Miracle Mask Puzzle 074: Bunny-Hop Swap 3 Hints and Answer

Stuck on Puzzle 074, Bunny-Hop Swap 3? It's a hidden rabbit puzzle at the Racetrack in Monte d'Or: jump the toy rabbits over each other until all eight are brown. Open the four hints one at a time and show the answer only when you want it. Solitaire, 40 picarats, Chapter 5.

Puzzle 074 is Bunny-Hop Swap 3, a 40-picarat Solitaire puzzle hidden at the Racetrack in Monte d'Or, in Chapter 5. Nobody hands it to you: you start it by tapping the pile of wooden crates at the bottom left of the Racetrack, where Luke spots a toy bunny. Eight white toy rabbits sit on a four-by-four board. A rabbit moves by jumping over other rabbits, and every rabbit it jumps over changes color. Your job is to turn all eight brown.

This page covers story Puzzle 074 in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, the 3DS game (US and UK English). The board and the answer are the same in the US and UK English versions; quotes use the North American text. If you're after Daily Puzzle 074, the first or second Bunny-Hop Swap, or Puzzle 74 from another Layton game, see Wrong Puzzle 074? below.

The puzzle opens with "Those odd rabbit toys keep hopping back!" and gives three rules: "1. The rabbits can only move by jumping horizontally, diagonally, or vertically over other rabbits." "2. They can jump over any number of rabbits at once." "3. A white rabbit will turn brown when jumped over, and vice versa." Then it asks, "Can you make all the rabbits here turn brown, following the rules given above?" The objective bar says "Turn all the rabbits brown!"

At the start, all eight rabbits are white. They sit on squares 1, 3, 4, 5, 12, 13, 14 and 16 on the grid below, and the other eight squares are empty. A jump always lands on the first empty square past the rabbits it goes over, and it must go over at least one rabbit. The rabbit that jumps keeps its own color. Only the rabbits it jumps over change.

This page numbers the squares 1 to 16, reading left to right along each row, starting at the top left. To move a rabbit, the game says to "Touch and hold a rabbit on the Touch Screen to highlight all the squares it can hop to," then slide it to a green square. A counter on the small sign on the top screen counts your jumps.

Wrong Puzzle 074?

  • Daily Puzzle 074 is Sweets 01, from the Sweet Truth set.
  • Puzzle 006, Bunny-Hop Swap, is the first puzzle in this set: twelve rabbits, hidden in Ledore Parlor in Chapter 1, 20 picarats. See Puzzle 006.
  • Puzzle 028, Bunny-Hop Swap 2, is the second, hidden in Layton's hotel room in Chapter 3 and worth 30 picarats. Its starting board is different, so its jumps won't work here. See Puzzle 028.
  • Puzzle 075, Grand Horse Race, is the next puzzle at the Racetrack. If yours is about a horse race, that's the one you've got.
  • Puzzle 74 in another Layton game is a different puzzle. If yours doesn't show eight toy rabbits on a four-by-four board, you're in the wrong game.

Where you find it

Later in Chapter 5, your objective becomes "Go to the Racetrack!" A short scene plays when you get there, and your objective then changes to "Speak to the Manager!" The puzzle is waiting in the Racetrack view itself: tap the pile of wooden crates at the bottom left, next to the bucket and the planks. Emmy says, "Ugh, look at this mess!" and Luke answers, "Oh! I think I see a toy bunny in there! I used to have one just like that!" Then the puzzle starts.

You don't have to solve it: it's a hidden puzzle, and the story doesn't need it. The crates keep offering the puzzle until you solve it, so you can come back for it later. You come back to the Racetrack in Chapter 7, for Puzzle 125, A Day at the Races.

The Racetrack in Monte d'Or: a cart warehouse with a wheel on its sign and its shutter rolled up over a row of colored carts, a wooden fence and gate in front of tall green trees, and a grandstand with purple roofs on the right; a gold ring labelled Crates, Puzzle 074 circles the wooden crates, planks, spade and bucket at the bottom left, and three numbered rings mark the sign above the shutter, a bush by the fence and the edge of the grandstand roof
Illustration of most of the Racetrack view. The gold ring marks the crates that start the puzzle, and the numbered rings mark the three hint coins. Characters aren't shown.

The Racetrack has three hint coins, all in the normal view, without zooming in. They're on the sign above the warehouse shutter, in the bush by the fence and on the edge of the grandstand roof. Each coin can be collected only once, and the coins belong to the place, so they're the same ones you'd find when you come here for Puzzle 075.

When the rabbits won't all turn brown

  • You keep jumping brown rabbits. A brown rabbit you jump over turns white again. Every jump over a brown rabbit means at least one extra jump later.
  • The rabbit you moved is still white. The jumping rabbit doesn't change color. Some other rabbit has to jump over it later.
  • A rabbit won't go where you want. It can only land on the first empty square straight past the rabbits it jumps over, in one of the eight directions. Hold the rabbit to see which squares turn green.
  • You've used a lot of jumps. That's fine. Keep going, or start the board over.
  • You can't find the puzzle. It's at the Racetrack, in Chapter 5: tap the wooden crates at the bottom left of the view.

