Miracle Mask Puzzle 036: Going Dough-Nuts! Hints and Answer

Stuck on Puzzle 036, Going Dough-Nuts!? Twelve four-glaze doughnuts, and three were made by the mother. Find Yuming in Gallery Plaza, open the hints one at a time, then reveal the answer. 30 picarats.

Puzzle 036 is Going Dough-Nuts!, a 30-picarat Select puzzle from Yuming in Gallery Plaza in Chapter 3. A family of three runs a mobile doughnut shop, and every doughnut has four glazes: brown, white, orange and pink. Three of the 12 doughnuts on the tray were made by the mother, in her own way. Tap her three doughnuts on the touch screen, then touch Submit. A doughnut can be turned over, and turning it over changes the order of its glazes. It doesn't look like a puzzle the story needs, since it doesn't appear to give a reward.

This page covers story Puzzle 036 in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask on Nintendo 3DS, in the US and UK English versions, quoting the North American text. If you're connecting ancient glyphs, you're on Daily Puzzle 036 instead: see Wrong Puzzle 036? below.

Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask Puzzle 036 Going Dough-Nuts!: an orange doughnut van with a girl holding a tray of doughnuts, a woman waving and a man in a top hat at the serving window, and on the touch screen 12 doughnuts in three rows of four, each with brown, white, orange and pink glaze

The puzzle says: "A family of three runs a mobile doughnut shop. Their most popular item is a four-glaze doughnut. There are 12 doughnuts here, three of which were made by the mother of the family. She makes doughnuts in her own unique way. Can you find the mother's doughnuts? The glaze on the doughnuts is the same on both sides, by the way. But keep in mind that flipping one will change the order of the glazes!" The objective bar says, "Which doughnuts are hers?"

The top screen shows the family's orange doughnut van, with a girl holding a tray of doughnuts, a woman waving and a man in a top hat at the serving window. The touch screen shows the 12 doughnuts in three rows of four. They're all the same size and shape, and each one has four glazes in four quarters.

How you answer

  • Tap a doughnut to select it. A selected doughnut gets a pale outline. Tap it again to deselect it.
  • Select three and touch Submit. The game checks every doughnut, so leave exactly three selected. An extra one counts as a wrong answer.
  • Turning a doughnut over. Both sides carry the same glazes, but seen from the other side the order runs the other way round. You can't turn the doughnuts over on the touch screen; you have to picture it.

How this page numbers the doughnuts

The game doesn't number the doughnuts. On this page they're numbered 1 to 12 in reading order: 1 to 4 along the top row from left to right, 5 to 8 in the middle row and 9 to 12 in the bottom row.

VersionPuzzle name
North AmericaGoing Dough-Nuts!
UK EnglishGoing Dough-nuts!
Japanese4色ドーナツ (Yonshoku Dōnatsu, "four-colour doughnuts")

The Japanese title is 4色ドーナツ. The UK English title is probably written Going Dough-nuts!, with a lower-case n.

The UK English text probably words the question a little differently. It calls the doughnut "the celebrated Four-Colour Doughnut", says "Apparently, you can tell which three those are just by looking at them!" and leaves out the warning about flipping. The board and the answer are the same in the US and UK English versions.

Wrong Puzzle 036?

  • Daily Puzzle 036 in Miracle Mask is a different puzzle: Mural 03, from the Vault of the Ancients set (Tomb 03, from the Tomb of the Ancients set, in the UK version). You connect ancient glyphs, and there are no doughnuts in it.
  • Puzzle 036 in another Layton game is a different puzzle. If yours doesn't show 12 glazed doughnuts, you're in the wrong game.

Where you get it

In Chapter 3, Yuming appears in Gallery Plaza once you've looked around Henry's Study and your objective reads "Go to Dalston's Mansion!". She seems to stay there until the objective changes to "Listen to the Tiger's Tale!". She stands on the left side of the plaza, in front of the gallery steps, in a green coat.

