Miracle Mask Puzzle 092: Ancient Artistry Hints and Answer

Stuck on Puzzle 092, Ancient Artistry? Deep in the Akbadain ruins, a cave painting sits in the dark and your lamp lights only one small patch at a time. Can you count the bulls? Open the four hints one at a time and show the answer only when you want it. Write Answer, 30 picarats, Chapter 6.

Puzzle 092 is Ancient Artistry, a 30-picarat Write Answer puzzle on Ruins B3 in Chapter 6. Young Hershel and Randall dig it up from a glowing spot in the Akbadain ruins. Deep in a cave there's an old painting, but the cave is dark and your lamp lights only one round patch at a time. Your job is to count how many bulls the painting shows and write the number on the touch screen.

Video: Ancient Artistry solved. It shows the answer, so skip it if you only want the hints.

This page covers story Puzzle 092 in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, the 3DS game (US and UK English). The painting and the answer are the same in the US and UK English versions; quotes use the North American text. If you're after Daily Puzzle 092, the other cave painting puzzle in the ruins, or Puzzle 92 from another Layton game, see Wrong Puzzle 092? below.

The puzzle reads: "Deep inside this cave is what appears to be a cave painting from many thousands of years ago. The cave is dark, so it's difficult to make out the entire painting. Your lamp can only illuminate one part at a time, but can you count how many bulls are depicted here?" The objective bar says "How many bulls are there?"

The top screen is dark except for one round patch of light. The touch screen starts as a pad with a lamp on it: drag your stylus across the pad and the light moves over the painting, so you can sweep it from one side to the other. When you've counted, switch the touch screen to the answer boxes, write your number and touch Submit. You can switch back to the lamp as often as you like.

Wrong Puzzle 092?

  • Daily Puzzle 092 is Fountain 02, from the Pipework Patch-up set.
  • Puzzle 099, Ancient Artistry 2, is the other cave painting puzzle, dug up later on Ruins B7. It asks "How many deer are there?" instead of bulls.
  • Puzzle 091, Totem Tumbler, is the puzzle before this one, dug up on Ruins B2. If yours is about stacking totem blocks, that's the one you've got.
  • Puzzle 093, Hershel vs. Mummies!, is the next puzzle, on Ruins B4. If yours has mummy machines, that's the one you've got.
  • Puzzle 92 in another Layton game is a different puzzle. If yours doesn't show a dark cave painting lit by a lamp, you're in the wrong game.

Where you find it

Chapter 6 is the long flashback in the Akbadain ruins, where you play as young Hershel exploring with Randall. When you reach the third level, Randall says, "Third level. And no end in sight!" Ruins B3 starts in the room at the bottom left of the floor map. Head up the long corridor in the middle of the map. At its top end there are two glowing spots side by side, and Randall calls out, "Two glowing spots! Quick--dig here!" Before you can dig, a giant boulder comes rolling, and Hershel shouts, "Run! Run!"

Once you've escaped the boulder, go back to the two glowing spots. Face the left one and touch the Dig Hole icon, or press the A Button. Randall says, "Another puzzle!" and Hershel answers, "Hm... What do you think, Randall?" Then the puzzle starts. The right spot hides a hint coin.

The Ruins B3 map on old yellow parchment: brown rooms and corridors, a blue arrow at the room at the bottom left, a red arrow at the room at the top right, a pale round emblem in the room at the top, and a teal ring at the top end of the long corridor in the middle, with a label reading Puzzle 092
Illustration of the Ruins B3 map. The teal ring marks the top of the long corridor, where the puzzle is buried.

You don't have to solve it to move on. If you leave Puzzle 092 unsolved, it goes to Nanna Grams (known as Elizabeth in the UK version) at the start of Chapter 7.

When the count won't come out right

  • You keep losing your place. Start at one edge of the painting and sweep the lamp across in rows, the way Hint 1 suggests.
  • Some bulls are tiny. Move the lamp slowly. Some of the bulls are much smaller than others.
  • You've checked every corner and the game still says "Too bad." The game's wrong-answer message is "Too bad. Use your lamp to light up every corner of the painting." Hint 3 has the push you need.
  • You're not sure how to answer. Switch the touch screen to the answer boxes, write the number and touch Submit.
  • You can't find the puzzle. It's buried under the left of the two glowing spots at the top of the long corridor on Ruins B3, where the boulder comes rolling.

