Din’s Fire at a glance
Din’s Fire is one of the three magic spells in Ocarina of Time 3D. The game describes it as “Offensive magic that draws on the power of the goddess Din to create a fiery dome centered around you.” It comes from a Great Fairy at Hyrule Castle, you can only collect it as young Link, and you will need it later as adult Link at the Shadow Temple.

Where to get Din’s Fire

- You need bombs, so get the Bomb Bag in Dodongo’s Cavern. Then get the Magic Meter from the Great Fairy at the top of Death Mountain Trail. She sends you on: “Head to the path leading to Hyrule Castle. One of my friends awaits you there, at a dead end in the road.”
- Go to Hyrule Castle as young Link. Leave Castle Town by the road to the castle and go through the gatehouse.
- The Dead End is just past the gatehouse. A side path ends at a sign that reads “Dead End”, with a boulder at the end of the path.
- Blow up the boulder with a bomb, then crawl through the hole behind it.
- Stand on the Triforce mark in front of the fountain and play Zelda’s Lullaby. The Great Fairy of Magic appears (“Welcome, Link! I am the Great Fairy of Magic! I will give you a magic spell.”) and gives you Din’s Fire.

On the Din’s Fire get screen the game says: “Its fireball engulfs everything! It’s attack magic”. As she leaves, the fairy adds: “You can use Din’s Fire not only to attack but also to burn things!”
How to use Din’s Fire on 3DS
Open the item screen and put Din’s Fire on Y or X, or on one of the I and II slots on the touch screen. Press the button, or tap the slot, and Link sends out a dome of fire that can damage several enemies in range. Each cast costs 12 magic, so a full normal meter gives you four casts, or eight after the Great Fairy doubles it. The item screen labels it “Magic Cost: High”.
When your magic runs out, refill it with green Magic Jars from grass and enemies or a Green Potion, or visit any Great Fairy. The Great Fairy locations page lists every fountain.
What Din’s Fire is for

| Place | What it does | Required? |
|---|---|---|
| Shadow Temple entrance (Graveyard) | Lights all the torches around the circle at once and opens the temple | Yes, for the normal solution |
| Shadow Temple | Burns the wooden walls in front of the Boss Key chest | Yes |
| Dodongo’s Cavern | Sets off Bomb Flowers, so it can drop the big staircase when you come back | No |
| Any dungeon | Lights torches and burns webs | No |
| Fights | Damages several enemies in range at once | No |
Fire Arrows are adult-only and cheaper (“Magic Cost: Low”), but they don’t replace Din’s Fire at the Boss Key in the Shadow Temple, and lighting the entrance torches with arrows is a hard trick rather than the normal way in.
Din’s Fire problems
- If the Great Fairy doesn’t appear, get the Magic Meter from the Death Mountain Trail Great Fairy first, and stand on the Triforce mark when you play Zelda’s Lullaby.
- If nothing happens when you cast it, check the green Magic Meter. Each cast needs 12 magic, a quarter of a normal meter.
- If the Shadow Temple torches won’t light, stand in the middle of the circle so all the torches are inside the dome, and use Din’s Fire itself, not a charged spin attack.
- If you are already adult, clear the Forest Temple, talk to Sheik in the Temple of Time, put the Master Sword back in its pedestal to become young Link again, then fetch the spell.
The Sheikah Stone hint video for the spell is called “Din’s Blessing”; it is in the Items and Techniques hint list. For the other spells and items, see the item list.
Din’s Fire FAQ
Where do you get Din’s Fire in Ocarina of Time 3D?
From the Great Fairy of Magic at Hyrule Castle. As young Link, take the road up from Castle Town, go through the gatehouse and follow the path to the sign that says “Dead End”. Blow up the boulder with a bomb, crawl through the hole and play Zelda’s Lullaby on the Triforce mark.
What do you need before you can get Din’s Fire?
Bombs, so you need the Bomb Bag from Dodongo’s Cavern, and the Magic Meter from the Great Fairy at the top of Death Mountain Trail. You also need Zelda’s Lullaby.
Can adult Link get Din’s Fire?
No. Get it as young Link. After the seven-year jump Hyrule Castle is gone, and the Great Fairy outside Ganon’s Castle gives a different upgrade.
How do you use Din’s Fire on 3DS?
Put it on Y, X, or one of the I and II touch-screen slots, then press the button or tap the slot. Link casts a dome of fire around himself that can damage several enemies in range. Each cast costs 12 magic: four casts from a full normal meter, or eight once the meter is doubled.
Is Din’s Fire required?
Yes, in a normal playthrough. You need it to light the torches at the entrance of the Shadow Temple, and inside the temple it burns away the wooden walls in front of the Boss Key.
Is holding the sword for a spin attack the same as Din’s Fire?
No. After the Death Mountain Great Fairy, a charged spin attack uses magic and glows, but it is a sword move. It won’t light the Shadow Temple torches. Din’s Fire is a separate item you cast from a button.
