Diantha is the Champion in Pokémon X and Y. You fight her in the Radiant Chamber of the Pokémon League right after the Elite Four. She has Hawlucha (Lv 64), Tyrantrum (Lv 65), Aurorus (Lv 65), Gourgeist (Lv 65), Goodra (Lv 66) and a Lv 68 Gardevoir that holds Gardevoirite and Mega Evolves. She also carries four Full Restores. Her team is the same in X and in Y. Once the Elite Four starts you can't get to a PC, so the party you walk in with has to beat all five trainers. AZ, who battles you after the Hall of Fame, isn't the Champion.

This page covers Pokémon X and Pokémon Y on Nintendo 3DS and 2DS, up to the last update, version 1.5. Both versions have the same Champion, the same Elite Four and the same Battle Chateau Diantha.
Who is the Pokémon XY Champion?
The Champion of the Kalos region is Diantha, a famous movie actress. She doesn't stick to one type, and Gardevoir is her only Fairy type. Her battle title reads Champion, and she's the last trainer before the Hall of Fame.
You meet her twice before the League, and neither meeting is a battle. The first is at Café Soleil in Lumiose City, where she's talking with Lysandre. Later she turns up again in Coumarine City.
Her name is Carne (カルネ) in Japanese, Dianthéa in French and Dianta in European Spanish. The German and Italian versions keep Diantha. The French version calls Gym Leaders "Champions d'Arène", but the League Champion is still Diantha.
Diantha's Champion team

| Pokémon | Lv | Type | Ability | Item | Moves |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hawlucha | 64 | Fighting / Flying | Limber | None | Swords Dance, Flying Press, X-Scissor, Poison Jab |
| Tyrantrum | 65 | Rock / Dragon | Strong Jaw | None | Head Smash, Earthquake, Dragon Claw, Crunch |
| Aurorus | 65 | Rock / Ice | Refrigerate | None | Thunder, Blizzard, Light Screen, Reflect |
| Gourgeist (Average Size) | 65 | Ghost / Grass | Pickup | None | Trick-or-Treat, Phantom Force, Seed Bomb, Shadow Sneak |
| Goodra | 66 | Dragon | Sap Sipper | None | Dragon Pulse, Muddy Water, Fire Blast, Focus Blast |
| Gardevoir → Mega Gardevoir | 68 | Psychic / Fairy | Trace, then Pixilate after Mega Evolution | Gardevoirite | Moonblast, Psychic, Shadow Ball, Thunderbolt |
Gardevoir is always her last Pokémon, and she Mega Evolves it the first chance she gets. The other five can come out in any order. Once Gardevoir is on the field, she has nothing left behind it.
Each of her four Full Restores heals one Pokémon to full HP and cures its status. Something you leave in the red can be back at full health on her next turn, so try to finish each Pokémon in one go.
Winning pays $16,320 before any money boost, such as an Amulet Coin.
Abilities worth knowing
Gourgeist has Pickup and Gardevoir has Trace. Pickup can grab an item another Pokémon used up, such as a Berry, at the end of a turn. Trace copies the ability of your Pokémon on the field when Gardevoir comes in. Once it Mega Evolves, its ability becomes Pixilate.
Pixilate turns Normal-type moves into Fairy moves and powers them up. Gardevoir has no Normal moves, so on this set it does nothing. Refrigerate on Aurorus is the same story. It turns Normal moves into Ice moves, and Aurorus has none. The other three abilities do come into play. Strong Jaw powers up Tyrantrum's Crunch. Sap Sipper makes Goodra immune to Grass moves, and a Grass hit raises its Attack. Limber means Hawlucha can't be paralyzed.
Gourgeist comes in four sizes with different stats. Diantha's is the Average Size, the second fastest of the four.
How to reach the Champion