She opens with, "Your hat is absolutely exquisite. I love the whole classic-gentleman look. I'm Yuming, by the way." Then: "I hear English gentlemen appreciate a good puzzle. You should enjoy this." If you quit, she says, "Hmmm... Perhaps I was mistaken about English gentlemen." When you come back to try again, she asks, "You do like puzzles, don't you?"

Gallery Plaza has four hint coins: under the pillar on the left, on the roof of the gallery, on the pole on the right and on the tower on the left.

If you leave Chapter 3 without solving it, it's probably sent to Nanna Grams (known as Elizabeth in the UK version) at the start of Chapter 5. Missed puzzles can be picked up later, but not every hidden puzzle is, so it's safest to solve it while you're there.

If you can't find Yuming

  • Too early: she doesn't appear to be in the plaza until you've been to Henry's Study and been told to go to Dalston's mansion.
  • Too late: once the objective reads "Listen to the Tiger's Tale!", she seems to be gone. The puzzle then probably goes to Nanna Grams at the start of Chapter 5.

Hints, one at a time

These are the game's own hints, word for word from the North American version and in the same order. Open only the next one you need. In the game, Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two.

Hint 1: What sets them apart?

The size and shape of all 12 doughnuts is the same, but there is a way of telling the difference between them. Can you identify what it is?

Hint 2: Look at the glaze

The size and shape is the same for all doughnuts, so you can only distinguish them by looking at the glaze. Try looking for three doughnuts with the same glaze pattern.

Hint 3: Turning one over

If you turn over the doughnuts, the order of the glazes will change too. For example, a doughnut where the glazes are brown, white, orange, and pink going clockwise will be the same as one that's brown, pink, orange, and white going clockwise when you flip it over. Keep this in mind when looking for the group of three.

Super Hint: Start with the top row

Look at the first row. The order of the glazes is the same for three of them but different for the second doughnut from the left. That one was made by the mother of the family. Now you just need to look for the two doughnuts that match it.

Answer and full solution

The answer below names the three doughnuts and shows how to check every one, with a picture of the solved puzzle. Open it when you're ready.

Show the answer

The mother made doughnuts 2, 9 and 12: the second from the left in the top row and the far-left and far-right ones in the bottom row. Select those three and nothing else, then touch Submit. They're the only three where the white glaze sits opposite the brown glaze.

The 12 doughnuts numbered 1 to 12, each labelled with the glaze opposite its brown quarter: orange for 1, 3, 4, 6 and 11, pink for 5, 7, 8 and 10, and white for 2, 9 and 12, which are circled
Illustration of which glaze sits opposite the brown on each doughnut. Only 2, 9 and 12 have white there.
Each doughnut's glazes, read clockwise from the brown quarter
DoughnutClockwise from brownOpposite brown
1 (top row, 1st)brown, white, orange, pinkorange
2 (top row, 2nd)brown, pink, white, orangewhite
3 (top row, 3rd)brown, pink, orange, whiteorange
4 (top row, 4th)brown, pink, orange, whiteorange
5 (middle row, 1st)brown, white, pink, orangepink
6 (middle row, 2nd)brown, white, orange, pinkorange
7 (middle row, 3rd)brown, white, pink, orangepink
8 (middle row, 4th)brown, orange, pink, whitepink
9 (bottom row, 1st)brown, orange, white, pinkwhite
10 (bottom row, 2nd)brown, orange, pink, whitepink
11 (bottom row, 3rd)brown, white, orange, pinkorange
12 (bottom row, 4th)brown, orange, white, pinkwhite

Step by step:

  1. Read each doughnut clockwise, starting from brown. Doughnut 1, for example, goes brown, white, orange, pink.
  2. Allow for flipping. Turned over, brown, white, orange, pink becomes brown, pink, orange, white, which is how doughnuts 3 and 4 read. So 1, 3 and 4 are the same kind of doughnut, just as the Super Hint says.
  3. Use the colour opposite brown as a shortcut. With four colours in a ring, turning or flipping a doughnut never changes which colour sits opposite the brown. Once you know that colour, you know which group the doughnut belongs to. This is the same grouping the game's hints ask for, done one quarter at a time.
  4. Sort all 12. Orange is opposite brown on five doughnuts (1, 3, 4, 6 and 11). Pink is opposite brown on four (5, 7, 8 and 10). White is opposite brown on only three (2, 9 and 12).
  5. The group of three is the mother's. On her doughnuts the brown never touches the white; it always sits between the orange and the pink. Select 2, 9 and 12 and touch Submit.
Going Dough-Nuts! solved: the doughnut van closed at dusk with its sign board covered, and on the touch screen the second doughnut in the top row and the first and last doughnuts in the bottom row selected with pale outlines
Illustration of the mother's three doughnuts selected, and the van closed up at dusk.

If your answer keeps failing:

  • Check that exactly three doughnuts have a pale outline. Tap any extra one again to deselect it.
  • Don't stop at the top row. Doughnuts 9 and 12 don't look like doughnut 2 at first glance, because their colours run the other way round. They're doughnut 2 flipped over.
  • Look where the white is. If it touches the brown, it isn't one of the mother's.

The game's message when you're right says, "The mother of the family made the second doughnut from the left in the top row and the far-left and far-right ones on the bottom row. If you look carefully, you'll notice the doughnuts are glazed in slightly different ways. Then it's just a case of finding a group of three doughnuts that match in some way and are different from the rest."

Picarats, hints and hint coins

Going Dough-Nuts! shows 30 picarats when it starts. The puzzle can award 30, 24 or 18 picarats. Wrong answers may reduce the picarat value. A wrong answer gets "Too bad. They all look equally delicious, whoever made them!"

Hints cost hint coins, not picarats. The costs are one coin each for the first three hints and two for the Super Hint, five in total. Gallery Plaza has only four coins, so they can't pay for every hint on their own. Or use the free hints on this page and save your coins.

Does it unlock anything?

It doesn't appear to. Solving it gives you the picarats and a short chat with Yuming about the Masked Gentleman, but no item or minigame piece seems to come with it.

Versions

  • US and UK English versions: the same 12 doughnuts and the same answer. The UK question is worded a little differently, as described under Puzzle names.

After the puzzle

When you solve it, Yuming says, "This Masked Gentleman certainly is puzzling. I heard he turned a group of people into stone. I wonder how he does it." Layton replies, "He's claiming he performed some sort of miracle. I suspect there's more to it than that. Or less to it, if you will." Yuming tells him, "The police are investigating the matter, but a gentleman like yourself may be better equipped to solve such a mystery. You should look into investigating the Masked Gentleman!" Layton laughs: "Ha ha. Yes. I may just do that."

Talk to her again afterwards and she says, "You must tell me where you picked up your hat. It just suits you so well."

FAQ

Where is the answer to Puzzle 036?

It's in the Answer and full solution section above, hidden until you open it. If you only want a push, open the hints one at a time first.

Where is Puzzle 036?

In Gallery Plaza in Chapter 3. Talk to Yuming, the woman in the green coat, after you've looked around Henry's Study.

Does flipping a doughnut change its pattern?

It changes the direction. The glazes are the same on both sides, but a flipped doughnut shows them in the opposite order going clockwise, so two doughnuts can match even when their colours seem to run the other way.

How many picarats is Puzzle 036 worth?

It shows 30 picarats when it starts. It can award 30, 24 or 18. Wrong answers may reduce the picarat value.

Is Daily Puzzle 036 the same as Puzzle 036?

No. Daily Puzzle 036 is Mural 03, from the Vault of the Ancients set (Tomb 03, from the Tomb of the Ancients set, in the UK version). You connect ancient glyphs in it. Story Puzzle 036 is Yuming's doughnut puzzle.
