Miracle Mask Puzzle 145: Merry-Go-Tiles 2 Hints and Answer

Stuck on Puzzle 145, Merry-Go-Tiles 2? Nine carousel tiles, six horse colors, and this time the tiles move as well as turn. Open the four hints one at a time and show the answer only when you want it. Layton's Challenges, The Reunion House, 80 picarats.

Puzzle 145 is Merry-Go-Tiles 2, an 80-picarat Arrange puzzle in The Reunion House, one of Layton's Challenges. Nine square tiles sit in a three-by-three frame, each showing halves of carousel horses. Your job is to make 12 complete horses, each in a single color, where the tiles meet. Unlike the first Merry-Go-Tiles, there are six colors instead of four, and the tiles can change places as well as turn.

This page covers bonus Puzzle 145 in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, the 3DS game (US and UK English). The tiles and the answer are the same in the US and UK English versions; quotes use the North American text. If you're after Daily Puzzle 145, the first Merry-Go-Tiles, or Puzzle 145 from another Layton game, see Wrong Puzzle 145? below.

Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask Puzzle 145 Merry-Go-Tiles 2: on the top screen, two children riding cream carousel horses with red saddles between twisted poles, under red curtains with yellow fringes, against a teal background; on the touch screen, a board of nine square tiles in three rows of three inside a gold frame with gold scrollwork on each side, on a teal checked background, with halves of horses in several colors that don't match up where the tiles meet

The puzzle reads: "These cheerful tiles can be put together so they form horse shapes of six different colors. With these nine tiles, you can make a total of 12 complete, uniformly-colored horses within the frame, but at the moment the colors are all mixed up! Can you match up all the colors and complete the pattern? This time you can both rotate and move the tiles." The objective bar says "Match up the horses!"

It works like Puzzle 087, Merry-Go-Tiles. Every tile has four half-horses, one on each side. A complete horse forms where two tiles meet and the front half on one tile and the back half on the other are the same color. The board has exactly 12 places where two tiles meet, so each of them has to hold one complete horse. The half-horses on the outside of the board, against the frame, don't count.

Wrong Puzzle 145?

  • Daily Puzzle 145 is Kingdom 08, from the Kingdoms set.
  • Puzzle 087, Merry-Go-Tiles, is the first carousel tile puzzle, in Pumpkin Park in Chapter 5. It has four horse colors, and the tiles only turn.
  • Puzzle 145 in another Layton game is a different puzzle. If yours doesn't show nine tiles with halves of horses on them, you're in the wrong game.

Where you find it

Puzzle 145 is one of the fifteen bonus puzzles in Layton's Challenges, which you open from the Bonuses section. The challenges are split into five houses of three puzzles each, and The Reunion House holds Puzzles 145, 146 and 147. Merry-Go-Tiles 2 is the first puzzle in that house.

The Reunion House opens once you've finished the story. You don't need to find anything else first.

Tile letters used on this page

The game's hints describe the tiles by the horses on them. This page also gives each tile a letter, A to I, by where it starts: left to right along the top row, then the middle row, then the bottom row. A tile keeps its letter wherever it moves.

The Merry-Go-Tiles 2 board at the start with gold letter badges on the nine tiles, A, B and C along the top row, D, E and F in the middle row and G, H and I along the bottom row, beside the notes Each tile has four half-horses, one on each side. A complete horse forms where two tiles meet and the halves are the same color. 12 places where tiles meet, 12 horses to make. Tiles can be turned and moved

When the horses won't match up

  • You don't know where to begin. Start with the colors that have the fewest horses, as Hint 1 suggests.
  • The pattern works in more than one direction. It does. The game accepts the pattern as it is or turned 90, 180 or 270 degrees, so pick any tile as your fixed point.
  • Half-horses around the outside don't match anything. That's how it should be. Only the 12 places where two tiles meet need a complete horse.
  • A horse looks complete but the answer is wrong. Check that the front half and the back half are exactly the same color, and that you haven't joined two fronts or two backs.

Hints, one at a time

These are the game's own hints, word for word from the North American version and in the same order. Open only the next one you need. In the game, Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two.

Hint 1: where to begin

The only way to solve this one is by trial and error. Start with the color of horse with the least number. There aren't so many pink, green, or tan ones, if you look.