- Get all eight Gym Badges. The last one is from Wulfric in Snowbelle City.
- Take Route 21 to the Victory Road gate. Ace Trainer Robbie checks your Badges and battles you there. He uses Carbink and Raichu at Lv 56 and Kingdra at Lv 57.
- Cross Victory Road. You need Surf and Strength to get through. Rock Smash and Waterfall only open extra areas and items.
- Heal, shop and set your party at the League's Pokémon Center. It's the last PC you can use.
- Beat the four Elite Four members in any order. After each win you go back to the main hall. When all four are down, the big doors at the end of the hall open to the Radiant Chamber.
Why you can't change your team
Once you step onto the first Elite Four platform, there's no PC and no way back to the Pokémon Center until the run is over. The game warns you first: one more step and you'll have to beat every one of the Elite Four or be defeated. The six Pokémon you bring have to handle Malva, Siebold, Wikstrom, Drasna and Diantha back to back.
You can still use items during and between battles. Pack plenty of Revives, Full Restores or Hyper Potions, plus something for status. If your whole team faints, the run ends and you start the Elite Four again from the first member.
The Elite Four in one paragraph
Malva uses Fire, Siebold uses Water, Wikstrom uses Steel and Drasna uses Dragon. Each has three Pokémon at Lv 63, an ace at Lv 65 and two Full Restores. Wikstrom's Aegislash can give you more trouble than Diantha does, and whatever you're saving for Mega Gardevoir has to survive Wikstrom first. Our team suggestions for the League list a counter for each member.
How to beat Diantha
Her levels run from 64 to 68. A team in the mid-60s with good type coverage is enough for most runs, and a few extra levels leave room for mistakes. Coverage counts for more than raw levels here. You want at least one strong Steel, Poison or Ghost move for Gardevoir, Fighting or Steel moves for the two fossils, and an Ice, Fairy or Dragon move for Goodra.
| Her Pokémon | 4× weak | 2× weak | Immune |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hawlucha | — | Flying, Electric, Psychic, Ice, Fairy | Ground |
| Tyrantrum | — | Fighting, Ground, Steel, Ice, Dragon, Fairy | — |
| Aurorus | Fighting, Steel | Ground, Rock, Water, Grass | — |
| Gourgeist | — | Flying, Ghost, Fire, Ice, Dark | Normal, Fighting |
| Goodra | — | Ice, Dragon, Fairy | Grass (Sap Sipper) |
| Mega Gardevoir | — | Poison, Ghost, Steel | Dragon |
Hawlucha
Hawlucha is fast and knows Swords Dance. After one boost, Flying Press can tear through a lot of teams. Flying Press counts as Fighting and Flying at the same time, so it does nothing to Ghost types. Gengar handles it well: Flying Press can't touch it, and X-Scissor and Poison Jab only do a quarter damage. Aegislash is safe too. Poison Jab can't hurt Steel, and X-Scissor doesn't do much to it. Without either of those, hit Hawlucha hard with Electric, Ice, Psychic, Flying or Fairy moves before it can set up.
Tyrantrum and Aurorus
Diantha has both Kalos fossil Pokémon in both versions. The fossil you picked in Glittering Cave doesn't change her team. Our fossil page covers getting your own.
Tyrantrum is a heavy physical hitter. Head Smash is a big Rock move that also hurts Tyrantrum, and Earthquake is there for Steel types, which resist Rock. Its Speed is low, so a fast Fighting, Steel, Ice, Fairy or Ground move usually takes it out first.
Aurorus takes four times damage from Fighting and Steel moves, so Lucario or Chesnaught can often drop it quickly. Chesnaught is weak to Ice, though, so don't switch it in on a Blizzard. Aurorus can set up Reflect and Light Screen, which cut damage for five turns, and it attacks with Blizzard and Thunder. Keep Grass, Flying, Ground and Dragon types away from that Blizzard.
Gourgeist
Trick-or-Treat adds the Ghost type to your Pokémon. Most Pokémon are then weak to her Phantom Force and Shadow Sneak. Switching out removes the extra type. Shadow Sneak is a priority move, so it usually goes first even against a faster Pokémon. Fire, Flying, Ice, Dark and Ghost moves are all super effective. Normal and Fighting moves can't hit it.
Goodra
Goodra's Special Defense is very high, so physical attacks work better than special ones. All four of its moves are special: Dragon Pulse, Muddy Water, Fire Blast and Focus Blast. Fire Blast and Focus Blast both hit Steel types hard, so a Steel Pokémon is a poor wall here. Ice, Dragon and Fairy moves are super effective. Grass moves do nothing and raise its Attack.
Mega Gardevoir

