Miracle Mask Puzzle 088: Glass Arrows Hints and Answer

Stuck on Puzzle 088, Glass Arrows? Under the roller coaster at Pumpkin Park, a stack of see-through panels with red arrows is missing one panel, and you pick which one from A to D. Open the game's four hints one at a time and show the answer only when you want it. Multiple Choice, 40 picarats, Chapter 5.

Puzzle 088 is Glass Arrows, a 40-picarat Multiple Choice puzzle at the Carousel in Pumpkin Park, in Chapter 5. You start it by tapping the bottom of the roller coaster. Four see-through panels, each with one red arrow pointing a different way, used to be stacked under the coaster. Someone has taken one of them. From how the three remaining arrows overlap, you work out which panel is missing and choose it from A to D.

This page covers story Puzzle 088 in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, the 3DS game (US and UK English). The panels and the answer are the same in the US and UK English versions; quotes use the North American text. If you're after Daily Puzzle 088, the other attraction puzzles in Pumpkin Park or Puzzle 88 from another Layton game, see Wrong Puzzle 088? below.

Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask Puzzle 088 Glass Arrows: on the top screen, a pale blue glass panel in a frame of yellow light bulbs, with roller-coaster track, balloons and leaves around it; on the panel, red arrows overlap into a diamond shape, with a deep red band just above the middle that reaches the left and right points, a deep red square below it, and lighter red triangles at the top, bottom, left and right; on the touch screen, a row of four glass panels under a line of bulbs, each with one pale red arrow pointing a different way, and the round buttons A, B, C and D below them

The puzzle reads: "Below the roller coaster lies a stack of see-through panels with red arrows. Originally there were four panels, but someone's gone and taken one. Given that each arrow points in a different direction, can you tell which panel is missing? Choose from A to D." The objective bar says "Which arrow is missing?"

The top screen shows the stack as it is now, with three panels on top of each other. The touch screen shows all four panels side by side, A to D from left to right, with a round button under each one. Every arrow has the same shape: a wide triangular head, a short shaft and a pointed tail. Tap the button under the panel you think is missing.

Wrong Puzzle 088?

  • Daily Puzzle 088 is Flight 02, from the Aerial View set.
  • Puzzle 087, Merry-Go-Tiles, is the other attraction puzzle at the Carousel, and it starts from the carousel itself. If yours is about tiles, that's the one you've got.
  • Puzzle 089, Pumpkin Spinners, is the attraction puzzle at the Pumpkin Spinners, the next area of the park.
  • Puzzle 090, Loose Connection, is the fourth attraction puzzle, at the Ferris wheel.
  • Puzzle 88 in another Layton game is a different puzzle. If yours doesn't show see-through panels with red arrows, you're in the wrong game.

Where you find it

In Chapter 5, your objective becomes "Go to Pumpkin Park!" and then "Investigate the Attractions!" Four of the park's rides hide a puzzle, and this one is at the Carousel: tap the bottom of the roller coaster, the brick station under the green dragon sign on the right of the view. Layton says, "I hope we would have noticed if something was amiss on the roller coaster when we rode it earlier." After some teasing between Emmy and Luke about riding it again, Emmy remembers, "Over there! It was the design at the bottom of the roller coaster!" Layton says, "Let's take a closer look," and the puzzle starts.

You have to solve it: it's one of the four attraction puzzles the story needs before your objective moves on to "Head to Topsy Tower!" The roller coaster keeps offering the puzzle until you solve it.

The Carousel in Pumpkin Park at night: a lit-up carousel with a red and teal canopy, white horses and riders on the left, a small brick kiosk at the far left, roller-coaster track looping across the sky behind, and on the right a brick station with a striped awning and a green dragon sign, next to a leafy tree and a white table and chairs; a gold ring labelled Roller coaster, Puzzle 088 circles the bottom of the brick station, and four numbered coin markers sit on the kiosk roof, on top of the lamp post by the station, on the flame of the dragon sign and on the crown of the carousel
Illustration of the Carousel view. The gold ring marks where to tap to start the puzzle, and the numbered markers show the four hint coins.

The Carousel has four hint coins, all in the normal view: on the roof of the small brick kiosk at the far left, on top of the lamp post by the roller coaster station, in the dragon's flame on the station sign and on the crown at the top of the carousel. They're the same coins you can find while doing Puzzle 087 here, and each coin can be collected only once.

When the arrows won't add up

  • You're trying to match the outline. The outside shape of the stack doesn't tell you much on its own. Look at where the red is darkest instead.
  • You're treating the panels like paper. They're see-through, so every arrow counts, even the ones underneath. Where two arrows overlap, the red gets darker; where three overlap, darker still.
  • The shapes blur together in your head. Draw the four arrows in the Memo Function, each in a different color, and try stacking three at a time.
  • You forgot the tails. Each arrow has a pointed tail at the opposite end from its head. The tails help fill in the shape too.
  • You can't find the puzzle. It's at the Carousel in Pumpkin Park, in Chapter 5 while your objective is "Investigate the Attractions!": tap the bottom of the roller coaster on the right of the view.