Hint 2: which way it faces

The fact that every panel can be rotated means you can complete this puzzle no matter which direction the pattern faces. Does that help a little?

Hint 3: the bottom-right corner

Once you work out the correct position of one tile, the rest should all fall into place, so here's a clue:

Can you see the tile with both the front and back of a green horse on it? Put that in the bottom-right corner. But the way it faces? Now that would be telling...

Super Hint: the corner tile's facing

The tile mentioned in Hint 3 should be placed with pink on the bottom and white on the top.

Now the pieces should all come together without much difficulty. You can work out the rest by process of elimination.

Answer and full solution

The answer below shows where every tile goes and how it turns. Open it when you're ready.

Show the answer

The answer: top row G, C, F; middle row H, A, D; bottom row I, E, B. Turn A a quarter turn clockwise, D a half turn, and E and G a quarter turn counterclockwise. The other five tiles don't turn.

Merry-Go-Tiles 2 answer: the finished board with each tile's starting letter on it, G, C and F along the top row, H, A and D in the middle row and I, E and B along the bottom row, beside a list headed Start, finish and turn: A top left to center, quarter turn clockwise. B top middle to bottom right, no turn. C top right to top middle, no turn. D middle left to middle right, half turn. E center to bottom middle, quarter turn counterclockwise. F middle right to top right, no turn. G bottom left to top left, quarter turn counterclockwise. H bottom middle to middle left, no turn. I bottom right to bottom left, no turn

Step by step:

  1. The corner from the hints. B is the tile with both halves of a green horse. Put it in the bottom-right corner without turning it, so pink is on the bottom and white is on the top.
  2. The bottom row. Put E in the bottom middle, turned a quarter turn counterclockwise, and I in the bottom-left corner as it is.
  3. The middle row. Put H on the middle left as it is, A in the center, turned a quarter turn clockwise, and D on the middle right, turned upside down.
  4. The top row. Put G in the top-left corner, turned a quarter turn counterclockwise, then C in the top middle and F in the top-right corner, both as they are.
  5. Check all 12 places where two tiles meet: each should show one complete horse in a single color. Then submit.

The game says: "You're a neightural! This pattern works as it is or rotated 90, 180, or 270 degrees! With all six colors matching, it looks very pleasing to the eye, don't you think?" The finished pattern also appears on the top screen.

The finished puzzle: on the top screen, the completed board in its gold frame on a teal checked background; on the touch screen, the same nine tiles with every pair of halves where two tiles meet forming one complete horse in a single color
Illustration of the finished board, with 12 complete horses.

If it still doesn't work out:

  • Your board is the same pattern turned round. That's fine. The game accepts the pattern in any of its four directions.
  • You turned a quarter-turn tile the wrong way. A quarter turn clockwise and a quarter turn counterclockwise end up facing opposite ways. Only where the tile ends up counts, so three quarter turns one way are the same as one quarter turn the other way.
  • The game says a horse's behind isn't the right color. Find the place where the colors don't match and check the two tiles there against the table.

Picarats, hints and hint coins

Merry-Go-Tiles 2 shows 80 picarats when it starts. The puzzle can award 80, 72 or 64 picarats. Wrong answers may reduce the picarat value. A wrong answer brings "Too bad." and then "There must be a poor little horsey whose behind isn't the same color as the rest of it..."

Hints cost hint coins, not picarats. Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two, five in total. There are no hint coins to find in Layton's Challenges, so you'll spend coins saved from the story, or you can use the free hints on this page.

Does it unlock anything?

No. It doesn't give you an item. You get the picarats, and it counts toward the fifteen Layton's Challenges. Solve all fifteen and the game congratulates you: "Congratulations! You solved all 15 of Layton's Challenges!"

Versions

  • Nintendo 3DS family: this page covers the 3DS game. You work with the tiles on the touch screen, and the top screen shows a pair of carousel horses.
  • US and UK English versions: the tiles, the colors and the answer are the same, and so is the name. The UK text differs only in spelling and small details of wording.

The scene around the puzzle

There's no story scene for the bonus puzzles. The top screen shows two children riding carousel horses. When you solve the puzzle, it shows the finished tile pattern instead.