Gardevoir is her ace. Mega Gardevoir has 165 base Special Attack and 135 base Special Defense, and its four moves cover a lot of ground. Moonblast hits Dragon, Fighting and Dark types. Psychic hits Poison and Fighting types. Shadow Ball hits Ghost and Psychic types, and Thunderbolt hits Water and Flying types. Its base Speed is 100, up from 80 before Mega Evolution. In X and Y, the turn Gardevoir Mega Evolves still runs on its old Speed. Base Speed isn't the whole picture, either. Real Speed also depends on level, nature and training, and boosts, drops and priority moves change the order.
Its weaknesses are Poison, Ghost and Steel. Dragon moves can't hit it at all, so don't keep your Dragon type for the end. These options are all available in Kalos before the League:
- Korrina gives you a Lucario holding Lucarionite at the Tower of Mastery. Mega Lucario takes normal damage from all four of Gardevoir's moves. Teach it Poison Jab from TM84, sold at the Shalour City Poké Mart for $10,000, for a super-effective hit. Flash Cannon (TM91) is only in Kiloude City, so you can't get it until after the Hall of Fame.
- Gengar can use Gengarite, which a Hex Maniac in Laverre City gives you. Haunter only evolves by trade. Gengar's base Speed is 110, a little above Mega Gardevoir's 100, though real Speed stats decide who moves first. It hits with Sludge Bomb or Shadow Ball. Psychic and Shadow Ball both do double damage to Gengar, so it needs to move first.
- Aegislash's Steel moves are super effective, and Moonblast and Psychic do half damage to it. Shadow Ball does double damage, so a damaged Aegislash can lose the exchange.
- Klefki, a Steel/Fairy type, resists Moonblast and Psychic. It doesn't hit hard, but its Steel moves still do double damage.
- Any Poison attack, such as Sludge Bomb or Poison Jab, is super effective. If the user is a Poison type, watch out for Psychic.
The Mega Stones you can get before the Elite Four include Lucarionite, Gengarite and your Kanto starter's stone. You get one Mega Evolution per battle, and so does Diantha.
Rematches: Pokémon League vs Battle Chateau

After the Hall of Fame you can walk back into the Pokémon League and take on the Elite Four and Diantha as often as you like. X and Y don't raise League levels for rematches. You face the same six Pokémon, the same moves and the same four Full Restores every time. For a stronger Diantha, go to the Battle Chateau on Route 7.
| Detail | Pokémon League rematch | Battle Chateau |
|---|---|---|
| Title | Champion | Grand Duchess |
| Team | Hawlucha, Tyrantrum, Aurorus, Gourgeist, Goodra, Gardevoir | Hawlucha, Gourgeist, Goodra, Gardevoir |
| Levels | 64–68 | 60 with no writ, 50 to 80 with one |
| Mega Evolution | Yes, Gardevoirite | Yes, Gardevoirite |
| Her items | 4 Full Restores | None |
| Reward | $16,320 | $14,400 with no writ; she sometimes gives a Comet Shard |
| When | Any time after the Hall of Fame | Once you're a Grand Duke or Grand Duchess |
Grand Duchess Diantha in the Battle Chateau
Diantha joins the Chateau's nobility after you beat her in the story, but she only appears once you've reached the top rank yourself, Grand Duke or Grand Duchess. A new trainer arrives about every six minutes, picked from the trainers open to your rank, so you may have to wait for her. A Writ of Invitation from the lady by the front door makes trainers arrive twice as often.
With no writ she uses four Pokémon at Lv 60, with the same moves as her League team. A Writ of Challenge changes the level of every trainer you face until midnight:
| Writ | Diantha's level | Cost | First available at | Her prize money |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| None | 60 | — | — | $14,400 |
| Blue Writ of Challenge | 50 | $10,000 | Duke / Duchess | $12,000 |
| Writ of Challenge | 65 | $50,000 | Viscount / Viscountess | $15,600 |
| Red Writ of Challenge | 70 | $100,000 | Duke / Duchess | $16,800 |
| Black Writ of Challenge | 80 | $300,000 | Grand Duke / Grand Duchess | $19,200 |
Under any Writ of Challenge, her Pokémon drop their custom moves. Each one uses the last four moves it would know by level-up at its new level. Under the Black Writ, Gardevoir has Captivate, Hypnosis, Dream Eater and Stored Power, and Gourgeist can use Explosion. The Lv 80 team hits harder, and with level-up moves it plays very differently from the League fight.
After you win: Hall of Fame, AZ and the credits
Beating Diantha takes you to the Hall of Fame, where your team is recorded. The story then moves to a parade in Lumiose City, and AZ asks you for a battle there. He has three Pokémon, all at Lv 60, and his title is Pokémon Trainer. He's neither a second Champion nor part of the League. The credits roll after this battle.

