Bunny Mask in Ocarina of Time 3D: Getting and Selling the Bunny Hood

The bunny mask in OoT 3D is the Bunny Hood. How to borrow it, what it really does, who buys it after 8 PM, and how many Rupees each wallet gets you.

The bunny mask is the Bunny Hood

In Ocarina of Time 3D the bunny mask is called the Bunny Hood. It is the fourth mask young Link borrows from the Happy Mask Shop in Hyrule Castle Town. You sell it to the Running Man in Hyrule Field, pay the shop 50 Rupees, and then you can borrow it again whenever you like. It does not make Link faster in this game. What it does is keep Stalchildren away in Hyrule Field at night.

Does the Bunny Hood make Link faster?

No. Link runs, rolls and jumps exactly the same with the hood on. The ears flop around, and that is all. The speed boost people remember is from Majora’s Mask, where the Bunny Hood does make Link run faster. Some mods and randomizers add the same effect to Ocarina of Time, but the normal 3DS game does not.

The one who does get faster is the Running Man. After he buys the hood he wears it himself and runs much faster than before. Talk to him later and he says: “I bet nobody is faster than I am now! But I don’t know if I should be happy or sad...”

What the Bunny Hood does in Ocarina of Time 3D

  • No Stalchildren at night. In Hyrule Field after dark, skeleton Stalchildren keep rising out of the ground around young Link. With the Bunny Hood on, they do not appear, so you can cross the field at night in peace.
  • It sells for a full wallet. The Running Man pays far more than the mask is worth: 500 Rupees, capped at your wallet’s limit, so the sale fills whatever wallet you have.
  • People notice it. Some townspeople comment on the ears. One even hints at the buyer: “Oh! A rabbit! Speaking of rabbits, I saw a strange man chasing rabbits around...”

It does not protect you from anything else, and keeping Stalchildren away only matters at night, since they do not appear in the daytime. Townspeople still react to it during the day.

How to get the Bunny Hood

The Bunny Hood is the fourth and last mask you sell in the mask quest, so you have to get through the first three first. The mask quest page covers those sales in full; this is the short version.

  1. Open the Happy Mask Shop. Show Zelda’s Letter to the guard at the Death Mountain Trail gate in Kakariko Village. The shop in the Market then opens in the daytime. See how to open the Happy Mask Shop.
  2. Sell the first three masks. Keaton Mask to the Kakariko gate guard, Skull Mask to the Skull Kid in the Lost Woods, Spooky Mask to the boy in Kakariko Graveyard. Pay the shop back after each one.
  3. Borrow the Bunny Hood. After you pay for the Spooky Mask, the shop lists “Bunny Hood — Price 50 Rupees With swinging rabbit ears!” You do not pay up front; you pay after you sell it.
  4. Put it on. The game tells you: “Wear it with I, X, Y, or II to show it off!” Assign it to one of those slots on the Touch Screen, then press X or Y, or tap I or II, to wear it. Do it again to take it off.

Selling it to the Running Man

The Running Man is the only person who buys the Bunny Hood. Three things trip people up:

  • He is not there yet. He only appears in Hyrule Field once young Link has all three Spiritual Stones: the Kokiri Emerald, the Goron Ruby and the Zora Sapphire. You do not need the Ocarina of Time.
  • He will not stop. From 5 AM to 8 PM he runs laps around the outside of Lon Lon Ranch and you cannot talk to him. After 8 PM he sits down on flat ground. Night falls at 6 PM, so after the Sun’s Song follow him until he sits.
  • You are not wearing it. Carrying the hood is not enough. Put it on, then talk to him.

Without the hood he only talks about rabbits: “I want to become a rabbit... Listen to the wind with those ears, hop across the ground with those legs...” With it on, he cannot believe his eyes: “Oh, these are genuine rabbit ears from the animal of legend!” Say yes when he asks, “I don’t care how expensive it is! Please sell it to me!” The Running Man page has his route around the ranch.

How many Rupees you get

He adds 500 Rupees, capped at your wallet’s limit, so the sale always leaves you with a full wallet. The game puts it this way: “It’s a 50-Rupee mask, but he paid you a crazy amount of money for it—more money than you can count!” Then you owe the shop 50.

A bigger wallet means a bigger payday. Young Link can get the Adult’s Wallet for 10 Gold Skulltula tokens and the Giant’s Wallet for 30 at the House of Skulltula, so it pays to sell the hood after that. See the biggest wallet in Ocarina of Time 3D and the Gold Skulltula rewards.

After the sale

  • Pay the shop. The owner says: “Oh, great! You sold it! Please pay me back 50 Rupees for the Bunny Hood now.” You cannot borrow another mask until you do.
  • Borrow it again for free. After you pay, the shelf reads “Bunny Hood — Free to Borrow”. Take it back any time you want to cross Hyrule Field at night.
  • The Mask of Truth. Pay back the 50 Rupees and the shopkeeper lends you the Mask of Truth. After that, the Goron, Zora and Gerudo Masks are available to borrow too. You can only hold one mask at a time. See the Mask of Truth.
  • The Running Man keeps it. From then on he wears the hood and runs at a much faster pace. As adult Link you meet him again in Gerudo Valley for a race you cannot win; that is on the Running Man page.

Master Quest and Majora’s Mask

In Master Quest the Bunny Hood is the same mask with the same price, buyer and effect. The world is mirrored, so the Running Man’s laps around Lon Lon Ranch go the other way on the map.

In Majora’s Mask the Bunny Hood comes from a different character and makes Link run faster. Tips for that game do not apply here.

Bunny Hood FAQ

What is the bunny mask in Ocarina of Time 3D?

It is the Bunny Hood, a mask with long rabbit ears from the Happy Mask Shop in Hyrule Castle Town. Young Link borrows it and sells it to the Running Man in Hyrule Field.

Does the Bunny Hood make Link faster in Ocarina of Time 3D?

No. Link runs at the same speed with or without it. The speed boost is from Majora’s Mask. In Ocarina of Time 3D it is the Running Man who gets faster after he buys it.

What does the Bunny Hood do?

While you wear it, Stalchildren do not rise out of the ground in Hyrule Field at night. Otherwise it is a trade item for the mask quest: the Running Man buys it.

How do I get the Bunny Hood?

Open the Happy Mask Shop, sell the Keaton Mask, Skull Mask and Spooky Mask in that order and pay the shop back each time. After you pay for the Spooky Mask, the Bunny Hood is the next mask you can borrow.

Who buys the Bunny Hood?

The Running Man in Hyrule Field. He only appears once young Link has all three Spiritual Stones, and he only talks after 8 PM, when he sits down to rest.

How much do you get for the Bunny Hood?

He adds 500 Rupees, capped at what your wallet holds, so the sale leaves you with 99 Rupees in the starting wallet, 200 in the Adult’s Wallet or 500 in the Giant’s Wallet. The shop then wants 50 of it.

Can I get the Bunny Hood back after selling it?

Yes. Once you pay the shop the 50 Rupees, the Bunny Hood is free to borrow again. The shopkeeper also lends you the Mask of Truth, and after that the Goron, Zora and Gerudo Masks. You can only borrow one mask at a time.
