Puzzle 067 is Language of Love, a 30-picarat Select puzzle that Nils gives you in the Merchant District of Monte d'Or, during Chapter 5. Luke solves it. A man's girlfriend has hidden a message for him somewhere in their hotel room, and he has to touch two specific things to find it. The room fills the top screen, and you use the touch screen to point at things and touch them. Solving it opens the fifth Toy Robot course, Perilous Pyramid.
This page covers story Puzzle 067 in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask on Nintendo 3DS (US and UK English), using the North American text. If you're after Daily Puzzle 067 or Puzzle 67 from another Layton game, see Wrong Puzzle 067? below.

What Puzzle 067 is
| Name | Language of Love |
|---|---|
| Type | Select (touch things in the room) |
| Picarats | 30 |
| Location | Merchant District, Monte d'Or |
| Chapter | Chapter 5 |
| Given by | Nils |
| Solved by | Luke |
| When it's there | From the start of Chapter 5, when your objective reads "Continue the Investigation!", through "Head to City Hall!", "Go to the Racetrack!", "Speak to the Manager!" and "Ask about the Cart!"; Nils's puzzle is gone once it reads "Go to Meet Henry!" |
| Reward | Toy Robot course 5, Perilous Pyramid |
| Previous puzzle number | Puzzle 066, A Trip to the Hospital (City Monument) |
| Next puzzle number | Puzzle 068, Days of Rest (Madame Lapushka's) |
The question reads: "My girlfriend says she's hidden a message for me somewhere in our hotel room. Apparently, I need to touch two specific items to find this message. Can you help me find it?" The objective bar at the top of the touch screen says "Where's the message?"
You use the touch screen like a touch pad to move a pointer around the room on the top screen and touch things with it. Eight things react when you touch them, from the suitcase on the rug to the teddy bear on the dresser and the handle on the door. You can have only two things changed at once. If two are already changed and you touch a third, the game says "You don't have any moves left." Touching something you've already changed puts it back the way it was, so you can keep trying new pairs. There's no wrong answer to submit: a pair that isn't the right one just does nothing, and the puzzle ends as soon as the right two things are changed.
Puzzle names
| Version | Puzzle name |
|---|---|
| North America | Language of Love |
| UK | Language of Love |
| Japanese | 彼女のいたずら (Kanojo no Itazura, "her little prank") |
The UK version uses the same name, and its question is worded a little differently: "My girlfriend says she's hidden a message for me somewhere in our hotel room, and I'll have to touch two things in order to find it. Apparently, there's no way to find it by touching only one thing. Can you help me find it?"
Wrong Puzzle 067?
- Daily Puzzle 067 is Ghosts 07, from the Ghouls and Guards set.
- Puzzle 67 in another Layton game is a different puzzle. If yours isn't about a hidden message in a hotel room, you're in the wrong game.
Where you get it
Puzzle 067 comes at the start of Chapter 5. Once your objective reads "Continue the Investigation!", Nils is in the Merchant District, the shopping street lined with shop fronts and a row of palm trees in the middle. He stands in the road, left of the palm trees. He's been thinking about Dalston's arrest: "Dalston got arrested for performing miracles without a license, eh? Tragic. The more I think about it, the more I don't know..." He adds, "If Dalston freaks everyone out, his hotels go bust. Doesn't make sense." Then he says, "Those guys couldn't crack a soft-boiled egg, much less a criminal case. This puzzle had them all stumped for days." and the puzzle starts.