Hints, one at a time

These are the game's own hints, word for word from the North American version and in the same order. Open only the next one you need. In the game, Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two.

Hint 1: draw it out

It might be a bit tricky to work this out in your head, so try drawing it using the Memo Function.

If you draw each arrow a different color, it should be easier to work out.

Hint 2: the darker area

The panels may be transparent, but each time they overlap, it becomes harder for light to pass through them.

One area of the arrows is noticeably darker than the rest. What can you conclude from this?

Hint 3: the first panel in the stack

The dark-red area can only be created if there are three overlapping arrows, so the panel with the arrow pointing upward must be one of the three on the stack.

Try to picture what shape would be left if you removed the up arrow.

Super Hint: the second panel in the stack

In addition to the panel with an up arrow, the panel with an arrow pointing right is also lying on the stack.

See if you can work out the final panel to rule out.

Answer and full solution

The answer below names the missing panel, explains how the three arrows in the stack produce its light and dark areas, and shows the finished puzzle. Open it when you're ready.

Show the answer

Answer: C, the panel with the arrow pointing down. The stack is made of the up arrow (A), the right arrow (B) and the left arrow (D).

Each arrow's head is a wide triangle that covers half of the panel: the up arrow's head covers the upper half, the right arrow's head the right half, the left arrow's head the left half, and the down arrow's head the lower half. The shafts and tails all cross in the middle.

In the stack, the deepest red is a wide band just above the middle, reaching all the way to the left and right points, with a square below it. Three layers overlap there. The square is where the shafts and tails cross. The band is where the up arrow's head lies under both side arrowheads, so the up, right and left arrows must all be in the stack. The four lighter triangles at the top, bottom, left and right are two layers deep.

On the left, the stack of red arrows from the top screen with numbered markers: a 3 on the deep red band just above the middle and the square below it, and a 2 on each of the four lighter triangles at the top, bottom, left and right; on the right, the four panels from the touch screen labelled A to D, with panel C, the down arrow, darkened and crossed out
Illustration of how many arrows overlap in each part of the stack, and the panel that isn't in it.

Why it works. Try the other possible stacks. With the down arrow in place of the left arrow, the deep red would sit in triangles above and below the right point instead of in a band, and the left point of the diamond would be only one layer deep. With the down arrow in place of the right arrow, the same thing happens on the left side. With the down arrow in place of the up arrow, the deep red band would run below the middle instead of above it. Only up, right and left together match the stack, so the down arrow is the one that's gone.

The game confirms it: "Correct! The arrow facing downward is missing. Because the panels are transparent, the arrows get darker as more are placed on top of each other."

The finished puzzle: on the top screen, the glass panel in its frame of yellow bulbs now shows a single deep red arrow pointing down, while a green dragon-shaped roller-coaster car full of smiling riders passes on the left; on the touch screen, panel C with its down arrow and the C button below it are circled in gold
Illustration of the finished puzzle, with panel C chosen.

If it still doesn't work out:

  • You chose A. The up arrow has to be in the stack: without its head, the deep red band would be below the middle, not above it.
  • You chose B or D. The stack is the same on its left and right sides, so the right and left arrows are either both in it or both missing. Only one panel is missing, so both are in it.

Picarats, hints and hint coins

Glass Arrows shows 40 picarats when it starts. The puzzle can award 40, 36 or 32 picarats. Wrong answers may reduce the picarat value. If you quit, Layton says, "What is he trying to indicate?" When you come back to try again, he says, "What could the Masked Gentleman be trying to tell us?" A wrong answer brings the message "Too bad. What does it look like when you place transparent pictures on top of each other?"

Hints cost hint coins, not picarats. Hints 1 to 3 cost one hint coin each and the Super Hint costs two, five in total. The Carousel's four coins cover Hints 1 to 3 with one coin left over, so you'll need a coin saved from earlier for the Super Hint, or you can use the free hints on this page.

Does it unlock anything?

Solving it doesn't give you an item. You get the picarats, and the puzzle counts toward your total.

Versions

  • Nintendo 3DS family: this page covers the 3DS game. You choose a panel by tapping its button on the touch screen, and the top screen shows the stack.
  • US and UK English versions: the panels and the answer are the same. The UK text differs only in small details of wording and spelling.

The scene around the puzzle

The puzzle starts after Emmy points out "the design at the bottom of the roller coaster." When it's solved, Emmy asks, "So what does this mean?" and Layton suggests, "Let's see if there is anything in the direction that the arrow is pointing. Perhaps under the roller-coaster track?" Emmy says, "I'll be right back!" While she's gone, Luke says, "Gosh, Professor, the Masked Gentleman certainly is devious. Imagine stealing part of a ride to send a message!" and Layton replies, "Yes. Devious and clever. We'll need to think as he does."

Emmy comes back with "Well, well, well! Look what I found!" and Layton notes, "Hm...marked with the Mask of Chaos. But what could it possibly mean?" Once all four attraction puzzles are solved, Luke says, "Professor, we have four of these cards now. Let's take a closer look at them." Layton replies, "Yes... Together they form a map that points to that tower on top of the hill."
