Puzzle 068 is Days of Rest, a 30-picarat Select puzzle from Madame Lapushka in her costume boutique in Monte d'Or, during Chapter 5. In the UK English version she's called Ludmilla. Seven shopkeepers, A to G, are each going to close their shop one day a week, and no two of them can pick the same day. Five of them have already circled the days they'd be happy with on a chart, and the last two, Mr. A and Ms. C, add their own conditions. You mark one day for each shopkeeper on the chart and touch Submit. The story doesn't need it, and it doesn't give a reward.
This page covers story Puzzle 068 in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask on Nintendo 3DS (US and UK English), using the North American text. If you're after Daily Puzzle 068 or Puzzle 68 from another Layton game, see Wrong Puzzle 068? below.

What Puzzle 068 is
| Name | Days of Rest |
|---|---|
| Type | Select (tap cells on the chart, then touch Submit) |
| Picarats | 30 |
| Location | Madame Lapushka's, the costume boutique in Monte d'Or |
| Chapter | Chapter 5 |
| Given by | Madame Lapushka (Ludmilla in the UK English version) |
| When it's there | From the start of Chapter 5, when your objective reads "Continue the Investigation!", until your objective becomes "Catch the Masked Gentleman!" |
| Reward | None |
| Previous puzzle number | Puzzle 067, Language of Love (Merchant District) |
| Next puzzle number | Puzzle 069, Toppings Up! 2 (Montsarton Gallery) |
The puzzle opens with three of the shopkeepers talking. Mr. B says, "Now then. As you know, we're all going to close our shops for one day a week, but we all have to pick a different day. The other shopkeepers already circled the days they'd be happy with, so it's just you two left." Mr. A answers, "I'll close on whichever day. As long as it's not Sunday." Ms. C adds, "Oh, I'll just close on the day before Mr. A. That's okay, right?" Then the question: "In the end, which day did each of the seven shopkeepers take as their day off?" The objective bar at the top of the touch screen says "Arrange the days off!"
The chart has a row for each shopkeeper, A to G, and a column for each day, Mon to Sun. Rows A and C are left open, because Mr. A and Ms. C haven't circled anything. The other five rows show the days each shopkeeper circled:
- Mr. B: Tuesday or Friday.
- Mr. D: Monday, Friday or Sunday.
- Ms. E: Wednesday, Thursday or Sunday.
- Dr. F: Monday, Wednesday or Friday.
- Mr. G: Tuesday or Sunday.
On the touch screen, tapping a cell puts an orange dot in it, and tapping it again takes the dot away. You can tap any cell in rows A and C, but in the other rows only the circled cells respond. When every shopkeeper has the day you want, touch Submit. The game accepts only one arrangement: one dot in each row, seven different days, and no extra dots anywhere.
Puzzle names
| Version | Puzzle name |
|---|---|
| North America | Days of Rest |
| UK | Days of Rest |
| Japanese | 定休日はいつ? (Teikyūbi wa Itsu?, "when is the regular day off?") |
The UK version uses the same name, and its text is worded a little differently, with Mr A saying "I'm happy to close on any day, me. Long as it's not Sunday.", but the chart, the conditions and the answer are the same.
Wrong Puzzle 068?
- Daily Puzzle 068 is Tile 07, from the Tile set.
- Puzzle 68 in another Layton game is a different puzzle. If yours isn't about seven shopkeepers choosing days off on a chart, you're in the wrong game.
Where you get it
Puzzle 068 comes in Chapter 5. Go to Madame Lapushka's, the costume boutique in Monte d'Or, and talk to Madame Lapushka. She greets the Professor with "Are you finally here to let me fix you up?" Layton answers, "Thank you, but no. I do appreciate your gracious, repeated offer, Madame Lapushka." She replies, "A shame. Don't think you can waltz out of here without solving a puzzle, though!" and the puzzle starts.