Nils stays in the Merchant District while your objective reads "Continue the Investigation!", "Head to City Hall!", "Go to the Racetrack!", "Speak to the Manager!" and "Ask about the Cart!", and his puzzle is gone once you're told to "Go to Meet Henry!". The story doesn't need it. If you miss it, it goes to Nanna Grams (known as Elizabeth in the UK version) at the start of Chapter 7.
The Merchant District has four hint coins, all in the normal view.
- The side of the shop on the right, low down on the front of the yellow corner shop.
- The balloon in the sky.
- The plant on the right, hanging on the right-hand building.
- The street lamp on the wall of the green building on the left.
Each coin can be collected only once. These are the same four coins as on your Chapter 3 visit for Puzzle 029, so if you tapped them then, there's nothing left to pick up here.
When you're stuck
- "You don't have any moves left." Two things are already changed. Touch one of them again to put it back, then try something else.
- You changed two things and nothing happened. That isn't the right pair. The game doesn't count it as a wrong answer, so put one back and keep trying.
- You're not sure what everything does. Change one thing at a time, watch the whole room, then touch it again to put it back. That way you learn what all eight do without running out of moves.
- You can't find the puzzle. Nils gives it to you in the Merchant District in Chapter 5, standing in the road left of the palm trees. Talk to him.
Hints, one at a time
These are the game's own hints, word for word from the North American version and in the same order. Open only the next one you need. In the game, Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two.
Hint 1: Explore the room
First, try touching everything you can in the room and see what happens.
Hint 2: Try pairs
You need to touch two things in order to see the message. Try different combinations of things.
Hint 3: The first thing to try
Did you try turning off the room light? The switch is by the door.
Super Hint: The second thing
There's something odd about the desk lamp. You'd be able to find out what if the room wasn't so bright...
Answer and full solution
The answer below covers every step, with pictures of the finished puzzle. Open it when you're ready.
Show the answer
The answer: turn off the room light with the light switch by the door, and turn on the desk lamp. The order doesn't matter. With the room dark and the lamp on, a heart shows up in the circle of lamplight on the desk, and the puzzle is solved. The game's answer text says: "That's right! Turn off the light, turn on the lamp, and illuminate a message of true love!"

Step by step:
- Turn off the room light. Move the pointer to the light switch, the small white plate on the wall to the right of the door, above the dresser with the teddy bear, and touch it. The room goes dark.
- Turn on the desk lamp. Move the pointer to the lamp on the left end of the desk and touch it. It lights up a circle on the desk.
- Look at the circle of light. A heart appears in it. That's the girlfriend's message, and the puzzle is solved straight away.

If the message won't show up:
- You've already changed two other things. Only two things can be changed at once, so the game says "You don't have any moves left." Touch those things again to put them back, then try the light switch and the desk lamp.
- The lamp is on but the room is still bright. The message only shows in the dark. Turn off the room light too.
- The room is dark but nothing appears. Turning off the light alone isn't enough. Turn on the desk lamp.
- You touched one of the two a second time. That changes it back. If the room light comes back on or the lamp goes out, touch it once more.
Picarats, hints and hint coins
Language of Love shows 30 picarats when it starts. Its three picarat values are all 30. There's no answer to submit: the puzzle ends as soon as the right two things are changed. If you leave the puzzle without solving it, Nils says, "What? You couldn't solve it either?" Talk to him again and he says, "Figures..." before the puzzle starts again.
Hints cost hint coins, not picarats. Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two, five in total. The Merchant District's four coins cover Hints 1 to 3 but not the Super Hint, and only if you didn't already collect them in Chapter 3. Or use the free hints on this page and save your coins.
What it unlocks
Solving Language of Love opens the fifth course of the Toy Robot minigame in the Professor's trunk, Perilous Pyramid. Solving it also adds its picarats to your total and counts toward the puzzles you've solved.
Versions
- Nintendo 3DS family: this page covers the 3DS game. You move the pointer with the stylus on the touch screen and touch things in the room on the top screen.
- US and UK English versions: the name, the room, the hints and the answer are the same in the US and UK English versions. The UK question is worded differently, as quoted under Puzzle names.
The scene around the puzzle
Before the puzzle, Layton says, "Yes, there is much about the Masked Gentleman that is still a mystery." Luke asks, "Professor, you did say that the culprit is probably wealthy, right?" Layton answers, "Yes. But I do not believe Dalston is guilty." Nils says, "Well, don't look to the police to figure that out on their own."
Once the puzzle is solved, Nils says, "You're a clever one, indeed." Luke asks, "Nils, you seem well informed about police business. How do you know so much?" Nils answers, "Because the police talk more than they solve. They've botched several cases over the years, and they like to chat about them." He goes on, "I was thinking about joining them since this Masked Gentleman stuff started." and "That guy is very dangerous. But it's really sad when you think about it." Then he adds, "He's got magical powers, yet he spends his time terrorizing the town?! How many real problems could he solve with his powers?" and "All that potential for good and he's just doing advanced vandalism? This guy is just a selfish thug, if you ask me." Layton replies, "Those are harsh words, but I can't entirely disagree with you." Nils ends with, "Doesn't matter. He's been caught, right? Or at least someone that will take the fall has been caught."
Talk to him again and he says, "It wouldn't surprise me if they had the wrong guy, knowing our police department."