Hints, one at a time

These are the game's own hints, word for word from the North American version and in the same order. Open only the next one you need. In the game, Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two.

Hint 1: how many moves

You can do this in only eight moves.

Think you're up to the challenge?

Hint 2: where to start

Start by moving the rabbits in each corner. It doesn't matter where you start.

Hint 3: checking your progress

Have you moved the rabbits in each corner?

You're doing well as long as you avoid turning any of the brown rabbits white.

Super Hint: the rest of the way

You should now have moved the white rabbits in each corner and had them jump over the rabbits next to them.

Next, use your new brown rabbits to jump over the remaining white rabbits one by one.

That should do it!

Answer and full solution

The answer below gives every jump, with a picture of the board before each jump and of the finished puzzle. Open it when you're ready.

Show the answer

Answer: eight jumps. First, each corner rabbit jumps over its white neighbor, which turns brown. Then each of those four new brown rabbits jumps over one of the white rabbits that just moved, and every rabbit is brown.

The eight jumps

1Square 1 to square 9DownSquare 5, which turns brown
2Square 4 to square 2LeftSquare 3, which turns brown
3Square 13 to square 15RightSquare 14, which turns brown
4Square 16 to square 8UpSquare 12, which turns brown
5Square 3 to square 1LeftSquare 2, which turns brown
6Square 5 to square 13DownSquare 9, which turns brown
7Square 14 to square 16RightSquare 15, which turns brown
8Square 12 to square 4UpSquare 8, which turns brown
Eight small touch screen boards in two rows, labelled Jump 1: 1 to 9, Jump 2: 4 to 2, Jump 3: 13 to 15, Jump 4: 16 to 8, Jump 5: 3 to 1, Jump 6: 5 to 13, Jump 7: 14 to 16 and Jump 8: 12 to 4; each shows the board just before that jump, with the jumping rabbit's square lit, its landing square in green, and a note of the square that flips
Illustration of the board before each of the eight jumps. The lit square is the rabbit that jumps, and the green square is where it lands.

Why it works. Jumps 1 to 4 can go in any order, as Hint 2 says. Each corner rabbit jumps over one white neighbor, so that neighbor turns brown while the corner rabbit stays white. After jump 4, the four brown rabbits are on squares 3, 5, 12 and 14, and the four white ones are on squares 2, 8, 9 and 15. In jumps 5 to 8, each brown rabbit jumps over one white rabbit next to it, and no jump ever goes over a brown rabbit. Eight is also the fewest number of jumps that solves it.

The finished board has brown rabbits on squares 1, 2, 4, 8, 9, 13, 15 and 16. The game confirms it: "Correct! The rabbits have all changed color wonderfully. And what an elegant solution!"

The finished puzzle: on the top screen, eight brown toy rabbits on the wooden board, with the jump counter reading 0008; on the touch screen, brown rabbits on squares 1, 2, 4, 8, 9, 13, 15 and 16
Illustration of all eight rabbits brown after eight jumps.

If it still doesn't work out:

  • A corner rabbit lands in the wrong place. Each corner jump goes over exactly one rabbit and lands two squares away. If a second rabbit is in the way, a different jump has already gone first; undo it or start the board over.
  • Jump 6 won't land on square 13. Square 13 has to be empty, so do jump 3 (13 to 15) first.
  • A brown rabbit turned white. Some jump went over a brown rabbit. Start the board over and follow the table in order.

Bunny-Hop Swap 1, 2 and 3

The three Bunny-Hop Swap puzzles
PuzzlePicaratsWhere it's hidden
006 Bunny-Hop Swap20Ledore Parlor
028 Bunny-Hop Swap 230Layton's Room, the hotel
074 Bunny-Hop Swap 340Racetrack

All three use the same rules and the same toy board, and all three are hidden puzzles. The starting rabbits are different each time, so each one has its own answer.

Picarats, hints and hint coins

Bunny-Hop Swap 3 shows 40 picarats when it starts. Its three picarat values are all 40. If you quit, Emmy says, "Perhaps now isn't the time." When you come back to try again, she says, "Show me the puzzle with the bunnies, Luke."

Hints cost hint coins, not picarats. Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two, five in total. The Racetrack's three coins cover Hints 1 to 3 but not the Super Hint, so you'll need coins saved from earlier for that one, or you can use the free hints on this page.

Does it unlock anything?

No. Solving it doesn't give you an item. You get the picarats, and the puzzle counts toward your total.

Versions

  • Nintendo 3DS family: this page covers the 3DS game. You slide the rabbits with the stylus on the touch screen, and the top screen shows the board and the jump counter.
  • US and UK English versions: the board, the rules and the answer are the same. The UK text differs only in small details of wording and spelling.

The scene around the puzzle

The puzzle starts from the mess of crates by the cart warehouse, where Luke spots a toy bunny like one he used to have. When it's solved, Emmy says, "You really have a knack for anything dealing with animals, Luke!" and Luke replies, "Well, they're my friends!"