| Pokémon | Lv | Ability | Moves |
|---|---|---|---|
| Torkoal | 60 | White Smoke | Lava Plume, Stone Edge, Body Slam, Return |
| Sigilyph | 60 | Magic Guard | Air Slash, Psychic, Cosmic Power, Return |
| Golurk | 60 | Iron Fist | Heavy Slam, Phantom Force, Mega Punch, Return |
AZ pays no prize money, and your Pokémon get no experience from the fight. The story carries on whether you win or lose.
Diantha at Café Soleil
Once you're in the Hall of Fame, Diantha waits in Café Soleil on South Boulevard in Lumiose City. She'll trade you her female Ralts, which holds Gardevoirite, for any one of your Pokémon. It's the only Gardevoirite in X and Y. Our Gardevoirite page lists the Ralts' nature and IVs.

What to do next
- Talk to Professor Sycamore at Lumiose Station to get the TMV Pass, then ride to Kiloude City.
- Beating Diantha doesn't upgrade your Mega Ring. For that you need one Battle Maison battle, a win over your rival in Kiloude and a visit to the Anistar City sundial. The steps are on our Mega Stones page.
- The Stone Emporium in Lumiose City sells a second Kanto starter Mega Stone once you're in the Hall of Fame.
- The Friend Safari in Kiloude City opens too, and you can still add friends by Friend Code. Slot 3 and Hidden Abilities need a friend who has entered the Hall of Fame and then met you through the PSS. Nintendo shut down 3DS online play on April 8, 2024 (April 9 in some regions), so that meeting now has to happen over local wireless.
Pokémon X vs Y, and other games
The two versions are identical here. Diantha's League team, her Chateau team and AZ's team are the same in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. The League and the Chateau work offline, so the end of 3DS online play doesn't affect them.
X and Y only came out on Nintendo 3DS. Pokémon Legends: Z-A on Switch is a separate game set in Lumiose City, and Diantha doesn't appear there in person. People around the city talk about her acting career, an ad in Bleu Sector 7 promotes her latest film, and in the Mega Dimension DLC her daughter Ansha says she's away filming in another region. Teams from Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, the anime and ROM hacks such as difficulty mods don't apply to X and Y either.
FAQ
Who is the Champion in Pokémon X and Y?
Diantha. She's the Kalos Champion in both versions, and you fight her in the Radiant Chamber after the Elite Four.
What Pokémon does Diantha use?
Hawlucha Lv 64, Tyrantrum Lv 65, Aurorus Lv 65, Gourgeist Lv 65, Goodra Lv 66 and Gardevoir Lv 68. Gardevoir holds Gardevoirite and Mega Evolves.
What level should I be to beat Diantha?
Her Pokémon are Lv 64–68. A team in the mid-60s with a Steel, Poison or Ghost attack for Mega Gardevoir and Fighting or Steel moves for the fossils usually works. Levels in the 70s make it easier.
Do I have to beat the Elite Four in order?
No. You can pick any of the four doors in the main hall. The door to Diantha opens after all four are beaten.
Can I change my team before fighting Diantha?
No. Once you start the Elite Four you can't reach a PC until you win or lose. You can still use items between battles.

Yes. After the Hall of Fame you can fight her again at the Pokémon League with the same team and levels. A different four-Pokémon Diantha appears in the Battle Chateau once you reach the Grand Duke or Grand Duchess rank.
Is AZ the Champion?
No. AZ battles you after the Hall of Fame, before the credits, with three Lv 60 Pokémon. His title is Pokémon Trainer.
Where is Diantha after I become Champion?
At Café Soleil on South Boulevard in Lumiose City, where she offers to trade you her Ralts. She can also show up in the Battle Chateau once you're a Grand Duke or Grand Duchess.