Hints, one at a time

These are the game's own hints, word for word from the North American version and in the same order. Open only the next one you need. In the game, Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two.

Hint 1: where to start

Start from the edge of the painting, move the lamp along, and count the bulls as you go. Some of them are fairly small, so look closely!

Hint 2: a count that's too low

Did you count all the bulls you could see but still got the answer wrong?

Those were definitely bulls, so you didn't count something that wasn't a bull. But maybe you missed one? Do another pass over the painting with your lamp.

Hint 3: the missing bull

You've probably found nine bulls in the painting. That's not all of them. However, you're not going to find any more by concentrating on just one spot. Perhaps you're missing the forest for the trees?

Super Hint: the whole painting

There are nine smaller bulls and one giant bull. You should see it if you cast your eyes over the entire painting.

Answer and full solution

The answer below gives the number, shows every bull in the painting, and shows the finished puzzle. Open it when you're ready.

Show the answer

Answer: 10. Write 1 in the left box and 0 in the right box, then touch Submit.

Sweep the lamp over the whole painting and you'll find nine small, dark green bulls: one on the left edge of the yellow area, three in a row across the upper middle, one lower down on the left, one on the bottom edge, two side by side on the right, and one on the right edge. That's nine, and it's the count most people stop at.

The tenth bull is the painting itself. The big yellow shape that all the small bulls sit on is one giant bull, with its head and horn sticking up at the top right. Through the lamp you only ever see a small part of it, so it looks like the background. Seen all at once, it's plainly a bull.

The whole cave painting, fully lit: a huge yellow bull shape outlined in gold, with a horn sticking up at the top right, covers most of the green rock wall; nine small dark green bulls on and around it are numbered 1 to 9, and a white badge with the number 10 sits on the giant bull near its horns
Illustration of the whole painting. The nine small bulls are numbered 1 to 9, and the giant bull, outlined in gold, is number 10.

The game confirms it: "Correct! There are nine small bulls and one large one."

The finished puzzle: on the top screen, the painting fully lit, with several small dark green bulls on the yellow rock; on the touch screen, two answer boxes on squared paper with 1 written in the left box and 0 in the right box
Illustration of the finished puzzle, with the answer written in the two boxes.

If it still doesn't work out:

  • You wrote 9. That's all the small bulls, but not the giant one they're painted on.
  • You got 8 or fewer. You've missed a small bull. The ones sitting on the edges of the big yellow shape are the easiest to miss.
  • You counted something else as a bull. Hint 2 says every bull you saw really was a bull, so don't drop any from your count.

Picarats, hints and hint coins

Ancient Artistry shows 30 picarats when it starts. The puzzle can award 30, 25 or 20 picarats. Wrong answers may reduce the picarat value. A wrong answer brings the message "Too bad. Use your lamp to light up every corner of the painting." When you come back to try again, Randall says, "This time I'm going to crack it!"

Hints cost hint coins, not picarats. Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two, five in total. Ruins B3 has four hint coins, each buried under a glowing spot, and one of them is in the spot right next to this puzzle. Those four coins cover Hints 1 to 3 with one coin left over, one short of the Super Hint, so you'll need a coin saved from earlier for that one, or you can use the free hints on this page.

Does it unlock anything?

No. It doesn't give you an item or move the story on. You get the picarats, and the puzzle counts toward your total.

Versions

  • Nintendo 3DS family: this page covers the 3DS game. The painting is on the top screen, and you move the lamp and write your answer on the touch screen.
  • US and UK English versions: the painting and the answer are the same. The UK text differs only in small details of wording.

The scene around the puzzle

If you quit the puzzle, Randall teases, "If you want to bury this one where you found it, I won't tell anyone."

When it's solved, Hershel says, "Clearly the Azran enjoyed puzzles." Randall answers, "Proof that solving a good puzzle is an ageless pastime!" and Hershel replies, "You are truly in your element, Randall!"
