October 2013 and show the Mystery Gift steps while the event was live. Following them now ends at “no gifts available” or a failed connection, which is expected. There’s no glitch, secret tile or hidden route that puts Torchic in an unmodified X or Y. Third-party save tools aren’t official and can break a save.

FAQ

Can you catch Torchic in Pokémon X or Y?

No. There’s no wild encounter, Friend Safari slot or story gift for Torchic in either version. In X and Y it only came from the 2013 internet Mystery Gift.

Is Torchic in the Friend Safari?

No. The Fire Safari has Braixen in its third slot, which is Fennekin’s evolution. No Safari type has Torchic, Combusken or Blaziken.

What was the Torchic event code?

There wasn’t one. The Torchic gift was an internet download from October 12, 2013 to January 15, 2014, with no serial code.

Does Mystery Gift still give Torchic?

No. The gift ended January 15, 2014, and internet Mystery Gift stopped working with 3DS online play on April 8, 2024. A card already in your Card Album can still be picked up at any Pokémon Center.

Can I get Speed Boost Torchic without the event?

Only by breeding or trading. The mother has to have the Hidden Ability, or a father with the Hidden Ability has to be bred with Ditto. Either way, 60% of the Eggs get Speed Boost. The Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire starter has Blaze.

How do I get Blazikenite in X and Y?

Through a local trade, held by a Pokémon, from Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire or another X or Y save that has it. No place in X and Y gives it out, and Pokémon Bank removes held items.

Can I trade Torchic from Omega Ruby to Pokémon Y?

Yes. Local wireless trades between the four Generation 6 games still work, and Pokémon Bank can move it until February 25, 2027 at 7:00 PM Pacific.

If I restart my save, do I get another Torchic?

No. Restarting only let you download the gift again while the event was running. Today a new save just loses the Torchic and the Blazikenite you had.