Madame Lapushka's puzzle is there from the start of Chapter 5, when your objective reads "Continue the Investigation!", until your objective becomes "Catch the Masked Gentleman!". That covers every objective in between, from "Head to City Hall!" and "Go to the Racetrack!" through "Go to Pumpkin Park!", "Investigate the Attractions!" and "Head to Topsy Tower!". The story doesn't need it: it doesn't give a reward. If you miss it, it goes to Nanna Grams (known as Elizabeth in the UK version) at the start of Chapter 7.
The boutique has three hint coins, all in the normal view.
- The drawer at the bottom left.
- The box on top of the shelf.
- The candle.
Each coin can be collected only once. These are the same three coins as on your Chapter 1 visit for Puzzle 010 and your Chapter 3 visit for Puzzle 047, so if you tapped them then, there's nothing left to pick up here. Hidden Puzzle 009 Stamp Stumper is in the same room.
Hints, one at a time
These are the game's own hints, word for word from the North American version and in the same order. Open only the next one you need. In the game, Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two.
Hint 1: The day only two can take
First, think about who can choose Saturday as their day off.
According to the chart, the only possibilities are Mr. A or Ms. C. For now, let's put Ms. C down for Saturday.
But wait! Ms. C's day off has to be the day before Mr. A's, which means Mr. A's day off would have to be Sunday. As a result, the only one who can choose Saturday is Mr. A.
Hint 2: The day before Mr. A's
The first hint established that Mr. A has to take Saturday off.
Ms. C wants her day off to be the one before Mr. A's. That means her day off will have to be Friday.
In a similar fashion, you should be able to start eliminating certain possibilities one by one for the remaining five shopkeepers.
Hint 3: Mr. B and Mr. G
Mr. A has to take Saturday as his day off, which means Ms. C must take Friday.
Mr. B wants to take either Tuesday or Friday. But since Friday is already taken, it has to be Tuesday. That means Mr. G has to take Sunday, since his only other option is Tuesday.
Can you rule out any other possibilities in this same way?
Super Hint: Finish the elimination
As of Hint 3, we know the following: Mr. A takes Saturday off, Mr. B takes Tuesday, Ms. C takes Friday, and Mr. G takes Sunday. The next one we can determine is Mr. D. He's happy with Monday, Friday, or Sunday, but of those, only Monday will work.
Next up, Dr. F picked Monday, Wednesday, or Friday. The only remaining choice is Wednesday. Now just finish off this process of elimination, and you're done!
Answer and full solution
The answer below covers every step, with pictures of the finished puzzle. Open it when you're ready.
Show the answer
The answer:
- Mr. A: Saturday
- Mr. B: Tuesday
- Ms. C: Friday
- Mr. D: Monday
- Ms. E: Thursday
- Dr. F: Wednesday
- Mr. G: Sunday
The game's answer text says: "Correct! They arranged their days off as follows: Mr. A on Saturday, Mr. B on Tuesday, Ms. C on Friday, Mr. D on Monday, Ms. E on Thursday, Dr. F on Wednesday, and Mr. G on Sunday. Once you realize that Mr. A's day off must be Saturday, the rest just slot into place one by one!"
Step by step:
- Find who can take Saturday. None of the five circled rows has Saturday circled, so only Mr. A or Ms. C can take it. If Ms. C took Saturday, Mr. A would have to close the day after, on Sunday, and he won't close on Sunday. So Mr. A takes Saturday.
- Place Ms. C. She closes the day before Mr. A, so she takes Friday.
- Place Mr. B and Mr. G. Mr. B circled Tuesday or Friday, and Friday is gone, so he takes Tuesday. Mr. G circled Tuesday or Sunday, and Tuesday is now gone, so he takes Sunday.
- Place Mr. D and Dr. F. Mr. D circled Monday, Friday or Sunday; only Monday is left, so he takes Monday. Dr. F circled Monday, Wednesday or Friday; only Wednesday is left, so Dr. F takes Wednesday.
- Place Ms. E. She circled Wednesday, Thursday or Sunday, and only Thursday is left.
- Mark the chart. Tap Sat in row A, Tue in row B, Fri in row C, Mon in row D, Thu in row E, Wed in row F and Sun in row G, so there's exactly one orange dot in each row, then touch Submit.

If your answer keeps failing:
- You put Ms. C on Saturday. That forces Mr. A onto Sunday, the one day he refuses. Saturday has to be Mr. A's.
- There's an extra dot. The game checks every cell. Tap any extra dot again to remove it, so each row has exactly one.
- Two shopkeepers share a day. Every shopkeeper needs a different day, so each column can hold only one dot.
Picarats, hints and hint coins
Days of Rest shows 30 picarats when it starts. The puzzle can award 30, 25 or 20 picarats. Wrong answers may reduce the picarat value. A wrong answer gets "Too bad. If your plans go awry, the shopkeepers won't be able to take the days off that they want!" If you leave the puzzle without solving it, Madame Lapushka says, "Oh my... I did not see you as a quitter." Talk to her again and she says, "Solving puzzles is a good way for the mind to relax." before the puzzle starts again.
Hints cost hint coins, not picarats. Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two, five in total. The boutique's three coins cover Hints 1 to 3 but not the Super Hint, and only if you didn't already collect them in Chapter 1 or Chapter 3. Or use the free hints on this page and save your coins.
What it unlocks
Nothing. Days of Rest doesn't open a minigame item or anything else. Solving it still adds its picarats to your total and counts toward the puzzles you've solved.
Versions
- Nintendo 3DS family: this page covers the 3DS game. You tap the cells on the touch screen chart with the stylus.
- US and UK English versions: the chart and the answer are the same in the US and UK English versions. The puzzle has the same name in both, and the UK text uses slightly different wording, as described under Puzzle names.
The scene around the puzzle
Once the puzzle is solved, Madame Lapushka says, "That intellectual air isn't just an act! If only the clothes were..." Layton changes the subject: "Leaving that aside for the moment, did you hear there was an arrest in the case of the Masked Gentleman?" She answers, "Oh, yes. Alphonse. That is quite a stinker of an arrest, if you ask me, darling." She goes on, "What evidence do they have against him? Let me guess--none? Or is it very little?" and "He's not very good with people, sure. A little rough around the edges, maybe." She adds, "But even his own businesses have been harmed. I just don't see it."
Layton says, "I think the police are wrong about Dalston." Madame Lapushka replies, "And that would mean that the real criminal is still out there!" Layton agrees: "Yes. While everyone is focused on Dalston, the real culprit is free to roam." She finishes with "It seems the police are overeager beavers to call this case closed, no?"
Talk to her again and she says, "I believe he's still out there, darling. And probably perfectly accessorized."
